If we don't resign Stalman AND trade Staal. What did you think I meant?

Clearly trading Staal is contingent on retaining Stralman, IMO.

I don't think you can feasibly keep both, especially Staal, who will try and command 6 million for a 2nd pairing defender.

Just wondering.. when the Rangers made the Gaborik trade, didn't they want J Moore because they thought he would become a top 4 dman?

he was a first round pick. hes 6'3 and skates beautifully. hes got the ability to be a very good offensive dman.

we saw what kind of shot he has- low and hard and we also saw a player who carrys the mail, plays the pp point and can move the puck out effortlessly.

defensively he suffers from the same thing staal and girardi suffer from. he gets boxed in occasionally. he makes dumb reads and scrambles around more than he should.

guess what? hes 23.

as i said before, hes got a chance to be very good and i see him, and i believe av and his staff see him, improving steadily.

If they sign Stastny, I'll be right there with you on the complain train (:naughty:).

But neglecting to even admit that it's actually feasibly possible? You're just setting yourself up for a very deflating low.

Anything is possible, can happen, etc. That I will not deny.

However, is it a likely scenario? Again, unless management is absolutely dumb **** window licker status, I'd say no.

I'm more worried about our defense missing Staal, Stralman, or both, than I am about our center position missing Richards.

Apparently a lot of people disagree.

Didn't you guys read all the press about how badly GMs wanted proven top 4 defensemen at the deadline but simply couldn't get one? They are in short supply. We'd do well to keep those that we have, and look to fix the center position at the deadline, if it even needs to be.

LA Kings had one of the worst regular season offenses and power plays of the playoff teams.

I think that is how you can sell him. My personal opinion on his play is that he's solid, and could be a very adequate 1st line pairing defender for a team with the space to put him there. I also think he'll look better on a more defensive minded team that isn't about transition hockey and defensive pinch ins that spotlight mobile defenders that can move quickly north-south.

I also think his last name will bear a higher package in return.

As for my opinion on Allen, it's a hope, not a fact. You could be right on him. I could be wrong. He may not be able to handle the 2nd line duties. But from what i saw in Hfd, and the game he had up here, he was calm, composed, limits his mistakes, has really good positioning, is mobile, a big body, and will provide similar offensive output to Staal.

I think with a defensively responsible partner like Stralman or Klein, he'll blossom into a very important depth player for us. And most importantly, he won't be making anywhere near 6 million...ever.

the guy you describe in paragraph one seems like a perfect fit for the Rangers. I'll keep him!

Why is it impossible for Rangers fans to overvalue or even fairly value our players? Yet teams like the Senators and Canucks ask for similar packages for players that are worse.

I'm not saying Staal couldn't get that package, I'm asking what team will give it to us. The kind of player you are looking for, teams are reluctant to give them up, regardless of how much Staal is worth.

If you think it's a good idea then back it up. Tell us what player(s) you would target in a trade for Staal.

I'm sure what management sees is a successful team whose success is predicated on balance and even talent distribution.

I think the easiest fix is throwing a bunch of money into several duffle bags and taking a trip to the Stastny's household.

Note, "easiest".

That's why I think it's more probable than is being let on. This is the easiest fix they can do for the position.

Not to mention ODC's point that while the defense was solid, Hank's superb play 1) needs better offense to actually get him wins and 2) should probably spark an argument debating if we can afford to let go of some of our defense in place of offense if he's capable of playing this way.

I mentioned it in the BRB post.

Granlund from Minn.
ROR from Colorado.
Mantha from Det.

I agree. I'd love to keep the top four as is, although that may not be realistic. I believe that, along with Hank, are main reasons why this team was able to stay in games. I recognize the offensive deficiencies, part of which I attribute to running out of gas as well as the type of players up front, but there needs to be a balance and having top defense and goaltending is never a bad thing when trying to win games consistetnly.

last years defense was very good.

we are fortunate we are deep. moore and klein can play more minutes. conor allen looks ready.

staal or stralman ?? we can survive without one of them. staal brings us back a nice prospect/pick/young player. if we move stealman we have cap space to play with.

no way we move both of them.

unless and until we improve our center position, and that includes the pp as well, we will struggle to score goals and that plan hasnt worked in the recent past.

are you a glass half full or empty guy ? we made the scf or we barely got bye pitts and montreal.

score more goals. thats my 2015 season mantra.

SCORE MORE GOALS.

AGAIN.. I'm not saying I would sign Stastny... I'm just saying unlike what many people think on here.. its feasible (at least for this year).. Where it comes into play is next year when we have to sign Stepan/MSL/Hags/Staal (unless he's traded). MSL might sign for the same cap hit (maybe less?), but Stepan and Hags will surely get a raise.

anyway, just for fun...

Besides Doughty/McDonagh... on paper, we looked to have a much more dominant defensive corps than they did.

Their defense looked better. Their offense kept our defense pinned. And our offense couldn't do **** to their "worse" defense.

I think you resign Stralman and then you have an entire summer to move Staal.

What are the Rangers getting for Staal at the deadline? Another Callahan deal where they add two picks to get something of value? The Rangers are out of picks. If Rangers determine they can't or don't want to pay Staal and if they can keep Stralman, trade Staal in the next few weeks. The price to keep Staal isn't going down. Staal suffers another injury. The Rangers won't be able to get much in return and they would be more leery in paying him. Maybe give teams a window to sign Staal as part of the trade so he isn't a rental player. The Rangers get those assets into their organization this summer. A trade would need to be completed before talking to Staal's agent. The Rangers have the parameters of what Staal wants and the acquiring team would know before entering into contact talks. The Rangers would know what they need to do to replace Staal. During the season it's the same old argument about the Rangers better off keeping and losing the player in free agency.

I dont know what gives anyone the impression that Connor Allen is "ready"

I've gotten the luxury of watching more games of him than most.

-Limits mistakes
-Good positioning
-Extremely mobile
-Excellent transition passing ability
-Decent shot, doesn't use it often
-Physical for his size

He's as impressive of a prospect as we have. He's not flashy, but i'm not worried about that.

He really will be someone very important to our depth for years to come.

Thank you.

I like Moore and Allen too.

But I like neither of them enough to hand them a top 4 position right off the bat.

Frankly, a bigger concern for this team is that we have no big shot on the power play now.

Brad Richards had 51 points last year, but 19 of those were on the PP.

That's 32 ES points, from a guy who was #1 among our forwards in even strength TOI/game

Richards scored about 1 ES point for every 40 minutes of ES TOI. Playing with top 9 guys.

Dominic Moore had 15 ES points in half of the average ES time with 4th liners. He scored almost at the same rate of ES points per minute playing with Boyle and Dorsett that Richards did playing with Callahan, Hagelin, ect.
