would anyone be interested in Willie Mitchell if we moved Staal? though I expect him to re sign in LA.

Boyle is going to free-agency. He's not coming back here.

[QUOTE**Center Brian Boyle expressed that he would like to play a bigger role next season and will be seeking that opportunity as an unrestricted free agent after being told by Vigneault today that if he were to return he would remain in the same role as a fourth line player and a penalty killer][/QUOTE]

On the other hand, Dom Moore has never earned more than $1.2 million/yr and has proven over and over that he's a solid, versatile player . I'd be very surprised if he doesn't re-sign here for a very reasonable amount (and several years).

Kreider-Stepan-MSL
Nash-Brassard-Zuke
Hagelin-XXXX-XXXX
XXXX-XXXX-Dorsett

McDonagh-Girardi
Staal-XXXX/Klein
Moore-Klien/Diaz/McIlrath

Hank
Talbot

Bottom 6 is going to be interesting to sign. My RFAs are as this at AAV:

Kreider - 2.5 (Bridge)
Brassard - 4.5
Zuke - 4
J Moore - 1.7 (Bridge)

The bottom 6 has a slight make over. Cannot afford Boyle. Promoting Fast into the 4th line wing. He will PK and be responsible. I believe Slats can resign most of the team. Stralman and Boyle will be gone though. Richards is obvious at this point. My concern is the other C spot. Unless they feel JT Miller is ready, they will have to trade for a center. The UFA market is not good. There are some 3Cs there, but will be expensive, and unless you prioritize that over signing a guy like Pouliot or another 3rd line winger, be my guest. I would love Bolland, but he's going to go very high. Same with Ott, but cheaper than Bolland. Here is my roster:

Kreider-Stepan-MSL
Nash-Brassard-Zuke
Hagelin-XXXX-Pouliot (2)
Fast-Moore (1.7)-Dorsett

McDonagh-Girardi
Staal-Klein
Moore-Diaz/McIlrath
McIlrath/Diaz (1.2)

This gets the Rangers a hole at 3C, but have roughly 4 million in cap room with my numbers. I could see that as low as 3 million with players getting boosts over my number. A trade will have to happen for a 3C or a 2C or a 1C. Easier to trade for a 3C. Miller could be used as trade bait for that center. We hear Thornton, Spezza, and Kesler on the market. Don't see them on the roster. ROR would be the other big name. Can't see the Rangers having the pieces to get him nor the funds to sign him.

Big thing I could see is moving Staal to get that C and possibly signing a 2LD. He could net the team a big piece at center. I honestly feel J Moore is capable of 2LD minutes. Him and Klein work well and an increase in role isn't farfetched. Saw some say Pitkanen and Nikitin as options for 2LD. Could sign a 3LD as well. Plenty of options there if they feel Moore is ready.

I really don't think we should be messing with trading Staal. Especially if Stralman hits the market (which I don't think he will). He's a big reason we were able to match and shut down other teams top players. McDonagh can't be out there every shift against every line. Staal deserves more credit here IMO.

I think priority number one should be retaining our RFA's and buying out Richards.

Priority number two should be upgrading Stepan to O'Reilly or someone like *gasp* Spezza or Thornton. Hopefully the former rather than the latter. Or, if Sather can somehow work some magic, adding Stastny to the current center depth: Stastny, Stepan, Brassard, Moore would be great.

If I'm Sather, I'd be going very hard after ROR in Colorado. I'd even consider taking Parenteau's contract in a deal to get ROR here.

ie:

Stepan and Klein for Ryan O'Reilly and PA Parenteau. We'd be bringing in about 4 million more than we're sending out when all is said and done. If we could find a way to make it work, or send Parenteau to NYI for picks even, it'd be so worth it.

If we're not getting a 1c or 2c at a reasonable price without sacrificing to much depth then just let JT Miller play the 3c. There's no point in signing a free agent that will give u about the same point production just because they are older. Let JT play we already have experienced players on our team and live with his mistakes as he grow and develops into a quality player. We drafted JT to make a difference and now is his time. And if all goes well in 2-3 years time he will be good enough to see top six time. And then stepan will be getting near his prime. If only lundqvist was 5-8 yrs younger

I agree, if we can't trade for a top C.. I wouldn't be opposed to bringing almost everyone back.

Trading stepan for centers is Pejorative Slured... We need center depth stepan is a good low 1c and he's young and he's homegrown talent trading him would be stupid

I wouldn't do that. It'd destabilize the 3rd pairing and also give away our first line center to a team that's already boasting very good C depth. Kind of a lateral move, and we still have the problem of 2C if the 3rd is Pouliot, Brass, and Zuccs.

