Maybe you all should leave Gauthier alone. He was an offensive jewel back in his Midget days and has been productive in the Q. He is one of the few in Canada right now who can fill that 4th line role.

If the Leafs don't rush him he will be a top-flight AHLer before long and his offensive game will come around. He just needs a bit of time is all. He's already mastered the arts of defensive hockey. His offensive game will catch up. He has all the tools to succeed.

2011-12 CEB Midget AAA 39 GP 26-25-51
PLAYOFFS 13 GP 13-11-24

2012-13 Rimouski QMJHL 62 GP 22-38-60

Burning up AAA and then scoring almost a point per game as a rookie in the Q AND being great defensively.

Well, that was a bit of letdown after the dominating performance against Slovakia. A sloppy middle 30 minutes, book-ended by a strong start and finish to the game.

- Reinhart and Domi continue to impress, and look dangerous anytime they're on the ice. Duclair made some poor decisions with and without the puck and never seemed to get on track last night, so hopefully he'll bounce back vs. Finland.

- Moving Fabbri up with McDavid makes a ton of sense, though I'm a bit more skeptical of Virtanen. He doesn't appear to use his linemates particularly well, but does have the speed to hang with McDavid & Fabbri, and adds a needed dimension of physicality aggressiveness to that line. Like McDavid, Virtanen likes to have the puck on his stick to drive the offense, so we'll need to see how that works out between them.

- Petan has been great so far. Crouse, like Paul, is a solid, honest player who doesn't stand out in any one way but contributes when he's on the ice. Lazar seems like a better fit on this line than up with McDavid.

- - Ritchie proved last night why a lot of us didn't want him on the team in the first place. Completely ineffective, and his undisciplined play resulted in two penalties nearly 200 ft from our goal. I hope Groulx staples his ass to the bench for Gauthier had a solid game, going 10-for-10 on faceoffs and shouldering much of the load for the penalty kills. He's so poor offensively (decision-making, speed/acceleration, passing, stickhandling) that he severely limits the option of using that line in a shutdown role once we hit the tougher competition (i.e., we shouldn't want him playing 18 mins per game matched-up against Eichel, etc.), but if he continues to get limited 4th line minutes and contribute in that fashion, we should all be OK with that.

the remainder of the tournament.

- The D looks solid. I've been very impressed with Nurse (especially) and Morrissey. Theodore and Bowey look to be solid contributors at both ends, though prone to some odd decision-making at certain points. Heatherington will be in fine in a purely defensive role, likewise Morin, while Hicketts has IMO been a disappointment so far.

- Comrie looked poised and confident last night. If I had to pick between him and Furcale right now, I'd go with Comrie, but expect Furcale to get the start from Finland.

Can't disagree with any of those bullets.

And re: Gauthier and Ritchie I agree x 10.

Fucale will get the start for #Canada vs. Finland.

I'm perfectly fine with that. Either he's strong and shows off that NHL starting goalie potential or he's floundering and Comrie gets to carry the team.

He had good stats in Midget AAA at 16 while most quality players his age were in the QMJHL already. He had good stats in Midget AAA because he was 4-6 inches taller and 30-60 lbs heavier than everybody else.

When he arrived in the Q, he played with a 100 points winger. He had the same point average at 18 and now at 19.

He's not that good offensively, he's just bigger and against weaker opposition, it helps. Against the top junior players in the world, it doesn't help him. He projects as a defensive forward in the NHL. I doubt his offense ever develops.

I'm sort of torn. I kind of want Fucale to play well enough for Canada to get the W, but I also wouldn't mind an implosion so we get a better look at Comrie.

Comrie > Fucale (and his winz)

If it develops, it will be at 24/25.

@CraigJButton: Start with the Puck. @iihf_wjc @FredGauthier95 @MapleLeafs leading all players in face-off %. 16 for 19, 84.21%

Sorry but if you don't win faceoffs..... You cannot have the puck and control the game.

I'm sure you're not the only Canadian here who'd rather see Fucale lose than Canada win.

He's won 84% and people in here are saying he's lost most of his faceoffs? Just goes to show how biased against Gauthier they are when they're watching the games.

Actually your statement isn't true. While winning a faceoff is good and affects the amount of puck control, it's only a minor factor in controlling the game.

Average NHL impact of a faceoff win is 8-10 seconds for example.

Teams get killed in the faceoff department but control the game (and the opposite) all the time.

Not saying Gauthier is or isn't helpful or his worth on the team; just pointing out the truth.

Ritchie got pushed into the net. Same thing happened I Sam reinhart the previous game yet no penalty was called.

That wasn't "undisciplined" IMO.

---

Do you guys have the laundry list of good midget players who never went anywhere In their careers.

Just looking at Gauthier's stat line maybe he peaked in midget because he's stagnated in the Q. No upwards improvement since his rookie year.

Why not just hope he wins and that comrie gets the next start.

The NHL allegiances that affect opinions on this tournament has gotten nauseating and fans of my NHL team have contributed to that too.

Even if he was pushed, he certainly made no attempt to mitigate the impact and its not like Ritchie isn't a significantly larger player than the German defender who he made contact with. His second penalty was idiotic.

Those two plays are going to be penalized every single time by IIHF refs in the WJs, which is really the larger issue. A huge part of Ritchie's game is his physical play, which will eventually translate well to the NHL, but in the WJs he's a significant penalty risk and should have his ice time limited accordingly.

No Avs players on Team Canada so I don't really have anyone to cheer for. I just don't like seeing Fucale being thrown to the curb and going all in on Comrie. I remember when everyone wanted Binnington to be our starting goalie and he didn't exactly end up showing how great he was. I just want to see proof on the ice that one goalie is better then the other. Until then I have no problem with either one in net.

I hate Virtanen, seriously , I never saw a guy having a hockey sense as bad as him. He shoots the ****ing puck from the corner when he is on a 3 on 1 . It´s pathetic , I hope someone will tell him before the end of the tournament that he cannot do it all by himself...When you are on a 3 on 1 with McDavid and Lazar: pass the puck!

So you havn't seen him play the past two years, his improvments are easily noticeable.

You hate a guy because he plays similar to raffi torres low end or evander kane high end?

What improvements? Last time I went to see him play live, a few weeks ago or so, he was suspended for stupidly egging someone's car. Besides, you obviously didn't get the point of my post.

Don't call out people for seeing or not seeing certain players.
