The guys need to shoot more. It's as simple as that. And I have a pretty good theory on why they didn't.
That rink in Ostrava is HUGE. There's easily a meter more of ice on both sides even from the standard international box. That means you have more space around you and your teammates. You can see them more clearly, which creates an illusion that they're just in position to bury it, even if they really aren't. They need to learn away from that, sort of readjust the sense of when to take the shot and when to look for another pass.
Other than that, I think there's no reason to call for anybody's head yet. We're all emotional after showing like that, but we'll have to wait and see.
Defense had some issues with their positioning, USA got far too many turnovers and 2-1 plays. Rink blindness again? Hard to say, though at least couple of them were simply due to a d-man (okay, Mäntylä) fumbling with the puck. Jitters, maybe? We'll have to see if their positioning improves before calling anyone s***tybad.
Rinne wasn't at his best, but we can account that to travel and jet lag. They shouldn't have put him out there yet, but he'll improve.
I doubt they'll mix up the lines any, since chemistry issues weren't really even the root of the problem. Konna and JMA find each other all right, they just need to work out that rink blindness issue. And while it still left something to be desired, I think this was the best we've seen from Jokinen and Barkov since they were shoehorned together. There might, just might, be hope there yet.
I have to say though, given how good Kemppainen was, I'd like to see him put back together with his partner in crime. Donskoi, while he wasn't bad, didn't look fully at home next to those two fat cats. Maybe...
Ruutu - Kontiola - Aaltonen
Pesonen - Barkov - Jokinen
Donskoi - Kemppainen - Louhivaara
Pihlström - Immonen - Hartikainen
They don't even have to mix the PP2 up with that, if they intend to carry on with the same unit. I'd like to see Salmela there though, to minimize the chance of turnovers and also because he's a shooter.
