I expect many teams, like Columbus, to inquire and be turned off by the asking price. In fact Lebrun has reported that a few GM's have commented on the high asking price, "The price is "significantly high," says one Western Conference source. "Really high. And I guess I can't blame them," says a different source. ".

The more serious contenders like Chicago and St.Louis will probably be more inclined to pony up the asking price. Adding Kesler to either team for the next 3 playoff runs would significantly increase their Cup chances.

We really do have an inflated view of Kesler don't we? What you are paying for really isn't for offensive production. That's what drive contract demands more than anything.

I have no doubt the asking price is about 3x more than he's worth (much like Callahan would be), especially with 2 more years left on his contract. He has a NTC, so frankly I found nothing interesting about the discussion as it sits.

What I do find amusing is when people get turned off on a player trade because of a fans opinion. The vast majority of fans can't even get close to what the value of a deal would be or the players involved. We had such differing views on Nash and we knew that Howson had a massive chubby for Dubinsky and that Erixon seemed a piece that NY would be willing to move.

Very true. There's no doubt Kesler deserves to fetch a big command for the Nucks, he's a great player. I just don't think we should add him to our 'building' phase. I think it would be best to stay the course.
Big difference between asking price and what the final deal ends up as.

Very true as well.

Good ****ing G-d. I knew it was a hard sell ("position need" and scarcity of player types tends to get blithely ignored anytime someone sees OMG SHINY SUPERSTAR), but apparently even other Jackets fans somehow failed to get the point of that one.

"Look, Viqsi's talking about how building a team around a star winger has been tried here before and failed miserably and so doesn't want to trade a likely up-and-coming #1C for another superstar winger. How silly! Oh, hey, look, there's this idea concerning a trade of that same #1C for someone who's similar in skillset but not in upside and also plays C. Clearly these are closely related, ha ha!"

EDIT: On the actual move possibility itself... I'd like to believe that maybe, just maybe, Umby and Kesler can learn to get along if they're on the same team, and I'd like what Kesler would do for our C depth. But yeah, no Joey. Let's not be absurd.

Yikes, I wasn't expecting that response. I didn't mean I was making fun of your comments in the Ovechkin thread. I meant that if you prized Joey so much that you wouldn't trade him for Ovechkin, then I was expecting you'd just go ballistic at trading him for someone like Kesler. So, I was saying I'd join you on that fire brigade. Geesh…

Anyways, moving on…I think we're all pretty clear that no one would trade Joey for Kesler.

Tyler Myers is evidently available....

After tonight I think we need a little of everything! :help::shakehead

Would you rather have Myers or Erhoff(has a NMC/modified NTC)? I guess I will add Edler(has a NTC) as well. Who would cost more? Are these guys more offensive and not great on defense? If so, would they help? I think Columbus needs more of a shutdown, especially with Prout being poor this season.
Or should they just go after a rental(even if they said no rentals) instead? Evaluate the D long term over the Summer?

I think Myers is who we would want the most, and the most expensive. Being a RHD and a big guy with a big shot would help alot, and let Prout work out his kinks. I wouldn't mind getting any of the 3, but Edler scares me. He hasn't been very good in the past two years for Vancouver, but he could just need a change.

I still think we should just stay the course, though.

Burke also said based on trade chatter he expects a flurry of league wide trade activity leading up to the trade deadline. #wishfulthinking

As always, building it up for disappointment

What would you guys give up for Myers? What would Buffalo ask for Myers?

Don't know. Can we? That's a lot of games and the margin is fairly small. I would like a depth veteran d-man. However, I would also like Erixon up here.

If I were in the GM's chair, I'd be awfully reluctant to make any moves. This is still a young team of players in their prime or guys who aren't there yet, and it wouldn't make sense to start tinkering too much without it representing a clear upgrade at a position of need. I'd rather miss the playoffs than ship any of the current core out to make a run at something that almost undoubtedly would be a run that ends short of the conference finals.

apparently BUF isn't worried about any Risk Recapture Penalties

There's no guarantee he'll be traded, but BUF asked Christian Ehrhoff for list of 8 teams he doesn't want to be traded to (per his NTC).

Actually if I am the GM I've got my list complied of the guys that I think need to be moved. As I am watching this team more and more, I'm seeing some players that aren't as invested and players that make too many mental mistakes. That's probably not addressed at the deadline, but if there's a chance to make a long term hockey move that makes sense for the team - go for it.

Now, having said that; you can usually pick up a depth/rental/vet for something outside of the "core". You know that as well as I do. Moving someone in the "core" would involve getting someone back as part of the "core". You switched from being (overly, perhaps) cautious; to suddenly moving someone from the core.

We tend to make deadline deals far too over-dramatic. Most times you can get a player that can help for a second or third and maybe a tier 2 prospect. We don't need a Tier 1 type rental - the guys that cost you a first+. In other words, I'm not looking for a Vanek or a Moulson.

Easy answer for me is Myers. He's younger and his current contract was actually front loaded so even though his cap his is $5.5MM it's a declining value contract. 5 years remaining rather than the 7 years for Erhoff and he's only 23 years old. He's playing quite well this year too and appears to be on the upward trend.

Now that would give us 4 long term $5MM(estimated) d-men on the team but I think his current level and upside exceeds everyone but Murray on this team. He's likely a top pairing guy at some point (maybe now?) and plays in all three zones. Has a great point shot and is bigger than Prout as I recall.

Buffalo would want a good return. I proposed several options but ultimately Atkinson, Rychel and Dansk on the main (I know, I know several of you will kill me on here). Reason being, Rychel is a high end prospect (one has to be included and I think he's got more risk than Wennberg and more value than Dano). Atkinson is a top 6 guy and established young NHLer (tough to give up, other option was Anisimov) and Dansk is a high end young goalie (The question with that is, do we believe in Bob? If so we still have Forsberg, Korpisalo and can sign a backup and draft another goalie - I think we should draft one every year regardless).

I would then be more open to possibly moving JJ this off season (at draft) but my preference would be Wiz (I value his point shot and toughness but think his holes are bigger than his benefits - decent year or not). Nikitin is most likely gone and I'm not sold on Prout (never have been so I'm not basing it on last night). Golo and Erixon can be added to this team and we still have veteran leadship and a likely couple of young studs.

Flame away....

I don't have enough of a belief in Bobrovsky (staying with Columbus or continuing to play well) to trade Dansk. I am okay with the other guys in the list.
