I'd buy low on him, and I wouldn't give much. Maybe Erixon and a couple of picks. Of course EDM refuses, but it is what it is. I see nothing so far that makes me want to deal a guy like Jenner for him. Nothing. I'd rather be patient with the forwards we have and add a proven talent at some point than trade potential for potential.

Seconded ... maybe I add a couple of second rounders to Erixon, but nothing more than that, honestly.

Funny how that draft worked out. For so long many on this board longed for Yak. But EDM won the lottery, picked Yak, we went with Murray and wound up actually winning the lottery.

I've been looking back at that draft a lot lately. It is pretty amazing how it has all worked out so far. Not only does it still amaze me just how many defensemen were in that draft, just look at how many are making big impacts in the league. Murray, Rielly, Lindholm, Trouba, Maatta, etc... I mean, that's only a few and combined that would be a respectable NHL defensive corps.

Yak may still work out for the Oil but I have to say the rate at which he is progressing still surprises me. They pick one of the aforementioned defensemen and I think they are in a much different spot in Edmonton right about now.

Still a few question marks with guys like Grigorenko and to some extent Hertl after his recent injury.

One day, though, I believe we will all look back at this draft and see the team that really won it to be Nashville, who didn't even pick in the first round. The Erat for Forsberg trade has to be one of the most embarassing trades ever. George McPhee and Ted Leonsis are going to have a lot of sleepless nights when that dude eventually breaks out as a star.

As to the question of what do the CBJ do here, I'm still in the camp of "Don't rock the boat". Unless, of course, there's an offer Jarmo can't refuse. He may have said no rentals, but I still say keep Gaborik, ride out the season, let him walk in the offseason for cap space or sign him to an incentive based contract if he will entertain such a notion, and then take care of whatever business needs taken care of in the offseason, such as the Johansen deal .

If we can make the now and future team better by moving minimal key present pieces I'm all for it. Personally I think a solid piece like Atkinson would only get moved for a clear upgrade. I don't want to do anything lateral and think this team is already a playoff team. The next moves are to complete a Stanley Cup contending roster. That's off season in my opinion.

If Erat can fetch a high end prospect like that--I wonder what Gaborik could get. We need to find a crazy GM desperate to make a deal like that.

Im thinking IF he is traded it would probably be a 1st and something coming back for cap purposes. Maybe a prospect if they are desperate. If we could sign him in the 6mil range I'd just keep him. Save a little on him and with the cap going up pay Joey and have lots left. Nikitin is really the only other expiring contract with questions on what to do about it, personally I think Erixon is ready so if he is moved there is a bit more money. Put me in the group of people saying find us goaltending help and let the young guys grow and do their thing. Yes more skill would be nice but it's coming, if Jarmo can pull off a big trade then all the power to him but when I look at what JK and JD did to help St.Louis I don't mind being patient.

There is no way I would pay Gaborik $6 million per year.

Id like to get him on the same value as Horton without the years obviously but i dont see it happening. Who are free agents we could throw money at? Vrbata, Moulson, Cammalleri? Going for FA always leads to overpaying and they all have their own question marks aswell. Also I think there is a chance you get Gaborik on less of a term. Id just like to buy some time and get the young guys some experience and Gaborik could do that. If hes traded for a 1st and that 1st and flipped with something for a piece then cool, I just want to keep our youth.
Leading up to the deadline could be interesting and give some hints to the off season. Such a short time between the Olympics and the deadline should make things fun

Luckily, you are not the owner or GM

I think with Gabby it will be more a question of term rather than the $ themselves. For a 3 year deal $6 mill might be reasonable. for 6 or 7 no thanks.

I go back and forth on what should be done with him. My preference is to have a healthy 25-30 goal guy for the next 3 years. 2nd choice is to get as much for him at the deadline as possible. I don't want to keep him for the playoff drive and have him walk for nothing.

I don't care who else is available. I don't pay a guy just because there are no other options. I'd rather not spend the money than overspend on a player. Why do we need to buy some time for the young guys? We already have a full team and Gaborik isn't even playing right now.

Very well stated. I think this is a perfect look at why the Jackets didn't pony up the big money for Jan Hejda a few years back.

Well we can see how the 2nd half plays out. There are a couple of things up front that could use some upgrading and atleast Gaborik is a guy we shouldnt have to overpay for or give up assets. Yeah it's kind of a risk I guess but if he's on a 2 year deal or so for less money then who cares. I'd probably try him with Anisimov and Foligno to see what happens and then maybe let Umberger play with Dubi and Atkinson for a bit. It's crowded but stuff happens and there are lots of options.

I don't disagree. I just wouldn't sign Gaborik for more than 1 year and I don't see any way he would sign for just one year. Any money spent on him for more than 1 year could have eventually gone to someone else. That extra money can be used to trade for someone who makes more, to sign someone, etc....

Since you brought it up I think that was a mistake. Jan played well, He wanted to be here, He's continued is good play since gone, We could use a player like him for the push and the $/term difference wasn't that much.

Agreed. We are in a position now where we have a little bit more caproom than we know what to do with. But signing old guys like Gaborik for longer than one year is a bad idea. A year or two from now we might really want that space.

Well, let me ask you this. Would you rather have Jan Hejda or James Wisniewski? That's the choice they made at the time.

You're right, he has played well. Since signing with Colorado (at a $3.25/year cap hit):

181 games played, 12 goals, 31 assists, and a -12 overall rating in that time.

Not dominant numbers, but not bad ... for a second/third pairing guy. That averages out to about 6 goals and 16 assists, a -6 rating over full seasons. Would he make us a better team right now? I highly doubt that ... maybe he keeps us from struggling so much in the year right after he left, but let's not get too upset over his loss. Long-term, I think we're better off without him.

Hejda. Wiz is playing his best hockey for us in his last 20 games I admit. The body of his work, however, has been atrocious. He also makes almost double what Jan makes. He is either our slowest player or second slowest. That would be Savard. Wouldn't it be nice to have Hejda rather than him?

Yes, because Hejda has such a great shot from the point, is such a great skater, and moves the puck so well

I won't go to the mat on this but would say that Jan Hejda is that kind a player that can be effective but doesn't show up on the scoresheet, and that's good.

I like Jan so this is not a knock on him. But sometimes it's about what the team needs. This team needs offensive punch - scoring from the point and someone to run the PowerPlay. Wiz gives us that.

You should know better than to judge a shutdown defenceman by point totals.

I do think we could use a player like what Jan Hejda was during his tenure here. None of our guys are good enough defensively to warrant being considered *the* shutdown guy. This doesn't mean I want Jan Hejda himself, he's paid a bit much, would probably cost a decent asset to receive in a trade, and is getting up there in age. A Dan Hamhuis sure would be nice.

Murray is probably the closest we have and he's much more of a two-way player who skates the puck and looks to pinch or make the long passes.

What we could use is a physical, stay at home defensive defenseman who has size and can play on a top-pairing with Johnson or Tyutin.
