Boyle makes some sense if Stralman has either priced himself out or won't re-sign. Short contract. PP QB. Slow-footed but has a lot of smarts similar to Andrei Markov.
Not anywhere close to my top choice but there are worse players out there.

I hope Glen called to say we want no part of Stastny. The thought of his price tag gives me nightmares.

let me first sa that I like the idea of Stastny here in NY.
But I think if you are expecting him to come in and get back to the 70 point plateau you are going to be disappointed.
He's had better talent the last 2 years than his last 70 point season when he had Chris Stewart on his flank.
I think having a guy liks Stastny that is an improvement on Richards in just about every facet of the game is worth bringing him here, but lets not as fane do what we always do to these UFA signings, which is heap unrealistic expectations on them.
We get Stastny at 6x6.9 and he gives us 3 60+ point seasons, that's a win.
Expecting something from him that he has not done in 5+ seasons is not fair to him.
Personally, I'd like to trade Klein for a 2nd and sign Boyle to be on the 3rd pairing.
Limit his role. 8-10 minutes a game 5 v 5. 4-6 minutes on the powerplay. Optimize his skills.
After that, I'm hopeful we can keep everyone else consistent on this team, minus someone like Dorsett in place of someone like Winnik.

there is the key. Richards was one PP QB, and for all his faults, over the course of the season was one of the better ones. At the end of the day, the PP failed, and a couple conversions in the SCFs could've made that series a bit more interesting, especially an OT PP goal. That could be a focus of Sather, but if a guy like Boyle comes, I'd think Stralman gets priced out. Just thinking about the numbers, which I don't know all too well, off the top of my head. Maybe they get a sense in these days, and if the sense is bad, they go hard at Stralman.Unless Klein is moved and Boyle comes at a similar cost. I don't know. Just throwing it out there.
I really like Klein's game. He is on a very good contract. I'd prefer to keep him.

I've been torched many times before. To answer your question... those same people will probably criticize me, as well.
You're not alone. In regards to Boyle, I think it would be an incredibly under the radar and useful move (to put him in that type of position).
The problem with Dan Boyle is he's probably looking for a decently hefty contract considering his age and abilities. Do you want to pay him $5 mill or so to play 10 even strength minutes per game?

Actually I think you'd be better off letting Klein take Stralman's spot then putting Boyle on the 3rd pairing. GREAT stopgap to allow McIlrath to manuever his way onto the roster... much better than tying up $ into Stralman if that is the case.
This is, of course, dependent on how ready McIlrath is.

Boyle increases that total to 100 + McDonagh's 45-50? Gets us right around the 150 mark that AV was used to in Vancouver.
I wanted 3 moves to be made. Boyle in for Klein. Winnik in for Dorsett. Maximize Staal's value now.
I'd settle for just the first two and be happy with this offseason. All 3 would be the perfect offseason for me.
I don't want too much meddling. But I want improvements, as well.
Boyle's 25 points over Klein are extremely helpful.
Winnik's size will help us.
Maximizing Staal's value shouldn't have the detrimental effects some people say it could have, and would be a move to help us now and for the future.
That's what I want. That's what I'm hoping for.

stasny and boyle. if slats is kicking the tires good on him. both those guys make us better right way.
this is the new nyr's. we are in win now mode. we are in one player away mode. we have a window and slats may well be going for it. we laughed at our team earlier last season that we were in tear it down mode but a trip to the scf's changed that. we are a dangerous team. we need to get better.
hanks got 3-4 more top end years. msl is 38. we were in the scf last season. we are close. the core is there. add a few players and we make a serious bid to run the table.
if we add a stasny in the middle and a dan boyle to run the pp, we are a way better offensive team. both those guys address needs and both cost only money. slats doesnt want to move kids to get better. hell swap roster players to get better though.
if it means not reupping on stralman-bad move, moving brass, letting boyle walk and keeping staal. good. keep the core together.
im preparing myself for some serious moves from slats soon. he smells cup. he may well be going for it next season.

I think the trade off for Boyle would be getting a substantial amount of money, albeit less than a bottom-feeder team to play in a great city for a contender.
At this stage in his career, I think he can afford to let go of about 2-2.5 mill in place of playing for a team that allows him to hoist the cup one more time before he hangs his skates up.

I mean this is the least snarky way possible, but how much do you think they'll sign him for that it'll be worthwhile to play him so little? The guy is a vet who has put up big numbers from the back end. I can't imagine him going cheap.

I don't put much stock into teh idea that the PP was better this year with Richards on the point.
I think the PP would have been improved based on the fact that we now had someone dedicated to addressing it as a concern where as Torts tolerated it.
Richards was still thinking the position to much for my liking.
I much rather perfer a player come in here and instinctually run the PP. And while Dan Boyle MAY have been that guy at one time, I think as players get older then tend to think the game more than play it and having a 37 year old Boyle here now would leave us with no better a PP than last year. No improvement and we get older.
I can see him getting 2 years 10 million from someone like the Panthers. A tradeoff for playing for a better team would be 1 year 5 million or even 2 years 8 million.
He's made a lot of money over his career. He's not a guy who's looking to provide for his family, any longer. He's a guy at the last stages of his career who will likely value success over pay check.
I'm not saying he'll take scrub money, but a discount of 2-2.5 mill over the course of 2 years isn't out of the picture, at all.

The thing is, the best team on paper doesn't necessarily win.
I'd way rather keep what we know works than try to exchange it for something that might work better, or might fail miserably.

I think that McIlrath could conceivably be ready at any point during the season.
Just adding the right handed shot in over Girardi and Richards will be a boost, in and of itself.

I personally don't like the idea of moving Klein, who can be a serviceable 2/3 pairing guy for the foreseeable future, in order to get an equally expensive guy who will likely be useless in a year or two, and who will definitely have to be sheltered 5v5, and who doesn't have good foot speed, which is the hallmark of this team going forward.
