Didn't the gm there **** something up big in regards to buff versteeg and someone else?
That I believe played a Huge role in those moves.

i dont think the Rangers coming off a trip to the SCF is a factor, nor should it ever be. jsut because the rangers got that far doesnt mean you look at any trade within the aspect of, will this move help us get over the hump.
i think you look at all trades the same way. is it a good trade. does it help you now, and in the future?
Trading Staal & Zucc, within the confines of that 1 move, would arguably make the team loaded going forward without decimating it this year. at least thats my take and im sticking with it.

Tallon didn't get the QOs in on time, so several players became UFA. He had to overpay them to get them signed before other teams could get involved.

lets also remember that the Rangers are going to need to re-sign Stepan, Hagelin, and MSL next offseason. you can figure they will add at least 4 mil to their cap just with those resignings alone.

The whole getting a very good player in return for Staal package is probably somewhat contingent on the team's chances of being able to resign Staal.
Places like Minnesota, Colorado, and Detroit are very appealing places for hockey players.
Edmonton? I'd imagine Staal and his agent would be

Still not seeing Minnesota make a move like Granlund for Staal.
Perhaps not, but one or more of those 4 players that I listed is certainly going to be available.

We'll see how long St. Louis wants to play and what he looks like next year. I would not be shocked to see him drop off in production. He just turned 39.
I know I am going to be a minority here but I see a real possibility that Dan Boyle is a Ranger next year. This happens if a) Stralman walks and Klein gets bumped up to second pairing, b) Stralman signs and Klein gets flipped for choices at the draft. Klein's contract is too rich for a 3rd pair stay at home defenseman. WSould be perfect for a team (Edmonton, Calgary, winnipeg) who can't get a player to sign a long term contract.
At this point in his career, Boyle would be well suited to playing 12-14 minutes a game and running the second power play unit with John Moore. Short term deal of course. I saw enough of Boyle this year to be very comfortable with him in a reduced role.
Really like Winnik a lot. Thinks he makes sense as 4th liner and penalty killer. Adds some grit. Only reason he is getting squeezed in Anaheim is because they are so deep.

I would imagine they will during the offseason. I dont know if step does, but wasnt St.Louis skating with rangers players last offseason? I dont think it was at the rangers facility but i thought i remember reading that somewhere

Stralman.
Like BRB was saying in one of his posts, defense has always been our strength. Id rather stick with that than sacrifice for a forward.

Who do you get to replace either one? Miller vs ?
If they keep Stralman are they able to move another defender for offensive help? If they sign Grabovksi, are they able to trade a young forward maybe for defensive help?
I happen to think that Klein could do an admirable job filling some of Stralman's minutes on the PK and maybe Allen can take some PP time away from Girardi helping distribute some of his time as well. I'm a bit concerned on who will be taking Richards minutes...
I'm with you here. I'm more worried about who will fill Richards minutes more than the points
Stralman. I think Grabovski stinks and will get massively overpaid due to being the 2nd best UFA center on the market.
If the Rangers sign Stralman and then extend Staal, thats alot of money tied up in a top 4 defense that doesn't provide a lot of offense at all. And theres no money to really improve the forwards.
That said, I'd really like to avoid tearing down the defense core.

Jagr's still good, but even as the focal point of New Jersey's offense he's not scoring at a point per game pace anymore. St. Louis could put up 70 or 80 points next year, but what do you do if he puts up 50 or so? We have a lot of of money tied up on the wings and we're going to have a lot of kids looking for wing spots after next season.
I want him to do well, but I do want to see what he does before penciling in a $5 million cap hit for another two or three years.
I don't think any talks about extending him happen until late in the season. I agree. While he seemed to have something left in the tank at the end of last season, there is a point where age begins to start showing. I think MSL has a couple years left in the league, but can't say at what level he will be playing when he finishes, and perhaps the offer price is less than his current pay. We will see. Way to early to discuss, I hope.

I see absolutely no reason why Stralman can't be switched with Girardi on the powerplay. He came into the league as a purely offensive defenseman. He's quicker than G, has better hands, a better shot, and makes better passes. I think he has the ability to pick up some of the slack that needs to be replaced because of the Richards buyout.
I'm also really curious how Ryan Haggerty and Chris McCarthy look going into next season. I'm not expecting them to make the team, but they should put up a good fight for a spot.
