With talks about how Columbus would want to make a 3 for 1 trade because of the depth, what 3 players would be offered up? We all know JD and Jarmo would want to upgrade the team so making a combo out of players like Tropp and Comeau won't get you anything great. Would a combo of Tropp(RFA) ,Comeau(UFA), and Gaborik(UFA) get them something? Would they throw in Calvert in a package or even Anisimov?

What talks? I haven't seen any. Also, Calvert? I would hope not. He is a key. It shows when he plays and when he doesn't.

I know recently Portzline was saying it and I also saw it prior to the Olympic break but can't remember if it was him again or someone else.

Doesn't it makse sense though? With Comeau, Gaborik, and Boll returning it's going to be a major log jam up front. Jarmo also said he feels Skille has earned himself a NHL spot but he's stuck in the AHL. Only good thing about the log jam is the players said it will be like a competition for a roster spot and it will make you play hard every shift you take.

Gotcha. Yeah if they're gonna make a move it makes sense, from a salary and contract perspective.

The Tropp/Comeau scenario is interesting. They bring different things to the fourth line. Comeau is clearly the more estaboished player, and thus perhaps more reliable. But Tropp matches the smaller, speedier style of Letestu and Mackenzie. I wondered aloud before the break whether Comeau might be moved. I don't know how much value he adds to a Gaborik deal.

It makes sense. That wasn't the point. I just don't like starting a rumor when no one of importance has said that.

So what you're saying is JJ is single handedly responsible for a 10 goal swing? That's pretty impressive! :D

I've tried to say that JMFJ was good enough to be on the team that won silver, he improved since then, but suddenly became worse than Orpik. I was saying the same thing prior to the Olympics, I couldn't see any logic behind Orpik/Martin presence on the US team and Benn's goal was a final chord for the selection failure.

This. Although he struggled a bit before the break, when he is on his game, he's a big part of the team.

Was reading The Fourth Period and saw once again that Ales Hemsky is rumored to be traded and in a shocking twist, the CBJ may be interested. Not saying we should or should or shouldn't trade for him, but how funny would it be that a guy Scott Howson wanted so badly when he was GM here, he himself is part of the group that trade him here?

I have ZERO interest in trading for Hemsky and I hope Columbus does too.

Gaborik being in the lineup is a better version of Hemsky, so a big no to any interest in Hemsky. Tell Howson to buzz off.

The only rumor I've seen that makes some sense recently is Tuomo Ruutu. He would fit well in our top nine. The only problem is I'm not sure why Carolina would look to trade him as they are in the hunt too.

With Gaborik due back I would like to see something like:

Jenner Johansen Horton - This line has performed well and has size and skill.

Umberger Anisimov Gaborik - RJ can play either wing and adds fore-check and D support. Balanced with some size and skill

Foligno Dubinsky Atkinson - Speed, skill and some grit. Again, I think it's balanced and don't think Atkinson fits with Letestu and MacKenzie

Calvert Mackenzie/Letestu - Either Mac or Letestu on wing. Calvert adds some grit and skill. Fits well in my book.

Options...a good thing

...why in G-d's name would we need Hemsky? We're jammed full to overflowing with quality RWs.

TFP, Sportnet and anyone else putting Hemsky and CBJ together need some new material. It's not cool to be so outdated.

I think Hemsky has been tained in CBJ fans eyes because of years of "Johansen for Hemsky" proposals (and similar types) on the main board. He'd be okay, and I think getting out of Edmonton might revitalize him.

He's not my first choice but I'd be cool with him for the right price.

I'd go along with that if it weren't for that whole Gaborik-Horton-Atkinson-Umberger-Tropp-Comeau-Boll thing...

...okay, okay, I'll be fair. Umby sometimes plays LW too. :)

Not bad, and I wouldn't mind trying it, but I'm a bit skeptical that Umby is going to be much help to Arty-Gaby. Those guys can thrive on extended passing plays (something Umby usually can't do), whereas the Dubinsky-Atkinson duo scores on more bang bang, steal it and whack it in plays. So I say put Umby with Dubinsky-Atkinson and Foligno with Arty-Gaby.

I like Tuomo Ruutu, but he's pretty much a lower scoring Umberger, who we can't fit in our top 9 when healthy.

I'm not sure how we'd work in Ales Hemsky into the lineup, but he's a much better player than his numbers indicate (which is strange to say because he's god-awful defensively). He still has more than enough skill to hit a point per game in the right situation, I'm just not sure if that situation is here.

Who would you play him over in our top 6?

I think when Gaborik has a couple of games under his belt, the lines are going to be:

Gaborik-Johansen-Horton
Umberger-Anisimov-Foligno
Calvert-Dubinsky-Atkinson
Jenner-MacKenzie-Letestu
Comeau/Tropp

In terms of trades, I really think that GMJK is going to use some of this roster depth to go after a veteran upgrade on defense. I'm not sure what direction they look. Tallinder from Buffalo is interesting (but he's a rental), Matt Greene (1 year left) might add some physical presence and he's won a Cup.

It's that second line that feels like a waste to me. They've scored enough but mostly through individual efforts, I think all three could score even more if they were on lines with better chemistry.

That would be a mistake if they did that, IMO. Jenner is too good to be on the 4th line. He works perfectly with Johansen and Horton. No reason to change that. Plus, it gives us more scoring on the 2nd line by having Gaborik there over Umberger.

Nice analysis. Of course I don't agree with every detail but in general I like his thinking. I don't see Umberger as being very good this year. okay is more like it imo. I hope he is right about Erixon and like his thinking of bridge deals for both he and Joey.

Looking forward to his big picture look. Pete, make sure you give us a heads up because I'll forget to look on my own. Keep up the good work.

Here is the Big Picture:
