I am saying he is better than a bubble player. He should have made the team, but Yzerman knew what he was doing, and to them the players they picked played a specif role. They still won. Its in Rob Blake's hands now, so I guess we will see what team he wants to build.

Oh my bad, sorry I wasn't totally sure what you meant. If they go in 2018, I think he'll be on it in place of Getzlaf as I don't think he'll be as dominant as he is now.

Yeah that was my bad. Did not word it very well, and didn't specify what I meant.

I'd like to see that link if anyone finds it.

You look at a guy like Jordan Eberle who's played for TC at the WHCs for 3 consecutive tournaments up to last year, and represented TC at the junior level establishing himself as one of the most decorated World Juniors player (ranked 1st on TSN's "Top 40 All-Time Canadian Juniors). He's THAT guy for you if you're looking for international experience. He must've been pretty disappointed he didn't even get considered for the Olympic team, and I honestly think he could've played better than Kunitz or Sharp, who I thought were the worst forwards for Canada.

But no, Eberle didn't make it because at the time, the management snubbed him probably because they simply thought others were better, or they simply were looking for certain types of players. Eric Staal is also one who consistently played in the WHC, but was snubbed because of depth.

I think he got snubbed because of who he plays for and the role he plays in their losing. He has forgotten how to win, and knowing how to win is extremely important in a short tourney like the Olympics. It's the same reason Hall wasn't even a bubble player this year. A players contributions to a teams success or lack thereof play a part in the selection process as well I would think.

There is this:

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/yzerman-watching-world-championship-with-sochi-in-mind/article4170361/

When we’re picking the Olympic team, we want to watch these guys,†he said Sunday.

A big part of the scouting process is focused on how players handle the larger international ice surface.

“It’s important for the guys who are really serious about the Olympics and want to be there,†said Yzerman. “Some guys, it can make a difference being here in this tournament.â€

“This tournament’s important for us,†said Yzerman. “You hear about the world rankings, but it’s important for the (Olympics) — the way your schedule is set up and what not. We want to do well at this tournament.

“We’re trying to get a successful program going and we haven’t wo a gold since 2007.â€

^ MVW got it spot on. I also think Yzerman reiterates this in one of his CBC interviews.

Either way, I think it would be smart for Seguin to go. I just don't like him having a hissy fit over TC (not getting selected to U18's and Ivan Hlinka), if he is having one.

Mackinnon, Read, and Schenn were added to the Canadian Roster.

Mackinnon going to the worlds will only help raise his stock as an international player in my opinion.

Can't wait til this thing kicks off... Excited to see what Monahan, Backlund, and Baertschi can do on international ice. Mony and Sven to play on the first day of the tourny, gotta catch up on that!

Schenn added as well? A lot of centers on that team aren't there? Don't know if Monahan's going to get much playing time with Hodgson, Scheifele, Kadri, Turris, Bozak, and now Schenn... Kadri and Schenn maybe are going to be played as wingers but that's still quite stacked at the center position.

Yeah Brayden Schenn was added as well.

In practice, Monahan was the 13th so take it for what it's worth.

I think this is very beneficial for us. Not only do a bunch of our best players/prospects get some high end hockey competition in, Treliving gets a chance to see them in action close up..

Very interested in how JH and Baertschi do

Sven Baertschi added the the Swiss team. Yay. Let's hope he rips it up.

I hope so too and increases his trade value. I just think Sven has a bad attitude and don't see him on the Flames going forward here.

I was listening to an interview with him on The Fan a while back and he just came across as loathing and that he doesn't want to be in the AHL and playing for the Heat.

The Flames have clearly established a team first and winning culture here and Baertschi will have to change if he wants to play for the Flames.

I don't think it's bad attitude, no one wants to be demoted to the AHL when they think they're ready for the NHL. Sven probably thought he should be playing with the Flames as he would clearly know better than anyone that he's better than some guys already on the team. IMO he would've played better than Galiardi and Jones at the least, but it just wasn't going to work with him getting 3rd line minutes every game.

Good piece on Sven regarding the World Championships. Sounds like Sven is handling things the right way.

http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=717898

“In the end, I’m going there for me,†said Baertschi, who had 13 goals and 29 points in 41 regular season games with the Heat. “That’s the one thing. The only thing that is important for me is to go over there and play hockey and play hockey the way I can. The rest will show. He’s going to have his own opinion about me and the only thing I can do is play as good as I can. That’s it for me.

“In the end, he’s going to form his opinion of me. I’ve got a chance to show him early. Afterwards, it’s going to be training camp. It’s a big chance for me right now that I can show him something.

“In the end, whenever you get an opportunity to show something, then you have to bring it. This is an opportunity now. I’m going to a different country, I’m able to play on a different team and for me, I think it’s important thatI do well and I can show off.â€

TJ Galiardi and David Jones are both pretty solid and can play a team game even though they can be non contributors point wise on most nights and they're veteran players.

The guys I though were good and was impressed with were Kenny Agostino and Bryce Van Brabant. Those are the guys that Sven Baertschi is going to compete with for a roster spot even though he is more of a scorer.

Also, both Brian Burke and Brad Treliving are saying the Flames need to get bigger so 1-2 players on the current roster will be traded.

Galiardi and Jones were brought in to compete for Top 6 roles and to produce consistently, at least according to Feaster, they were expected to be secondary offensive producers. They weren't brought in to be 3rd/4th-liners. I don't know what your definition of "team game" is but when Galiardi had his spot locked on the 3rd/4th line, he often looked without the jump or energy that was required for a bottom-liner. Don't really know what happened with him, I thought he was okay for the first stretch of games at the start but his game just seemed to lack confidence and not work.

Jones I thought had great skating abilities for a player his size, but he really showed limitations when it came to creating chances. His +$4M contract wasn't brought in to have him play inconsistently, and I think it was Feaster's mistake of not realizing his limited set of skills and merely going for a big-sized forward. I'm hopeful Jones will improve next season though, he has the size and speed to be an impact player but he really needs to improve his hands.

I'm also aware it's a goal for us to get bigger, but that doesn't mean smaller guys like Sven, Hudler, and Gaudreau won't have a place on the team.

JG scored in his first exhibition game. Judging by their forward group, Johnny has to be playing a top six role for them.

Treliving will learn the special skillset on this little guy, and find some big forwards to compliment him in our top six next year. BOOK IT

I'm just going to ride the hype train until someone kicks me off.

I don't think Johnny Gaudreau has anything to worry about at this point. There's no denying that he is a highly skilled player.

I'm sure the Flames will put size around him as much as they can and hopefully that will be enough for Johnny to be able to play and flourish as well.

If you watched the game he played in, he did look really small out there. Yet he still scored a goal.

At this point I think he will be okay, he has to much skill and hopefully his size won't be to much of a problem for him.

Honestly, I never thought he looked small in the one game he played, I was never able to look and be like oh that tiny guy is Gaudreau, I had to find his number all game. He is very small, but he does not in any way play small and that is extremely important.

As far as your comments on who Sven will be competing with for spots, he will never be competing with Van Brabant, or Agostino. They fill a very different role from Sven, a 4th line role for Van Brabant and a 3rd line role for Agostino. Baertschi will be competing for a top 6 role or he will be in the AHL. He is not and never will be a bottom 6 forward. He is a top 6 or bust player in my opinion, and I do not in any way think that he will be the latter.

Baertschi is learning how to score consistently in professional hockey while at the same time not be a liability defensively. He knows it's a process, and by the sounds of it he is going to work very hard to get in the new GM's good books right off the hop. Something he failed to do with Brian Burke. Another year with Ward would also not go amiss with his development however much he would prefer to be in the NHL.
