He can play both which makes him more attractive, but he's plays mostly RD in his career.

That's what I thought as well but people were saying left in the last thread, and I am glad I am not crazy.

It would be wonderful however, if they could sign both he and Stralman, trade Staal, and keep him on the LD with Stralman. Damn that would be a nice pairing.

Probably just better to hope they sign one of Ehrhoff or Stralman at this point. Ehrhoff does have the offensive element the Rangers need so he is better option.

Just have to reach out to Ehrhoff's camp. Could he be had for roughly 5, I'm all for him. Staal is set to make at least 6m next summer. While I love his game, is it really the best thing to lock him up to big numbers? We need a offensive punch from the blueline somewhere and that's a difficult need to resolve when you have almost 15m invested in Girardi, Staal, Klein and Moore (ok maybe some will come out him), 20 with Strålman who all provide very little offense and no prospect to make any impact the upcoming years.

Like you have said Ehrhoff and Stralman could be an awesome second pairing and Staal is obviously a very nice trade bait to get some young gun upfront.

I like the prospect of adding Ehrhoff, even though it doesn't address the need for another RH shot on the PP. However, he's probably at worst the 2nd best FA defender on the market now. He's going to get paid, and I can't see how we could afford it. You'd really have to count on him wanting a front-loaded deal from a team that is going to contend for a cup.

No, the pairing was Ehrhoff - Ristolainen for the last part of the season?

Have to remember that Buffalo has an abundance of young, righty RD coming through their system. Ristolainen, Ruhwedel, Myers, Pysyk. Plus Sulzer and McBain if you want to add them. Having a player like Ehrhoff, a lefty typically playing on the right and who can play both, inevitably meant that he'd be the player to switch it up.

I'd be curious to see if Ehrhoff can return to 40-50 point form on a better team or if he's past his offensive peak. If he can, I'd rather have Staal-Ehrhoff than Ehrhoff-Stralman or Staal-Stralman.

Ehrhoff had his best seasons under AV in Vancouver so I'd say it's a decent possibility that he could put up those numbers again here.

Can people be realistic please, we are not trading staal and we are not signing erhoff besides he is left handed and AV likes righties on the right

Surprising Buffalo couldn't move Ehrhoff's contract. It had 7 years left w/ an AAV of 4 million, but only the following real money left:

- 4 million
- 4 million
- 4 million
- 3 million
- 1 million
- 1 million
- 1 million

Christian Ehrhoff will get more as a FA. The only explanation I can think of he refused to waive his NMC forcing Buffalo's hand in buyout (which would be a shrewd and extremely fortuitous decision by CE). Or Buffalo is just afraid of the recapture penalty and is paying a heavy financial price to insure against that situation.

Ehrhoff is 23-25 min a game defenseman and that goes back all the way to his time with Vancouver. He's a lefty that plays his off side to rip one timers. He knows AV's system, and has been a solid presence in the Eastern Conference. The Rangers defense has been built about collapsing in front to protect Lundqvist and just constant chips off the boards and limited skilled passes for a nice breakout. Plus outside of McDonagh no defenseman on this team will give us more than 25 points and the only one that is close to that number year over year is Girardi.

In the 2010-2011 season Staal and Girardi has 29 and 31 points. Obviously with Staal and his health its tough to criticize his production. Both were part of our #1 tandem and shutting down opposing top lines. I say they get put back together. One it'll lessen Girardi's minutes which for his style of game would be a huge benefit and lessen's the stress of needing an offensive game from him. Plus you can send out this tandem for just that a strict shutdown presence against any offensive line from Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin, Datsyuk, Kessel, or Tavares.

This would leave a great skating, offensive, mobile tandem of McDonagh and Ehrhoff to handle smooth breakouts for our top offensive line, guys that can get pucks to the net and help sustain an offensive presence. Don't forget in 2010-2011 season where Vancouver was #1 with 117 points their most played defenseman was Ehrhoff at like 24-25 mins a game.

McD - Ehrhoff
Staal - Girardi
Moore - Klein

They couldn't move him for the same reason the Rangers could not move Brad Richards.

Edit: Yeah the last part of your post.

If Erhoff is cheaper than Stralman, I think he fits what the team is needing more than Anton.

That said, you can also move Staal for a talented ELC forward like Yakupov and sign both Stralman and Erhoff. Though we'd probably be cutting it close and wouldn't be able to bring back Pouliot.

I really doubt he'll be cheaper than Stralman.

Depends on what effect his $850k per year he's getting on the buyout will have on his target in negotiation. I'm not sure he'll be cheaper than Stralman even if he does take it into account. On the other hand, he hasn't exactly had a great 3 seasons in Buffalo. Where Stralman's value is absolutely inflated by the opportunity he had in the SCF run, Ehrhoff's might be somewhat deflated at the moment.

I don't think his buy-out will have any effect. Lecavalier still got a 22.5M contract after his 33M buy-out.

I went into this offseason expecting to retain Stralman, Pouliot, and Moore on reasonable contracts. Now, we're going to lose everyone. And, we're going to replace them with subpar players.

This is turning into a nightmare. Can't blame them for wanting to get paid, though. All three of them have legitimate reasons to take the most money they can get.

Kreider / Stepan / Nash
Hagelin / Miller / St. Louis
x / Brassard / Zuccarello
Carcillo / Moore / Fast

McDonagh / Girardi
Ehrhoff / Strålman
Moore / Klein

Lundqvist
Talbot

Leaves about 3.5M left to fill x, 13th forward and 7th d-man.

Sign Skille for 4th line RW.

Plug Duclair in on the LW, make Carcillo the 13th F.

Sign Diaz to be the 7th D.

Looks good.
