Can someone explain to me why O'Reilly is constant trade bait for the Avs?

He refused to negotiate an extension with them, held out and kept playing in the KHL, and then signed an offer sheet with the Calgary flames. Due to the terms of the deal he signed with Calgary, which has a base salary of $6.5 million, the Avs will have to qualify him at $6.5 million in order to retain his rights as an RFA this summer. So basically, in order to keep him they will have to pay him more than Duchene and Landeskog and obviously he won't take a pay cut, so a long term deal will be very expensive.

...that, and the fact that he held out and refused to sign with the Avs are reasons why his name is always in the rumor mill.

However, Now that classy Sakic is running the show, they are good and have a potential coach of the year, there may not be any the same issues in existence between him and front office that lead to the hold out.

Probably more of Portzline's suggestions/opinion rather then legit rumours but saw these 2 questions/answers from todays chat.

Hi Porty, thanks for the great coverage (but mad abot the lack of poddys..) any truth to the Brandon Dubinsky for Tuomo Ruutu rumors? Read multiple reports about CBJ interest in Ruutu but conflicting things on the cost.

Portzline:
I could see Ruutu becoming a Blue Jacket, yes. I think Ruutu will be moved yes, but only if the Hurricanes are willing to eat a lot of his contract. That's a ridiculous bill of sale and he can't be moved unless some of the money is held back. But, I don't see anyway the Blue Jackets would trade Dubinsky for Ruutu. Nobody's untouchable in Jarmo's world, but a trade like that would make no sense on any level. Dubinsky is sooo important to this Blue Jackets team. I don't know why more people don't see that.

and

Realistically, who are a few players you could see Jarmo trying to pick up? - See more

Cammalleri, Ott, Moulson, O'Reilly ... there's a few guys out there. And I think Jagr could be a Penguin again, a fitting end to his career. If it's ever finished -

Thoughts?

I've seen Ruutu's name linked to Columbus but don't recall it being in exchange for Dubinsky. Wouldn't mind Ruutu but like Portzline said, only if the Canes pick up a lot of his cap hit. Last year, they ate 50 % on Jokinen's contract and he's been solid for the Pens.

As for the other names he suggested. JD did say no rentals but who knows and Dater said he thinks the Av's will hold onto O'Reilly for at least this season. Maybe Jarmo goes after him at the draft?

Bruce Garrioch reported the Dubinsky rumor: http://www.ottawasun.com/2014/01/11/toronto-maple-leafs-looking-for-help-up-front-could-be-willing-to-unload-a-defenceman saying "Hearing the Blue Jackets are willing to move C Brandon Dubinsky and his $4.2 million cap hit through 2014-15"

I'm not sure where the Ruutu rumors came from although there is the obvious Finnish connection and their cap hits seem to be close according to cap geek.

The contract holdout and extreme bad blood that caused it ( though many conveniently forget that basically all the front office is new) additionally there is the $ amount of his contract, which is only likely to go up and the fact that as of late the avs have not been a cap team.

Any team with ROR would need to qualify him at $6.5MM (or whatever it is) but they don't have to pay him that unless he signs the offer as a 1 year tender. That's just to retain his rights so it's possible that someone could obtain him and sign him to a 7 year $5.5MM deal (for example).

I'm not sure what he would want but I certainly would take him on the CBJ long term. It would end the Gaborik "era" :) but I'd gladly have someone of that caliber on our team through his 20's...

Porty shot down all Dubinsky rumors. He's not leaving unless gross overpay.

I have no interest in Ruutu.

No one from the front office tells Porty anything - he has no sources. He doesn't report any news or break any trades or offer any insight into potential upcoming transactions.

Yep other than the Jeff carter deals (both of them), Steve Mason deal, tons of contract signings, the pursuit of JD, etc etc

Yeah you're right. Porty isn't plugged in at all. He and I actually have the same amount of sources.

I get it, sometimes his 'reporting' isn't always the top notch or most popualr opinion and he seems to have a blind view on the muck and grind style of play. But the dude is pretty money, with regards to the CBJ.

Portzline really pissed off the FO around 3 years ago (during the Arniel years) when he reported on some injuries that the team would rather have kept under wraps.

He's been out of the loop since then, just making educated guesses. That isn't to say he's Bruce Garrioch but he's not exactly Bob MacKenzie

Wasn't aware of this. But that FO is long gone now. I'm sure there might be some reluctance, but I am also sure there is a turn of a new leaf with the FO.

Arniel was pissed at everyone in the press because they kept exposing his incompetence (just keep piling on!)... and by doing so, exposing the incompetence of the person who hired him.

I was hoping for an upgrade to Nikitin or moving him to allow Erixon to play and get experience. I don't think the drop off would be significant and still think we are a playoff team but not cup contenders. Tyutins injury probably impacts my hope.

I've read Columbus recently had two scouts at an LA Kings Manchester affiliate game. The primary guy of interest could be former 1st pick Forbort (D). If this were to be the case, what roster player can you see your team letting go for Forbert + ? Maybe Foligno or Umberger? Kings need LWs.

If we're trading for a Dman, it's likely a veteran Dman. Not a prospect, we have enough of those.

Not sure why the Jackets would be looking at defensive prospects. We have a load of em.

When can we start talking about extending Foligno and Dubinsky? To me that's the core of the team and they're both UFA after next year. I'd like to get extensions completed this summer. A few more years of both would be great, and I think raises are in order.
