Erne didn't look good on the big ice? Oh, what a surprise.

Will Erne's grit be missed on the bottom 6? I don't know USA's roster.

Who cares about grit? US has Eichel, Tuch, Matthews, Larkin, Fasching, Hayden, etc. with size up front. This team won't get pushed around, and that's what matters more than "grit".

I'm wondering how they'll handle the center situation. I thought Compher played pretty well tonight and I expect him to have a fairly prominent role on the team but unless he shifts back over to the wing that would bump one of Larkin or Matthews to the fourth line. I'd much rather see those two bumped up and De Leo as the fourth line center. I think Compher has to go back to right wing.

I also think that Erne being cut means Wood has pretty much made the team. I don't get the hype from above about him and I still seriously question what a player who's playing prep hockey can bring against the stiffest competition they'll face but it is what it is. Just don't put him on Eichel's wing anymore, please.

I'd like to see Downing cut and if Santini is ready to go I'd be fine with Collins getting cut as well. If Santini can't go I think Collins stays.

Potential lines...

Motte-Eichel-Tuch
Schmaltz-Matthews-Compher
Milano-Larkin-Fasching
Wood-De Leo-Hayden
Bracco

Hanifin-Santini
McCoshen-DeAngelo
Butcher-Carlo
Werenski

Anyone have the highlights of the game?

It's also nice to see that Wood seems to have played himself onto the team, as a Devils fan.

Yeah, the Wood thing is strange. Obviously he is a nice player, but he's playing Prep hockey. Prep hockey in 2015, not Prep hockey in 1992, its not that good of hockey, he's essentially playing against 97, 98, 99s. Its a good 5 levels below NCAA hockey. They are cutting seasoned NCAA and CHL guys in favor of him. Almost like they got together before the camp and said, we need to find someone who know one expects to make the team, give him every opportunity, and take him, so we look smarter than everyone. Not like this is the first time. I just don't understand their logic. Especially putting him with Eichel. Lets get real.

None of these off the board players they have ever brought have done anything besides make people question the pick. This is going back to Brian Lee 10 years ago. I hope Miles Wood does turn out to be an impact player, I just don't see it. I think after the tournament, we will all be questioning this pick because it seemed forced. Make us wonder about Erne, Connor, Bailey, LaBanc, Dvorak, Garland, etc who didn't really get a good look.

I agree 100% they think they can find a Jim Vesey every year. Should just pick most experienced guy.

There's some good names and bonafide big time players you listed not given a chance. Miles wood can turn out to be a great player. I just don't know how a prep player comes in and is beating out these guys, if he plays well and has an impact good for him, but I'm with you. I just can't see it either.

And I agree, Most prep kids aren't even at the USHL level yet, crazy how he's overshooting USHL,CHL, NCAA stars.

I would be very surprised if Louis ended up making the team. He did not impress me at all in practice, where he appeared to be fighting the puck, passes were a bit off, etc. Especially considering De Leo (another tiny guy) is probably already on the team in the bottom six. Bracco also looks like he has a chance to make it as the 13th forward, so the amount of spots tiny guys can take is closing.

How did Fasching look? who is a good NHL comparison? I am up in Canada but hear this kid is pretty damn good

McCarron and Erne just didn't get the job done. No use having dead weight with better options for this tournament. Wood seems like a lightning in a bottle infatuation, but if he doesn't look out of place and gets the job done doest it matter what his current level of competition is?

It's just hard to imagine he'll keep up at a WJC pace when he's a prep hockey player. I think that's our biggest fear. If he proves me wrong it just makes me more happy

Jim vesey is definitely what comes to mind here. Wood is a pretty versatile guy with decent wheels. He seems like a perfect fit to be 13th forward in the fact that he can play multiple roles. I think he will be fine here

What's the thinking in terms of the likelihood of Santini being "ready to go"? I know he was cleared to play from 12/21 I think, but has there been any indication one way or the other?

I haven't seen anything but if he does make it there have to be questions as to whether or not he'll be rusty after the time off. I optimistically have him as a top two guy in my lineup above but it's quite possible they'll have to ease him back in. That's fine early on but I do hope he'll be back to 100% by the time they play Canada.

Did last night's game results change the goalie situation at all?

I don't think so. The first goal Nedeljkovic allowed was soft but BU didn't really force either goalie to make too many great saves. I still think the starting role is Demko's to lose but I agree with encouraging a healthy competition amongst the three.

I havent been following the USA roster too closely so far so this may be a redundant question, but is Cole Cassels on the team and is his suspension from the CHL valid for this tournament?

He's still on the roster and last I heard his suspension had been reduced by 2 games so he'd be available from the get go for the tournament.

That said, he was very underwhelming last night and I think he's lucky to have survived the cuts. I think he's on the bubble as of now to make the team as 13th forward.
