#canadiens Marc Bergevin said he's ready to do a trade to have a better pick at the draft. #tvasports
Expand

What should we read into that?

That he's open to suggestions or that he shows he wants to improve. I don't think we'd hear this if there was actually something in the works. Bergevin loves to surprise people...;) Personnally, I hope that he's open to also drop from the 1st and get 2 2nds. Actually, it could also mean that this is what he's going to do if he's not succesful at having a better pick.

Something like "I thought it was Worth it to have a better pick in this year's draft yet, once it reached 25, Timmins and his group agrees that whether you pick 25 or 50, those prospects are kinda similar."

“We couldn’t believe he was still available when it was our turn to pick.”

The Queen Mother of draft clichés is all about blowing smoke up the behind of the player drafted and giving fans and media the impression the organization committed a heist of criminal proportions. We get it, GMs – all the other GMs are out of their minds for letting your newest player drop.

If he wants to trade up, who is he targeting? Sanheim is my guess. Wanted a big mobile defenceman last year in Morin but couldn't get it done.

Either way, if you plan to trade up, you must covet a specific player.

Let's play you have no choice game. Neither is not an answer. Goldobin or Ho-Sang?

I go with Goldobin. And frankly....rather easily choice for me. Goldobin has proven to be more a catalyst than Ho-Sang. And I see Goldobin has "easier" to teach a 2-way game than Ho-Sang based on his natural instincts. Mind you, I'm not in the Ho-Sang hate group. I think he will be a good 2nd round pick. But I even prefer Goldobin offensive package than Ho-Sang's....

ho sang...I remember a big thing about him and mcdavid playing together and both being called the future of hockey a few years back...I don't want goldobin...I fdont want a Russian...I just want a Canadian...and im not racist...im pissed off that people cant understand that I just feel like theres more of a chance at a Canadian becoming successful than other countries....we're the best at for a reason....half the nhl is Canadian for a reason.....I don't want to take a risk on some burmistrov of kovalchuk who may bolt bck to his own country at first chance....Russians have gained a reputation as being enigmatic and heartless....I know they aren't all that way...but the history isn't helping them...year after year I watch teams consisting of mostly all Canadians win the cup...that's what it takes....thtas what I want.

Sanheim would be a very good pick. I mean at that rate, thank god the draft wasn't in 1 month 'cause he would have passed Fleury..... But moving up to which degree? Top 5? Top 10? Just top 20? Somehow I see Ritchie as a possible target in the top 10. Larkin as a possible target in the top 20. Or Perlini. But if the idea is a d-man....unless they know that Dougherty will skyrocket in the rankings....I don't see why he'd move and not just stand still and get him. Unless....again...they know he will be gone. Dougherty is CLEARLY what the Habs should aim for and are surely looking for in a d-man.

Or try to get a 2nd....or hope that one of Collins, Thomas or Jacobs drops in the 3rd....but it shouldn't happen, at least not till it's our turn to talk. I think that in the 3rd, Timmins will pray that a guy like McLeod is still available. Though personnally, I would have McLeod clearly in the 2nd round. Unless he surprises me and goes with Vanier in the 3rd. Other targets at that spot could clearly be Siebnaler.

Goldobin for me, hands down. I really feel the bad rep he gets is mostly out of line and at least partly attributed to where he's from instead of what he does. On my viewings of the guy he seamed to compete just fine and the skill level is undeniable. Plus Timmins and co. would have a fair amount of field work already done on him since he played with Galchenyuk last year, so if he's got major character issues they'll be well aware of it.

Goldobin seems to be so far ahead (Vision) of the rest, he needs to hide it or give the plan away, while at the Prospect game it worked depending who was on the ice with him.:handclap:

I like how you want Ho Sang because of an article you can recall from a few years ago...

Goldobin's great, but so is Ho-Sang. Feels like the Athanasiou of this draft (won't fall as low since he had a much better draft year). Some team will pick him up in the late first or early 2nd and walk away with a solid NHLer.

There's nothing wrong with wanting Canadians on your hockey team...i'm a Canadian....I root for Canadians....I want to see Canadians succeed, I want to see Canadians winning the Stanley cup...how the hell is that wrong?...why do we have the Olympics if its wrong to cheer for the success of your own country.....im not rooting for us to get rid of anyone who isn't Canadian....I don't want us to ship alexei emelin out because hes Russian....I think emelin is an excellent player and I value that player.....a Canadian, and even an American I believe comes with greater likelihood at a promising NHL career because a) their not going to bolt to another league and b) they are more familiar with the style of game the nhl is going to be playing here.

look I hate Russia..i do....its just a rivalry hate...the same way we hate the bruins.....but if we get a Russian who's gonna be money for us sign me the **** up....the same with an American or any player from any country.....Im just saying unless their established...I want to put my money on a Canadian...I just trust that they'll give us what we need more.

Can I get your opinion on players from Sweden, or other Euro countries? I don't have the statistics, but I would say that the talent level of Swedes is at least comparable in the NHL to the talent level of American born players. They come from a country with a different "style of game", and while they are less susceptible to bolt back to their home country, it takes them equally as long to come over to North America from their home country.

I'm happy with whatever makes us win....I just think taking players more familiar with the NA game give you a better chance....if a swede plays a hard physical game with lots of heart, or has a lot of skill and goes out there and competes..i'll take him on my team any day of the week....I just feel the Canadian is the way to go and their are nhl GM's who feel the same. I like having Canadians on my team...I don't want us to close doors on other players because they are from a different country...I just like having Canadians...im proud to have Canadians...that's all I can really say....im not gonna turn my head in disgust if I see a Russian in the mall lol its just about hockey...its just this and no other aspect of my life....im not racist.

Bergevin says he's willing to trade up. What intrigues me is what asset he'd like to use to trade up, rather than who he'd pick with his new 1st rounder... In fact, both are equally interesting.

When I heard people talking about Ho-Sang natural instincts, I see him as a foward version of PK Subban. At the same age, people were saying that Subban would be a power play specialist, that he's not enough concerned about defense, that he's a wild gun, etc. Look at him now. Yes, there is some concern about Ho-Sang work ethic and attitude. BUT, PK and Josh share a strengh: Compete level. Ho-Sang may lack off ice work ethic, but like Subban, he hates to lose. And sometimes, when someone hate to lose, he do the thing to win. Just like Subban did. He learn to play defense. He learn when to attack when not to.

IMO, compete level is way more important than work ethic for a teenager. We all know that teenager are lasy. But some are winners. I think Ho-Sang is the kind of player who will do the thing he needs to do to win. Reports say that he change the way he play this year in order to win. He has the skill, the skating, the offensive awareness, the instinct and a high compete level. That's enough for a late 1st round pick. The kind of pick who will blossom.

Very interesting observation on Ho Sang. Thanks.

I'd be confortable with any of the risky high paying picks, whether Goldobin or Ho Sang. I don't see Sherbak as that risky and I'd be happy with him too if he falls on our lap.

Good post indeed. I have really nothing against him. We would pick him and while tons of people would be crying over it, I will be REALLY interested to see how he does and will follow him for sure. I see him and he reminds me of Athanasiou. Now, it's not that much of a great thing for me as I had him as a ND.....but he's about to make me eat some crow. So if he can do it, Ho-Sang might be even better. So have nothing against the kid. Just that I prefer Goldobin offensive instincts and his already overall game. In reality, it will probably be neither. But I'd have no problem with any of those 2.
