Not really thrilled about that one. He hasn't really shown anything thus far in the NLA (19GP 0G 6A 22PIM and -9). I expect him to be the odd man out on our team at the Spengler Cup..

Interesting to see what the best team you could build for Canada would be. How many Canadian players are there in Europe or/and the NLA.

Estimations:

NLA: 40-50
SEL: 20-30
FEL: 20-30
KHL: 50-60
DEL: 70-80
EBEL:50-60

Canada teams for this tournament have not been the same since the lock out a couple of years ago. Hockey Canada got to lighten up a bit about who Canada can choose from for this tournament.

So... Who's in the Spengler Cup this year?

Canada vs The Romanian Ice Gymnasts vs The Transylvanian Neck Biters vs Bavarian Weißwursts

I watch every year but I have no idea what this tournament is. :(

Always funny to watch this tournament.

It's funny because the games are glorified shinny games played on a huge sheet of ice. Every game seems to end 7-6 or something along those lines lol. For those that watch I would assume it's just something to pass the time during the holiday season. The tournament is always entertaining in that sense, the one true time this tournament had some great players and skill was in the lock-out year. It was awesome and at the same time weird seeing Joe Thornton playing for Davos, Danny Briere playing for some German club and Canada stacked with superstars like Tavares, Spezza, Duchene, Patrice Bergeron, Seguin. Probably will never see a Spengler Cup roster with that much talent again.

So the Spengler cup is a tournament which provides entertainment because of low quality of play. There's another one in a similar time slslot that you can say the same about

All sports are a form of entertainment obviously but my point was in my opinion people either find the games "funny" like another poster said or don't take it very seriously due to the poor quality of teams. Like do you honestly expect many of us Canadians to get pumped up for a game that features Chuck Kobasew and Team Canada up against some random German or Czech club..like I said for those that watch I'm sure it's amusing and fun but the tournament doesn't mean a whole lot.

That's just because you don't know anything about European hockey :shakehead Actually, both the German and Czech leagues are among the best in Europe..

OK I understand why most North American have no interest int his tournament and think it is very low level of hockey but here are a couple of facts :

- There is good hockey outside of the NHL
- A lot of people in Europe (especially Switzerland) cares about this tournament.
-Level of hokey might be low it is still a lot stronger than the WJC.
- We saw last year that an AHL team wasnt strong enough to play in this tournament.

With that being said, I have a big WTF when I saw the Canadian roster I was expecting good players from outside NLA but they brought players that I dont think are good enough to play in this. Ryan Martindale and Curtis Hamilton..really?? GM Tambellinni clearly wants to give a break to Oilers draft picks he made that didnt work out in North America. Giliatti, Hedden and Walter..???
Only good pick seems to be Drew MacIntyre who can be a solid goalie.
Overall I think Team Canada might have the weakest roster ion the tournament... and by adding the fact that they havent played together at tall... they might struggles a lot in the tournament.

As for the lot of criticism of Chuck Kobasew, I dont get it. The guy had a decent career. (I bet half otf Team Canada WJC roster this year wont have his career.)

Anyway I wish a good tournament for the poeple who cares!!

I'm a Canadian that prefers this tournament over the Juniors. Problem is, it's truly hard to get new people interested when Canada has a roster like they do this year. It's understandable that Chuck Kobasew doesn't bring in the same interest that Matt Duchene did a few years back.

But wait until the tournament actually begins. Those Canadians wont get a chance to represent the team at any other level, other than maybe the Deutschland Cup. They'll put their hearts on their sleeves and put on a show.

In the past it was also interesting for me to watch this tournament and see which names I recognized. I find it an interesting tournament because it is teams I don't know, so I don't know what to expect from them or anything, and it's a different style of hockey than I'm used to. Honestly, Christmas time is my second favourite time of year for hockey, because we have two great (but very different tournaments) in the World Junior's and the Spengler, and it's double the amount of hockey for me to enjoy.Plus, since I don't watch any of the teams on a regular basis I get to just bjectively enjoy the skill of both teams

Calling low quality hockey or saying people watch it cus it's funny is showin your either arrogant or just uneducated on European hockey. You have 3 teams coming from the 2nd best league in the world the KHL, than 2 from Swiss probably around or even better than AHL level and team Canada who I wouldn't expect to do so well this year with there roster but usually bring players with lots of NHL/AHL and CHL expierence. And even previous years you bring German and Czech teams it's still similar level of talent and is great hockey to watch. This all coming from a Canadian

Hedden plays for my team in the finnish Liiga and I must say there is probably only one forward in team Canada i would rather have than him on my team, so I dont really know why you used him as an example of poor quality. Every major league in Europe has better canadians than Gilliati and Walter though.

The thing is, this tournament isn't all about team canada as you guys seem to think. People in Europe aren't rooting for this team, so yeah, team canada is nothing close to spectacular, but the 5 other teams are actually pretty good. The level of hockey at the Spengler Cup is way better than the AHL, we saw how the american rochester struggled last year.. Anyway, the Spengler Cup is the most important tournament involving clubs, so if you don't care about it, then just don't watch it! Saying the quality of play is low means that you obviously have no idea what European hockey is.

I must admit Hedden is probably the only guy on the team I had zero knowledge on.

He's 30 years old with 0 NHL experience and his stats this year arent impressive.

I must say his aHL numbers looks okay and he seems to be a late blumer since he was in college until he was 25 years old.

We'll see in a few days what it looks like!!!

Btw Jérôme Samson was add to the line up so they have 15 forwards available so some competition to be in the line up.

Who is the one forward you prefer from Hedden on the team?

uh... even as a die hard Davos fan: no, not even close

It's the oldest invitational tournament, but that's about it.

That brings a certain importance with it. :) There are not too many reputable events with international competition in Europe, hopefully the CHL gets there one day. Means also that the value of the SC doesn't mean much because of the lack of alternatives.

People need to consider that this is an invitational Christmas holiday tournament. Swiss television likes to blow it's importance up IMO. Players go there to win of course but first of all they like to spend a nice week in the Alps with the team and their families. From what I know, especially Team Canada makes an event out of this. I get the impression they sometimes reward players that have been around for years yet never got much appreciation.
