With Hicketts making the team. I was wondering who was the last undrafted 18 year old to make team Canada.

Pearson came to mind, but he played as a 19 year old, correct?

Edit: Pearson, like Hicketts, was passed over in one entry draft. however Pearson has one of those Birthday's that put him (basically) 1 year older than his draft class.

2 years for me... never was really all that enthralled with the 1993/1994 groups. Although with the lockout my expectations for the 2013 tournament were a lot higher...but that's ancient history now. I've been waiting for the 1995s to have their day in the sun for a long time...

but I wouldn't get too far ahead of myself it I were you... as usual Hockey Canada has made some mind-bending, dumbass decisions... at the moment the roster includes 3 or 4 passengers, a couple of deadwood anchors and only 1 goaltender for whom I only have a shade more confidence than the other guy who is there for no other apparent reason than to give a good RDS interview...

I hope the 15 players who actually deserve to be there are enough to carry the day.

we'll see...

I know the 2013 team was loaded but they never seemed to gel. Even when the beat the Americans on NYE(? - if memory serves), they looked disjointed. This team looks more together than a team has looked in a while. And, TBH, I have never felt better about a Team Canada loss than I did about the one against Russia. We looked terrific.

Of course, with kids and a short tournament, anything can happen and if we lose, the sun will come up tomorrow so... :)

Amen, only been a few exhibition games but it's been a while since a team that looks this good on paper has looked as good if not better on the ice! Thank god

Nice to see mcdavid get an A which means he will get the ice time he deserves and not get the classic underage treatment (mackinnon/drouin/mcdavid last year) where they seemed to get shafted for ice even after making great plays

He sure improved as the game went on yesterday. That is obviously positive.

my expectations were high going in... that changed at about the 5 minute mark of the 1st period of the 1st game. There wasn't 1 game where they looked like they had it together, even the games they won.

Yup. Everyone kept saying, "Playing a tough NYE game will bring the team together and force them to gel like it has in past years". Sadly, that never happened.

LOL. fans!!! who ever said they live in reality?? They'll say whatever eases their troubled, sleep deprived minds as they cling to hope...if I say it maybe the universe will make it happen.

Even without an A I tihnk McDavid was going to get a tonne of ice time. He didnt play in 40 days and stood out to me as the best player on the ice, especially as the game went on.

Hes going to destroy this tournament and I'm glad hes been given a leadership role. Domi was pretty dumb last night but the Swedes were running around a lot by the end. It was an out of reach game and he hacked a guy. Better to do it now and have Groulx give him the gears than when it could cost a game in the actual tournament.

Last nights game I thought Reinharts line looked bad and all of a sudden something clicked and they put up some points. Looked really good by the end of the game. McDavid looked awesome out there. On the defense, Morrissey and Hicketts impressed me most, Nurse a very close third.

I didnt like Fabbri at all and it seemed like the fourth line did a whole lot of nothing. I know its the fourth line but with a few NHL first round picks on that line, they should do somehing out there that makes them noticeable

As a Blues fan, I was hoping to see Fabbri more in the highlights but it seems he had a pretty quiet game last night. I see that he got bumped down to the 3rd line with Lazar and Duclair joining the team (which totally makes sense. No complaints from me there). How has Fabbri looked so far in the tuneup games and scrimmages so far and how effective do any of you think Fabbri will be in a 3rd line role?

Hicketts and Morrissey should be our number one pairing. I was disappointed they didn't play the first unit powerplay together. Is the coaching staff trying to even out the pp units or something?

This team does seem to be gelling much better than the last two teams. Good quick passes, long and short, and most of them right on the tape. The last two years Canada couldn't complete simple passes even in January.

What a dumb post. Virtanen should be on the front line with Mcdavid.

Fabri or Petan would be smarter choices. Seems to me though that HC wants to go with 3 "scoring lines" hence the spreading of the talent on those 3 lines. 4th line of Virtanen, Gauthier, Crouse are 3 of the 4 worst forwards and deserve to be where they are.

Who is everyone expecting to lead Team Canada in scoring this year? Is there a consensus?

Be good to each other, guys. We have enough posters from other countries running down our kids, we don't need to run them down ourselves - or run down each other. I know I am guilty of it myself. :( We all have our opinions. No one is better than any other.

disagree the other D pairings aren't as trustworthy, split them up and provide stability in the top for at the very least. Bowey and sometimes Nurse scare me at times.

He gets bashed because of which team drafted him, just like every other player drafted by that club.

Jealous little brother syndrome is a big problem in this country when it comes to all things Toronto.

Not true in the slightest. People are upset at his inclusion because he's a speciality player. He's a defensive specialist and the team already has players equal or better than him at that aspect (Lazar and Reinhart easily).

This guy is 6'5" 220lbs, you'd think with that unreal combo of size and "IQ" he'd be more than barely PPG in the Q.

Not wanting Gauthier has nothing to do with the Leafs, you must be a Leaf fan to even suggest this. It's about wanting players you can expect offensive contributions from, not the guy trailing the play up the ice, not the guy who played 8 minutes a game at this tournament last year and contributed to the tire fire that was last years group.

to be fair Ritchie and Virtanen arent very good either
Yeah, it's not like Virtanen didn't spring Gauthier for a half breakaway against Russia only to have Gauthier circle the net and start a cycle, or when Virtanen hit the post yesterday (you might not have noticed Gauthier was off the ice).

Ritchie is playing with Connor McDavid, was a big part in Morrissey's goal last night too. He can dominate the boards like Gauthier but is actually a weapon in front of the net, not a defensive specialist.

direct all mud slinging towards the bureaucratic nincompoops at HC.

So I guess we shouldn't expect to see you in any other country's thread?
