There's a reason why they play 76 games in a season. Give him time. I'm not saying he is going to be a point per game player, but it's way too early to judge him right now. That's like saying the Kings aren't going to make the playoffs after 3 games.

Reign play 68 games ;)

But it's true. For people that watched the games they realize how dominant Mersch has been out there on the ice. Even if the offensive numbers aren't eye popping just yet he is just great out there. All over the ice, making plays at both ends, just clearly ahead of everyone else.

indeed, which is why i said this in my first post:

"i am hopeful we'll see mersch move up the ranks in terms of points production. "

i haven't been able to watch; have only listened to one game, admittedly.

Whoops my mistake. Thanks for the correction.

That's fine and all, but it doesn't seem fair to question his point totals this early in the season.

comparing not questioning.
because i'd been reading so much about him, i went to AHL site to look at the leaderboard. i was just surprised he wasnt in the top 20.

What exactly are you expecting out of a 4th round pick ?

Mersch is not as skilled as Toffoli. It's damn good, Mersch potted 20+ goals in his first AHL season(That's hard to do), rather impressive for a guy that is not overlay skilled.

many people are saying he should be playing in the nhl already
there is a lot of excitement about him, and probably rightfully so.
i guess i am expecting him to rise to the top of the leaderboard in the next month or so.
mersch isnt overly skilled, however he has a super sense of how to finish at net and take advantage of opportunities, and score!
not to mention annoying the other team's goalie...

Don't have to be near the tops of the AHL in scoring to be NHL ready. In fact many players near the top of the AHL scoring are not NHL prospects but rather smaller vets that thrive at AHL level but can't make NHL. Doesn't make them better prospects since they have a few more point at AHL level than younger, bigger, different types of players. I'm just saying points production is important but not really the end all like you are making it out to be.

for sure.
although that's been kinda mersch's thing.
esp during the playoffs last year...
be the finisher at the net.
his screen is great too... just being there around the net.
and corsi stats hv been >>> for mersch

Mersch's power moves around the net are something I haven't seen anyone try in a long, long time. He's gutsy, fearless. He's King with a nose for the net.

The Reign have only played 3 games. Mersch has 2 goals and 1 assit in those 3 games. Keep in my that the Reign will play 8 less games then most of the league. I don't expect anyone on the team to be top of league points wise.

Can't make it out to this weekend's opening games like I would have liked. I hope someone here is able to go and give a recap. (Yours was appreciated, Holden.)

Sheng, I like your fancy stats pieces. I'm an analytics fan so I'll read that every time.

Also, if you haven't already, check out the Honorable Mentions of the prospect rankings over at MayorsManor.com

Attended the game tonight and it was a fun experience. First off, it was banner raising night. So the Calder Cup was on the ice and there was a nice little ceremony. Kingston was brought out as the mascot, so that was cool. Attendance was good as well. It's a nice arena. I only live 10 minutes away, but I had never attended an event there before. Don't expect Staples level of crowd control, though. The first 10 minutes or so of the 1st period was a gong show of people standing and trying to find their seats when the puck was in play. It got better after that, but oy.

Anyway, on to the game. In typical Kings organization banner raising games, the team played like dog crap for a good portion of it. A couple of bad turnovers early (one by Kempe) and failure to clear the puck and the Baby Oilers spotted Scrivens a 3 goal lead. Yep, Ben Scrivens was in net for Bakersfield. The Reign started to play a little better in the 2nd period, but still couldn't get anything really going offensively. Then with 6 minutes to go or so in the 2nd period, the top line woke up. Mersch, Dowd and Zykov started dominating. Mersch is absolutely going to be an NHL'er and probably soon. He's so hard to handle with his size and puck protection. It makes him incredibly dangerous around the goal mouth. He banged in the first Reign goal. Then less than a minute later, Newbury, who I think is the 2nd line center, banged in another on the doorstep to make it 2-3 Bakersfield. Then about a minute later, Dowd fed Zykov on the doorstep on a 2 on 1 to make it 3-3 before Bakersfield even knew what happened. A couple of minutes later, Gravel blasted one past Scrivens from the blueline on the powerplay to make it 4-3 Reign. At that point, the Reign were in control. The Mersch/Dowd/Zykov line finished the scoring in the 3rd period off a nice fore check and then completely knocking someone off the puck and then feeding a wide open Zykov in the circle and he beat Scrivens again.

I'm no scout, but my takeaways from the game are Mersch is really good. He's not terribly creative, but he's so difficult to stop because of his size, reach and positioning. Zykov has nice hands but he also found open ice to get his shots off and had a couple of other decent scoring chances besides his 2 goals. Kempe had an uneven game. The kid skates well, but he was moved off of the line he started with, Newbury at center, to a line centered by Brodzinski later in the game. He didn't really seem to have chemistry with either line and maybe he was guilty of trying to do a little too much at times because of that. On defense, I only really paid attention to Gravel and I thought he had a good game. Made some nice plays on the puck in tight spaces to clear the zone and had some pretty decent pinches in the o-zone as well. I think he'll be on the Kings next season. He and Schultz were to the 2 best defenders to my eyes tonight.

Anyway, maybe someone else who was at the game will post a legit scouting report and add his or her 2 cents. All in all, it was nice to see an actual victory on a banner raising night for once. I'll be going to more games since it's less than $20 for a ticket + parking. Not bad at all.

Players make mistakes otherwise we dont see any goals but wow. Those first 3 goals were pretty bad.

On the 2nd goal the Reign' 4th line tried to dominate in their own zone.

Then about a minute later, Dowd fed Zykov on the doorstep on a 2 on 1 to make it 3-3 before Bakersfield even knew what happened. The Mersch/Dowd/Zykov line finished the scoring in the 3rd period off a nice fore check and then completely knocking someone off the puck and then feeding a wide open Zykov in the circle and he beat Scrivens again.

A couple of notes from above. It was Crescenzi who feed the nice pass on the 2 on 1 to Zykov for the tying goal. And on the 5th goal, Mersch knocked the defender off the puck in the corner, Dowd almost simultaneously picked it up and threw it into the slot where Zykov cashed in beautifully.

Nice recap.

Reign shutout the Barracudas 3-0 tonight. Mersch with 2 goals and Kempe with the other goal. Budaj with 3 shutouts in 5 games.

Speaking of the Baracudas, I just got my ticket to the game next Sunday up here in San Jose against the Reign :yo:

The AHL site is saying Mersch only had 1. They're giving the 1st goal to Crescenzi. ('Course, I wasn't there. Just reporting what I read.)
On another note, nice to Kempe get his 1st.

I was there. Mersch scored the empty net goal at the end of the game by intercepting a pass and shooting from between the blue lines. Crescenzi scored the first goal, and Kempe has a nice PP goal on a sweet feed from Backman as Kempe crashed the net. Not sure where the Mersch had two goals came from.

Was anyone else who was at the game impressed with Zac Leslie? I thought he was outstanding for his first professional game. Poised on the point. Ran the PP like he was a 10 year veteran. Hard shot (first goal was a result of his hard shot that overpowered the goaltenders glove hand and left the puck on the doorstep for Crescenzi). Excellent skater. Took the body as necessary. Took some chances offensively driving deep into the O zone, played like he was not afraid to make a mistake (I'm looking at you Nick Shore).
