Gotta say, I miss having CNS covering Monarchs games. But at least we have Spike Coffman covering tonight's opening Ontario Reign preseason game against the San Diego Gulls.

I may 'cover' them by default if I'm there every night, but trying to shake some things out first. Sure won't be the same access as CNS et. al. but can at least update on some prospects if it works!

I will be at every game (with the exception of a couple this month) and I actually like the fact that we will have many varied voices covering the team and not just one for the most part.

Glad to hear that, Brad and 4. That's great.

The Reign lost in a shootout. Final score, 3-2. The Mayor reports that Bartosak had surgery yesterday and may be out for 3-4 weeks. Houser was our goalie last night.

I went to the game last night. My only comment, other than it was a great game, is that the 3 on 3 was incredibly exciting!!! And no one even scored!!

How did Zykov and Kempe look?

To me they both played well. We're together on same line. Zykov scored a nice goal short side with a good shot and quick release. The 3 on 3 was like The Adrian Kempe Show. They played almost all the guys trying to make Ontario. Dowd, Gravel, Berube, Bartosak, Auger did not play. The new goalie, Houser, played phenomenal and made several great saves.

Noticed that Alex Roach scored a goal. How did he look? Ready for the AHL?

Too funny. Gulls scored and got interrupted in the middle of their goal announcement when Nic Dowd scored unassisted.

Gulls get another goal. 2-1 birdies.

I went for the first couple periods until the kid started getting cranky.

One think I noticed is that Zykov plays more defense than Ebert. The guy is the first forward back in the zone when he's out there most of the time. He's actually too responsible in my opinion, I noticed it right away because it looks odd for a winger to drop back towards the middle.

Ebert was behind the opposition net a few times, dude is aggressive. He didn't get caught up ice, though.

Oh, and Houser let in a stinker. Not much he could do about the other ones though.

Not sure exactly what you mean about this but good teams and smart players don't play really center, left wing, right wing. They'll play F1, F2, F3. Even then the forwards will swap responsibilities with the defensemen down low as well. If he's with a smart adjusting center that can make for a very formidable defensive line.

He was F3 a few times, but others he was back when threats were minimal. Like one play a single gull was coming down the off wing and he dropped waaay back.

It looked strange because he was sometimes so deep that when the defensemen retrieved the puck they had to pause as he got into a spot for an outlet pass. A couple times he was behind the defense without a player to cover.

I'm sure he's erring on the side of caution out there, especially with the requirement of forward responsibility in the Kings' system, but it completely negated any offensive threat from him. He's young still, and I'm sure he'll find a happy medium.

Perhaps I was just expecting more aggression and carrying the play from him, usually young players make the mistake of pushing too far forward. To be honest, I found it hard to get a read on him.
