My wife and I just got back from the game. It was a pretty one-sided affair, both on the ice and on the scoreboard. There was a few times in the second period that Bakersfield controlled play and created a few quality chances, but overall they kind of reminded me of their parent club.
Now I'm no scout, but these are just a few of my observations: Nurse and Draisaitl were pretty invisible out there. They didn't really do a whole lot. Their goalie was a rebound factory, had very poor rebound control.
As for the Reign: The players that stood out to me the most were Auger, Gravel, and Mersch.
Auger was big, and to me he seemed to use his size pretty good. He was in the corners and behind the net fighting for pucks, and he even took the puck to the front of the net a few times and had a scoring chance or two. Overall I liked what I saw from #39.
Kevin Gravel was the most noticeable D-Man out there. He was pretty good in the offensive zone, did a very good job of getting shots through to the net. He was pretty good defensively too. He looked like he very well could still be the player that many people here thought he could be.
Mersch impressed me the most. He was always around the net, used his size well, and skated well. At one point he broke up a nice pass in front of the Bakersfield goalie as the Condors were trying to leave the zone, and then made a nice pass to Newbury on the opposite side of the net for a goal. He also created problems for the Condors defense and goalie throughout the game right in front of the net.
Nic Dowd looked very solid in all areas, he made some good passes, went to the front of the net. He didn't look spectacular in any one area, but just really solid in every area. This guy could definitely be a 3rd-4th line center in the NHL someday.
Zykov looked as good as someone could for playing in his first pro game. He hustled, was not afraid to use his body, and did not shy away from the corners or from puck battles. I could see some of his skill showing through, made some nice moves, got some shots on net, and was involved in a few scoring chances. He did have one shot that, from where I was sitting, looked like it went in the net. They eventually ruled it no-goal after going to review, but it REALLY looked like it went past the line. It was nice back-hander from the side of the net.
Budaj looked very solid in goal, tracked the puck well, square to the shooters, and did not give up very many rebounds.
The Monarchs/Reign don't seem to have missed a step from last years finals.
Again, that's just my take, and I am far from being a good judge of talent, but that's just what I could tell.
