HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread #91: 2025 Trade Deadline edition

Genuine question:

Can the Canes do better than Laine for pending UFA Rantanen? Remember they’re not looking to rebuild, they want big body goal scorer NOW…

- Laine would help address Car scoring need, but will stand out as a sore thumb in Rod da Bod’s forechecking system

- Laine’s signed for another season, similar to Necas’s term

Which team can provide a big body proven goal scorer better than Laine (despite all his faults)?

And then we miss the playoffs, Rantanen leaves and Demidovs line mates are Owen Beck and Alex Newhook.

It's not the time for us to go after a pending UFA that has no intention of signing with a team prior to FA.

They’re going to go after UFAs this summer anyway… why not try & improve the odds by having the premier UFA taste what Mtl fanbase playoff anticipation feels like….

I said it fervently last year, you should've traded Savard when his value was at it's highest last TDL. Now you'll be lucky to get a 3rd....
You win some, you lose some...you're not always going to be able to trade players at their highest value.

They got some decent years out of Savard and he brought some leadership that's been invaluable to some of our young Dmen.

It is what it is sometimes.

Been quiet on the Hughes front but the man has been consistently making things happen every year. I'll trust he's working on something nice.

Why is he only a 3rd? Feel like he's still automatic 2nd.

Is Savard as good as Dumoulin?

I mean we’d have $9m more to work with. You could easily find someone for that 2nd line if Rantanen bolts.

I'm not seeing anyone pending on the FA market that offers the upside of Laine. You're also competing against the entire league for those services. We haven't traditionally done well there.

Just doesn't make any sense for a guy who isn't signing with anyone.

Nah it was dumb then and it's dumb now.

Not a chance.
HuGo don’t want to trade anyone to begin with unless there’s a ridiculous offer coming out of left field

It’s become obvious, they’re in add mode

Wasn't the case last year....

Because he's been up front and honest that he didn't want to extend in Carolina because the trade from Colorado was a bit unexpected and it's been a whirlwind. That he wants to sit down at the end of the year and pick his destination at free agency after decompressing.

We aren't a team that can guarantee a run with him. Or a team that's in the driver seat to make the playoffs at all.

If he was open to signing then of course. But he's not.

Montreal has 7 picks in the first 3 rounds.

Any team trading for Savard or Armia would be a late 2nd round pick anways. What's the point? They already have plenty of picks as it is, they may as well make a run for the PO until the very end. Keep the fans happy, which means more people at the Bell Centre buying overpriced hot dogs and beers, more views on tv which equal more revenues from ads, and the players will appreciate.

Adding another pick that has a very low % of ever playing a single game in the NHL isn't worth it. Both their 2nd round picks will be much higher (theirs and Pittsburgh).

To me, unless its a first round pick, I'd pass. And I doubt anyone will pay that price.

My guess is the only trade Montreal will make before tomorrow is more likely to be a hockey trade to improve the team now, with term for the future.

Also they didn't seem to trust kovacevic that much. You can't enter the season with Kovacevic and Barron plus rookies on the right side. Unless they signed someone but too lazy to check who was free

I didn't think there was a high skill forward worth pursuing this deadline (fit-wise), but Raantanen changes that.

Should we pursue him? Although he might go back to Colorado this summer... but what if we can convince him to sign longterm?
The only way I go for Rantanen is if he's willing to sign an extension. If Carolina has any interest in Laine++ then perhaps there's a possible fit. If we add in a center like Cozens too then we'd have a lethal top 6 next season.
Demidov-Suzuki-Rantanen and Slaf-Cozens-Caufield would be an astronomical upgrade on our top 6.

If they trade Rantanen for Laine as the main piece they need to relocate
