I'm not in any way endorsing the previous play but you have to be able to see a difference between a course-of-play check and a premeditated Bertuzzi suckerpunch from behind.

Thought the hit on Bailey was clean...just a guy with his head down at full speed getting run over by a much larger man. Somehow in today's game, you aren't supposed to take advantage of a guy with his head down at the blueline and hit them "too hard".

I'd be saying that if it didn't involve a Kings prospect.

The sucker-punch wasn't premeditated though like Bertuzzi but rather an immediate reaction to the hit that occured before the punch. Similar to Matt Johnson on Marchment back in the '98-99 pre-season after he kneed Duchesne if you can find the clip.

MJ then did the same thing to Beukeboom in the regular season shortly thereafter, but that was premeditated due to Beukeboom injuring Ferraro the year before and then slewfooting Glen Murray and not answering the bell when challenged.

I agree--I'm just not trying to discount it since I'm criticizing the sucker-punch in the other hand and I respect Hans' opinion (and IIRC he was actually there so I'm deferring to him on it).

I don't mean it was premeditated like Bertuzzi's or MJ's which had weeks/months of simmering, only that it was clear he decided he was going to engage MacDermid no matter what. We're seeing a lot more of that in the game lately and it's starting to bother me, at least try to get the guy's attention first

3 goals in the last 3 minutes? Nice. That last turnover, though, feel bad for the guy.

I like how the announcer says "What a terrible turnover" right before Dowd scores - he knew what was going to happen. Also like the puck getting stuck in the net...

Tightly contested game tonight, I drove up to see it in person. Both regulation goals were opportunistic, Montour scoring for the Gulls shortly after an icing-induced face off in the Reign end in the first, Kempe tying it up in the third off a horrid defensive miscue by the Gulls, who sent the puck right up the slot to an unmarked Kempe. OT was an interesting hurry up and wait affair, like two heavyweights circling each other waiting for the other's guard to drop momentarily, then a short flurry of activity, then repeat in the other end, until Sgarbossa's game winner.

I was sure Horvath was going to go with SOB in the third, the way SOB was shouting at him on a face off, but it never emerged.

The Reign outshot the Gulls 11-4 in the third, and 36-18 for regulation, though I didn't feel the possession time was that tilted in the first two periods,

I very much hope these teams tangle in the second round of the post season.

I forgot to mention, Budaj was textbook in shutting down a penalty shot opportunity from Kase in the first last night. He's certainly impressive at the AHl level!

Was at the game tonight a few rows behind the goal where the Reign shot twice. Solid game all around. Barracuda had a few chances, but nothing really dangerous. The only goal they got was a complete fluke. McCarthy was just throwing it to the front of the net and it happened to bank of a defenseman and went five hole on Budaj.

Sutter got his first goal for the Reign. What's funny is that he's wearing #7 for the Reign now that Zykov is gone, but the score sheet still listed Zykov as a member of the Reign so the goal was given credit to Zykov for his 5th goal.

The Mersch-Dowd-Bachman line was great throughout the night. And Auger had a beauty of a shorthanded goal which was right in front of me. Great game all around. Will be going to their game on Wednesday as well.

Gotta love the AHL score keepers

Tough love for Adrian Kempe from Coach Stothers:

ORI: Great finish by Kempe. Do you feel like he’s turning the corner?

Stothers: Kempe was directly responsible for their first goal, and our second goal. We had a similar situation vs San Diego and it cost us a point. Just because someone scores a goal I would hardly call it turning a corner? There is still a ton of work ahead for this talented individual before he becomes a complete player. This league is about development so he will get second, and third, chances here, but that will never happen in the NHL. His careless play in the DZ needs to improve, and it will, because sooner or later he will realize I am way more stubborn than he is. A young man, with an abundance of talent, well worth the time and energy.

Stothers is my kind of coach. He also praises the leaders of the team, like LoVerde.

The Reign brought it last night with a come-from-behind win and the stars of the game were players other than Mersch, Dowd or Backman.
