Could Staal return Hertl in a trade? Perhaps Couture if the Rangers added? Pavelski is 3rd choice and I think everyone is against adding Thornton.

In an attempt to remain snark-free, Couture is the one center that SJ is not willing to part with, and rather, is someone they wish to build around.

I absolutely agree that Staal will command more than he may be worth and more than we can afford in his next contract. In addition I believe his value will never be higher. It seems now is the time to turn him into assets that will help us progress onto the next level and/or into the future. My question is do you think trading Staal for example to a team like Edmonton for the 3rd overall is something that would work for both teams. Or are we in too much of a win now mode. Not exclusively but historically high picks like this have the ability to step right in and help out. Don't get me wrong, I love Staal but we end up losing out if we wait too long and he seems to be our only real trade chip with any value.

Rather include Staal in a potential ROR trade, or maybe for a Kadri-Gardiner package.

Just speculating on timing here, but I'm guessing we don't see anything other than maybe, MAYBE one or two re-signings prior to the draft. The proximity of the participants and the dynamic nature of players being available - and then gone - tends to instigate activity. There's really no reason for GMs to do anything other than discuss basic parameters until they get there and the names start to get called.

It's going to be a loooooooooong week.

I somehow highly doubt he holds very little value.

Even though he's 35, he's still one of the top 3 passers in the league. And NYR aren't the only team looking for a good center.

If there is any truth to the rumor that his preferred destination is MSG, then it may not matter if other teams are looking for a good center.

The window opens to talk to other teams on the 25th. I'd hope the Rangers lock up a couple of guys before then.

Bern, I'm not discounting the value of Siemens. The kid is a good prospect. What I'm saying is the Rangers are trying to win the Stanley Cup next year, not acquire the Duncan Siemens's of the world.

But consider, my friend, respectfully I says this.

We need more and better quality assets.
A guy like Siemens could start as 3rd pair and bone crusher w/McIlrath, or dealt for other assets.

The idea is that he is a useful asset or a valued currency.
Currency that is likely to mature as early as this year or in the next year or 2.

We are better off overall, taking a small hit to get Siemens as a throw in now, and having him shortly, than to stand pat.

If ya want the fruit from the tree, ya gotta plant a seed.

The ROR love fest is bordering on ridiculous. I love how people had a problem paying Callahan $6MM per year but now ROR, who has done comparatively nothing is a guy people not only want to pay big money to, but also give up a big asset in Staal. ROR should come cheaper but he won't because Colorado doesn't "have" to move him and they probably won't trade him unless someone overpays. And BTW there's no guarantee he's hoping to become a markedly improved offensive player...see J. Staal and P. Prucha as 2 examples.

Thank you

EMPEROR ROR IS NOT ORR, HAS NO CLOTHES!!!

I can definitely see Nash waiving his NMC to be traded from a team that just made the SCF to play for the Islanders.

Definitely.

You're correct there, but he would have an inducement to play with Tavares, likely better C he gets under any other scenario. Can't hurt his personal totals.

Bern,

You are the wayward alchemist forever trying to turn lead in to gold and sell the gold you have for a pile of stone that may or may not contain a diamond.

Yeah then we just ease that lottery ticket right in to the top-RW spot, the PK, the PP and ask it to play against the toughest competition in the league.

The 'Cup is ours!

Instant Karma gonna git you
Instant Gratification will kill you.

Everytime I said plant a seed, he said kill it before it grows, he said kill it before it grows.

No.
Hertl is their version of Kreider, consider him worth more than Kreider.
He is a C as well as a W, and may have better scoring 'touch'.
But kreider is the bigger way faster beast, so would say no.

Staal does not cut it.
Needs to be a serious overpay.
Anyone wanna take a crack at it, be my guest, but don't see them moving him.
They wanna move out Thornton + get paid for it don't want us to send Nash.

Bern,

But is more likely to have that diamond than not.
Statistically, they are better prospects.
You are not weighting the risk of guys like Siemens, etc.

I don't see how "standing pat" and just signing a few of our own helps us improve on this past season. It just doesn't make sense to me. Either one way or another we do something. What's the definition if insanity.....?

Siemens is a project at this point. Why are we even trying to acquire him. His status as a top defensive prospect is long gone. Sure, it wouldn't be awful to get him in our system, especially with the way we raise D-Men. But he's not anyone we should be setting our entire focus on.

Bern would trade away the whole team for picks and prospects if he could.

Keeping a very good team together and hoping that the young developing players continue to develop.

Not that insane at all. Making huge moves would be insane. This team just proved that they need a little nudge.

If he wants out or if these two parties just don't agree, things could get kind of sketchy and the Avs may have to move him for whatever they can get (Not saying he has low value, but get high value, just not overpaid like a lot of people think if things keep going the way they are)

I'm not aware of why O'Reilly would want "out" of Denver. Does he have a problem with team mates, coaches, management?

I'm not dialed into this. Sorry again for my ignorance on the subject.
