I think this Scuds is going to retire thing is pure fantasy. He's not going to walk away from over $3 million because some Kings fans are concerned about the salary cap.

Given how he's played so far, everyone should be thrilled we have him. The guy has two assists and is a +4 after 5 games where we only went 3-2.

I don't think Scuds will retire. He's not a guy who has raked in money all his career. BUT, even if he doesn't, he can be buried in the minors for cheap--the real question is if he comes back will Sutter actually bury him and I don't think so.

Guys I think are gone after this year:

Vinny
McBain
Versteeg
Lewis
Schenn, contingent on Greene
Enroth

JSchultz
Roach
Bartosak

Guys I think will be on our roster:

Forbort
Gravel
Mersch
Shore
Dowd

Don't know how the salary will work, but I imagine something like this going into the year

Lucic-Kopitar-Brown
Pearson-Carter-Toffoli
Mersch-Shore-Brown
King-Dowd-Nolan
Andreoff, Clifford. If looch is gone, move mersch up, and pencil in Kempe/cheap UFA tryout, though it'll likely just be move everyone up.

Doughty-Scuderi
Muzzin-Martinez
Greene/Schenn-McNabb
Forbort, Gravel (Scuderi's heir apparent?)

Quick
Budaj

This is all barring training camp surprises, like if for example Cernak comes in and just wrecks shop.

I also still think DL is going hard after a 2nd-pairing RHD.

Where's Gaborik? And you have Brown twice?

I think Lucic will be gone and Schenn will be back. I don't see Greene coming back. Vinny is already gone. Lewis won't be back (someone over pays for him). Scuderi is the toss up. He could return or retire. Lot of miles on the body.

Mersch-Kopitar-Gaborik
Pearson-Carter-Toffoli
King-Shore-Brown
Clifford-Dowd-Nolan

Andreoff (most likely starts over Dowd, but will lose spot sooner than later)

McNabb-Doughty
Muzzin-Martinez
Forbort-Schenn
Gravel, Scuderi

Quick
Enroth

I'm not trying to imply that it's about the Kings. I'm saying Scuds will retire because he's now a journeyman. His family is far away and I don't think he's all that into being moved from team to team.

He gets burned and gives up great opportunities against. Did fine against a terrible/injured Van team. Before that he's been burned standing up at the blue line at the end of the game 2 times. Whether or not the puck ended up in the net this is unacceptable. (Ducks/MTL) Also against the Ducks in the first couple minuets of the game Scuderi iced the puck then got burned by Perry after the face off and gave Perry a great opportunity early. He is a liability in the defensive end.

I think Lombardi's going to make some moves this Summer. He's been handcuffed up until this point (Voynov situation didn't settle out until after free agency).

Brown needs to move. He drags the offense down of what ever line he's on. Best case, Brown is on the 3rd line. That still isn't ideal as it would be nice to have the 3rd line occasionally chip in a goal. His production can be replaced by numerous other guys on the team. Lewis , King, Kempe, Mersch. Yes I think Kempe/Mersch could put up 8 goals if playing with Kopitar for a good part of the season, maybe even Lewis. This doesn't even take into account cap space freed up from moving Brown or buying him out. His play has made him expendable. The biggest thing keeping Brown on the team at this point may be the inability to trade him.

Oh yeah... forgot about this.... Lombardi, maybe during the conference call, was talking about Scuderi's family coming out to LA with him. This would only be part of the consideration of Scuderi coming back if Lombardi planned on him coming back next year as well. It wouldn't make sense if Scuderi was just going to play until April. :naughty:

Also both Hawks/Kings retained on the Ehrhoff/Scuderi trade. This is because Scuderi has an extra year. Kings weren't taking him at full cap hit next year, then to even it out this year they retained on Ehrhoff. Going through all this trouble doesn't make sense if he's going to retire anyways. Lombardi is looking at next year as well.

Would you forego $3 million just because you couldn't be with your family full-time for 1 year?

If I'd already made 30 million in my career, probably. Especially if my body was starting to wear down. Not saying Rob will, everyone is different. He does have 3 kids though, all under 10 IIRC. I would imagine he will decide in the offseason if he wants to put everything he has into it one more time.

People without a large net worth (I'm way in that boat) are funny when they think $3MM isn't a big deal because someone grossed a shade under $30MM over the last 10 years...probably even less than that since Scuderi had some AHL time in 2005-06 and then the last lockout when he was making $3.4MM a season. This is all pre-tax too.

His actual salary is $2.5MM next season. That's real cheddar that most players will have no problem riding the bus for: especially being on an AHL team that plays less games than the rest of the league and plays nearly the entirety of its games in California.

Vinny can go make $4.5MM modeling haha. Guy is a superstar who has made a ton of money but, even then, he's only foregoing the last year of the contract so he could go to a contender and get to play out his career on the ice and not in the press box. Scuderi is not a former #1 overall pick and face of a franchise. It's not even close to the same thing.

Scuderi was traded away from his family and then sent to the AHL. He didn't quit then so I doubt it happens at all.

Besides, it's better that he doesn't and we bury him so Chicago and Pittsburgh have $1MM+ hits to their cap.

Certain people on this board think he'll just walk away from it to do the Kings a solid. Ain't happening and anyone thinking that lives in fantasy land.

I don't think Scuds is going to retire. The money is a nice chunk of change and not everyone has a good chance at a third or maybe even a fourth cup.

This is what I was saying. I don't know why some people thinks it's so farfetched. Personally, I couldn't care less whether he retires or not, but there are more important things in life than money.

If Scuds continues to play well, then yeah, I can see him playing out his contract. But if his skills seriously decline next season, I can see him hanging it up during the season. Bottom line is I'm really happy for Scuds. He's close to retirement, and he gets to re-join a class organization in his final year(s). I'm sure he's in good hands with Lombardi.

Obviously we all see that Rob isn't as good as he was in 2012, but at a $1MM cap hit, I don't think we're going to do much better for a #6 d-man that fits the system and can play 15 mins.

Let's be real -- Mcbain/Errorhoff/rookie weren't getting the job done as the #6.

Yeah... If that's all I thought Sutter was going to play him as I wouldn't have a problem with the acquisition.

Looking like it might be an interesting Summer coming up. Just looking at the cap.
Does Lucic resign?
Can Brown be jettisoned?
If Brown can't be moved what does the D look like? (Not a lot of cap left)
VL retire?
Does Lombardi bring in a 3C?
Greene retire? He's skating again so maybe not?
Schenn does he come back? Does Greene coming back or not effect that?
If both Greene/Schenn come back what does the rest of the D look like?

Plenty of moving parts. It's going to be entertaining.

Edit: Does Lombardi make a splash at the draft?

I wouldn't get your hopes up for any big splash

He was looking to trade up at last years draft, but wasn't able to get the player he was targeting.

It's a long shot. Things have to line up. Player Lombardi is targeting in a range where a team is willing to move a pick, but I wouldn't put it past Lombardi. A cheap ELC center that could play 3C and as they develop and be a piece for the future would work really nicely for the cap. Does that player exist in this draft and can Lombardi snag him.

it wouldn't surprise me but I am not expecting it. i would not be surprised if Brown is still on the team in the fall.

Plugging in the numbers for the cap, it's very difficult to address the 3C and have any depth on defense with Brown on the team. If the team is going to be competitive Brown has to be moved or remember how to play like a top 6 forward.
