Time will tell if Jarmo made the right non-move. If we don't add to our top 2, is that the difference between us being a playoff team or not? I think as long as we are healthy, we are definitely a playoff team.

So really, the trade deadline is the likely time for us unless a long term option is available. Dougie Hamiltons don't get traded everyday and I suspect we made a better offer than what was taken -- what can you do about that?

It won't be until the first round of UFAs and the big RFAs are signed that most GMs will have an urgency to make moves. Our best bet for a quality blueliner is if good teams, in bad cap situations sign big money deals in the next month.

I would qualify this by saying it's so long as we're reasonably healthy - i.e. we only have to deal with the usual injuries that most teams suffer. If we're lucky with injuries? We could take the East, IMO.

No, really.

...but that would require being particularly fortunate, so I don't see it as being likely. :)

He talked about how he wants to build the team through drafting and development. He doesn't think it is best to build through FA. If there is a guy that can help them, at the right price, then great, but he won't force anything (same with trades).

Our forwards are highly thought of by other teams in the league.

He tried to move up to get another pick in the top 10. It was right after they asked him about talking to Doug Wilson and they had the 9th pick.

He said the team has identified guys on free agency and via trade that they think can help the team - that it's just a matter of whether they can be acquired/signed for what the team is willing to give.

Werenski is absolutely ripped for a 17 year old . Would have to think he ends up 225 lbs easy

How do the Sherwood brothers look?

Didn't look out of place at all. Kiefer Sherwood stood out more to me. Both has similar stature. Seemed to have decent shots. Could really tell that they both rely on their speed.

My 2 cents on today's session...
- First off, I don't think you can read too much into these camps, especially after just 1 day. So take this with a grain of salt.
- General comment to start - good grief...we have some big dudes in camp this year!
- re: Bjorkstrand. I actually thought he looked good in the time that I watched him. Quick shot and he found the back of the net more than anyone else that I watched today.
- re: Sherwood brothers. I was only able to see the younger brother today and I didn't think he looked out of place at all.
- re: Dansk. I didn't think that Dansk looked very good. I even thought he looked injured at times. Conversely, I thought Korpisalo looked great.
- I was curious about the late round pick Vainio and watched him quite a bit. I had read that he was a really good skater and from what I saw, I totally agree. Random thought: I wonder if he could play forward?
- LeBlanc & Pelletier were much better skaters than I remembered. Maybe I didn't follow them that closely last year...?
- I couldn't stay for the entire 2nd session, but Milano was Milano - still shooting the backhand. And from what little I saw of Werenski, he looked good as well.
- Ryan Collins is a large human being!

For me, it's hard to take too much from day 1. I hope to be able to catch some more tomorrow.

I'll assume I'm one of the ones that wouldn't like hearing his comments.

Look, I'm not against that draft and develop strategy, it's fine and necessary. Jarmo is very good at this part of his job. Well documented. I also agree that Free Agency is really not the best option for this club.

Where I had problems this weekend was that quality players were perceived as available on the market and outwardly, Jarmo didn't seem that he had irons in the fire. Now, seeing some of the prices (ex. Hamilton), I'm glad he didn't pull the trigger. I'm sure he's laid ground work for potential deals and I hope this is the case. I'm excited to see what transpires over the next week or so. I hope that Jarmo isn't overly patient, but saavy in making his moves and makes the big club better.

This team is close and I think Jarmo owes it to them to pick up the final pieces to really make these guys a contender.

Fair enough. The problem is I don't think there is a savy move to make. Too many teams want too much for the few available guys. That is why I don't want us to make a move, unless it can be done with guys like Anisimov, Cam, and Rychel. There just aren't smart moves to be made, IMO, unless another team is looking to make a hockey trade. That is, looking to improve their team at one position while we look to improve our team at another position (2 teams trading from their strength).

Actually, I think the exact opposite, unless he gets taller. He doesn't have much room to fill out. Not saying he can't get that big, but it won't be as easy for him to add weight as it would for someone really skinny.

He's 6'2". JJ is 6'1" 235. Kid has TONS of room to grow.

You're right. He won't add weight nearly as quickly as someone who is his height but 180 pounds. I still think Werenski can top out at around 230 pounds somewhere down the line, it'll just take him several years.

One of the first things you notice about Milano is that he’s bulked up considerably. He said he’s added somewhere in the neighborhood of 15-18 pounds since last season, and it’s obvious. Milano has spent the summer living and training in Columbus, getting to know the city and tackling some intense workouts.

From the CBJ article today about camp. I think that's huge for his development. Adding some weight did wonders for Johansen, hopefully it does for Milano and Bjorkstrand as well.

On a side note, I love that the winterhawks are becoming our farm team Johansen, Bjorkstrand and now Bittner

Dubinsky played there too!

Milano adding 15-18 pounds doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility. His injury at the start of last season wouldn't have prohibited him from working out so I'm sure he was hitting the gym hard then. He's also been in offseason mode for a couple months now and could have very easily added ~8-10 pounds since then with the right diet and routine.

What does that put him at now? 190 pounds? 195?

Yeah, that is what I meant. I mean, I weighed 230 at one point and I am only 6'0. Now, I wasn't in anywhere near the shape these guys are in, but I was in decent shape. He can weight that, but it will take a while and it may not be best for him to weight that. We will see how he develops.

does anyone have the heights/weights from this camp? I assume they did weigh ins and all that at the start. I am curious to hear about everyone. Also curious to see what Kolesar is weighing in now. Last year at Seattle training camp he weighed in at 210 I believe it was as a 17 year old. He is built like an ox already. Looks like a ripped football player on ice.

As long as Sonny keeps his speed and agility with his muscle it could make him a real dangerous player.