ROR has been playing Duchene's wing. If anything, I figure they'd want a scoring winger over another C. If ROR is moved for a d-man, than Stastny is almost assuredly resigned, I figure.

If we could build something around Nash and ROR, I'd be extremely happy.

Nash + Klein for ROR + rights to Stefan Elliot?

I agree that trading Stepan for a center isn't really productive.. If we're gonna trade a center (in a deal for another one).. it would be Brassard IMO (and he's really grown on me), because Stepan is more of a #2C than Brassard is no question. Stepan as the 2c on this team would be really valuable.

Agreed 100%

If we get ROR and give him the $6 mill he wants beware of Stephan's upcoming contract situation they both put up similar point totals...

Traded Staal (with prospects or picks, or straight up) in a deal for RoR.

This might be just me, but I would not give Brassard more than Zucc.. Zucc makes that line go.

I believe the plan is to spend 9 million on those two. Say 4.5 each, fair enough?

Brass got some more NHL experience, Zucc got more points.

The Rangers have 5 picks in the draft next week.

1st rounder went to TB

5th rounder went to SJ in the Clowe trade

The Rangers have the Panthers 5th. Casey Wellman trade.

Looks like the Mashinter trade is finally complete. Mashinter for Tommy Grant and a conditional round pick in 2014. Looks the Sharks have the Rangers 6th round pick.

6th round – 171st (own pick) and 179th (New York Rangers in Brandon Mashinter trade).

i am personally of the belief that this is the lineup we will see next year. just based on the fact the Hagelin, Stepan, Staal, and msl will need extensions after next year and this allows us to prepare for that impending spending. as much as id like a staal for ROR trade i doubt it would happen because of staals tenure in the organization and because he is the best 2nd pairing shut down guy in the league in my mind. i wasnt sure how to deal with the d pairs..

1) BUY OUT Brad Richards

2) TRADE Stepan and Klein for Ryan O'Reilly (sign ROR 6 years @ 6.5)

3) TRADE Nash for Spezza

O'Reilly Spezza St. Louis
Kreider Brassard Zuccarello
Hagelin Ott* Pouliot
Carcillo Moore Dorsett

O'Reilly excels at both C and LW. Hell, I'm sure he'd be effective at RW too. That adds more versatility and flexibility within the lineup. You can go Spezza-O'Reilly-Brassard-Moore down the middle, or you can add someone like Ott/Roy/Legwand and go Spezza-Brassard-3C-Moore with a stacked top-line of ROR, Spezza, and either MSL, Zucc, or Kreider.

* The 3rd line C spot can be won by [JT Miller or Oscar Lindberg] or it can be filled by UFA signing of Derek Roy, David Legwand, or Steve Ott. Legwand and Ott are above average at faceoffs (not sure about Roy). They could do provide stability, faceoff prowess, and limited offensive contribution the way Jarrett Stoll does for LA. It all depends on their asking prices, and whether or not any of them would consider taking less than market value to be a part of a contender in NYC.

And despite a strong overall performance in his first year in NY, Benoit Pouliot's spot on the 3W shouldn't be totally set in stone and could be won by any of the young forwards that will be in camp this year: Kristo, Haggerty, Fast, etc.

Look at the Kings model. Speed, Size, and Center depth. (Yeah and ridiculous goaltending, but we're already set there) Losing Stepan, Richards, and Nash and bringing in O'Reilly, Spezza, and Ott/Roy/Legwand (or even if J.T. Miller earns the spot) is a huge improvement in both size, speed, and grit down the middle.

I would still make the Staal/RoR trade (or Staal for another center) anyday.. The real problem of this team is in the center position.

so would i but i think we wont unless its a straight up or some sort of staal + a late pick and it creates a big gap in talent between Mcdonagh and J Moore unless ur expecting a big growth from him or allen this summer. but u can sign a stop gap because...

The real problem is that the cap is unlikely to be as high as Cap Geek suggests meaning that several of the rosters (12 forwards, 7 defenseman) will not be cap-compliant, never mind carrying an extra forward.

My guess is that the cap will be around $69.5 mil or $70 mil. Not much more than that. If what I read earlier was right, the projections in revenue were not accurate, therefore the $71+ that Cap Geek suggests in unlikely to be the actual number.

Buying out Richards is pretty much a given at this point.

Acquiring ROR for Staal would be a problem. As far as I can see, none of our prospects are ready for top-4 minutes, and we need only revisit the 11-12 playoffs to see what a short bench of dependable d-men can do, never mind the cap implications. If Staal is getting moved, there will likely be a need for a veteran backup if none of the prospects pan out.
