Speculation: 2014 Offseason - Roster Building / Trade Speculation Thread III

Question is.. Klein was also very solid (and played top 4 minutes in Nashville) and he's signed for 2.9M for 4 more years, do we value Stralman 1M more per year (4 on the lowside of what he will get IMO), or can we use that somewhere else, promote Klein to play with Staal (who can't play with Staal?)..
 
As I said a few pages back, I'd consider Peter Mueller. He's played C, he has experience, yet is still young enough for the core (26), and is coming off a season spent in Europe where he was a PPG player. He said he wants to return to the NHL. Yes, he's had concussion issues, but he's been playing and seems to be doing well.

Worst case scenario, it's not working and Miller takes his spot. The only thing we'd be giving up is cap, and he's not in a position to demand a ton. I'd run the Mueller and Brass lines like a 2A/2B. It's a gamble, but, hey...we've done this before (see Stralman).

He's also an option to QB the PP.

Kreider - Stepan - Nash
Pouliot - Brassard - Zuccs
Hagelin - Mueller - MSL
Lindberg - Moore - Dorsett

McDonagh - Girardi
Staal - Stralman
More - Klein

Promoting Klein to play with Staal will likely catapult Moore's play back down to how he was playing with Del Zotto. By all means, Klein was valuable because he was able to get the most out of Moore.

A big problem that we have is a lack of size on our forwards. A guy like Mantha, 6'4, who can probably add a good 20 pounds and get to be around 210, could be a real steal. I don't think he'll be a 40-50 goal scorer, but 30+? Absolutely. Him and Kreider on the LW would be incredibly problematic.

I think you can live with Brassard as your 2c *gulp* if you supplement the other open positions with as much talent as you can.

My point is to trade Staal when his value is his highest. Get the most you can get. Don't fall into the same trap you fell into with Del Zotto, Gaborik, and Callahan. Don't let them depreciate to the point where you aren't trading for substantial pieces.

I'm not against trading Staal. For contractual reasons, it makes some sense. I'm just arguing your assertion that we can't have Miller as our 3C.

I've advocated that we should target players like Mantha, rather than players like ROR, Stastny, etc. Players that are on the cusp of breaking out in the NHL or on the cusp of making the NHL and have high potential. We need more good players on cheap contracts. But every team can use players like that. It's tough to get the ones that everyone thinks it going to be a great player.

First and foremost, we have to make a decision on Stralman. If we want him back, get it done now, then deal with Staal.

I agree, which is why Granlund is another guy I'd love to look at.

Maybe he's not available. I wouldn't be surprised if they're looking to add more offense than defense, considering they have Sutter... as yo said.

But somewhere, around the league, you'll be able to get this type of value for Staal.

As for Stralman, resigning him is a prerequisite to any Staal trade.

If Stralman signs for, ex, 4 mill... and Staal signs for 6... That's nearly the same amount as our 1st pairing of Girardi @ 5.5 and McD @ 4.8. 300k off. That should not be that close.
 
I'm not sure what the ask is, but what about Kyle Brodziak for one year as a stopgap? $2.833m in salary. Granlund's development really hurt his ice time, but I think he's probably good for 30-40 points next year in the right situation.
 
Umberger and a 4th to Philly for Hartnell. Shorter contract for Umberger. He played well there but was moved to Columbus in 2008.

IMO it is less about replacing Richards production than it is about our team is getting weaker down the middle, which is a key area for controlling possession and driving the wingers production.

We are not only losing Richard's production but also losing the offense he generated at times with his linemates. Even though Richards is far from irreplaceable his linemates production will also suffer if Miller or Lindberg step into that position.

I'm not so comfortable going into a season where our quality at center ice is so weak in comparison to other playoff teams.
 
There is a NHL board of governors meeting on Thursday in Philadelphia. The upper limit could be announced on that day.

I'd rather have Miller than Brodziak at that cap hit.
