Is this guy better than Georgiev? As a Leafs fan I wouldn't mind trading for Georgiev if Shestyorkin beats him out for the backup job for the NYR

Shesterkin has the pedigree, but Georgiev is the one who has played at a high level for close to a full season worth of starts. We won't really know until Shesterkin debuts.

That said, one of the two may be gone before there's any competition.

I’d say yes. But there might be some pushback on that with the ‘goalies are voodoo and Georgiev has played/is playing in the NHL’ angle

It's worth noting that Georgiev was excellent for TPS for parts of three years before the Rangers signed him. I first noticed him checking out TPS games in his last year in Finland, and in terms of style and ability, he already looked then like a guy who could play NA hockey.

Of course, Shesty comes in with absolutely spectacular numbers in the KHL.

Yep, he did play well in Liiga, albeit in limited games. And you don't generally seem the same ridiculous goaltender stats in Liiga as you would in the KHL.

Going back all the way to 1975, only 12 goalies aged 21 or younger have had a higher sv% than Georgiev over the course of a season in Liiga (min 20 GP) and the lowest GAA out of all those goalies.

His last season there he finished with a .923 sv% and 1.70 GAA

I feel like 12 goalies 21 or younger is actually a fairly substantive number.

That's not a slight on Georgie, it's just not the most overwhelming figure I've seen for a league with a lot of veteran starters.

Varlamov was Semen Varlamov when he first came over. They transliterate the names all the time and sometimes it's necessary.

They way we transliterate Cyrillic into the basic Latin alphabet is different than how the Russians do it, or how the Brits do it or how the UN does it. And so on. There's something like 10 transliteration standards just for the romanization of Russian Cyrillic.

For instance... In Dutch Ovechkin is spelled Ovetsjkin.

As far as I know Yegor and Igor are two different names. I can't stand the name Yegor, if one of my Russian friends called me Yegor, I'd punch them, haha. In English it's pronounced Eegor, in Russian Eegar.

Different names for sure but close enough phonetically. Name Yegor sounds similar in both languages, the only difference being the pronunciation of the last "r".
