WC: 2014 Division IB • Apr. 20-26 • General Discussion (Mod warning post 453)

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
I said that it's a shame he chose to accept Swedish citizenship and to join their junior national team. I have never called him a Latvian. He WAS a Latvian a couple of years ago when his name first popped up among Latvian hockey fans.

He was Latvian few years ago but he's not anymore? That's even lamer

To me Tomljenovic is the biggest surprise of the turnament and he had some good shots to catch.
And also the croatian players really surprised me this game, namely EBEL trained Blagus but also from Cro league Miric, Ljubic and Brencun.
Again This is really first time i have seen this NT play with heart and as such a good team ever (we had also bad coaching staff before lol). I think GB victory gave them confidence and fire.
I really wish that Bornas slapshot had gone in in the last third, it was so good. He does make his teammates look better though.

Why are they Croats? Because they have funny names?

That's like saying any American or Canadian with an anglo-sounding name is British and should therefore play for us.

If they feel British I don´t have a problem with that.

50% of croats are living outside of croatia + Croatian diaspora is well organised.

I´m living in a 50.000 inhabitants city in germany and we have:

- a teacher from croatia, which teach kids in croatian grammar, history and geography(2h per week)

- sundays a croat priest at church

- a croatian culture club which organise:
*a folklore dancing group
*a festival every 2nd/3rd month

*we watch croatian soccer/handball NT together at clubhouse
*we play soccer tournaments against other cities.

If you're a German-born German citizen - of course. What do you mean?

I have both passports since I´m borned, like Martinovic.

If you ask me if I consider myself as a croat or german, I would answer croat.

Why? Kostovic is born is Split, Croatia. Speaks croatian, lives here and considers himself a croatian.
Same goes for Martinovic. The only difference is that he was born in Germany form parents that went there to work.

my friend was born in an airport in russia while waiting for a connecting flight back to than Yugoslavia. i think Namejs would consider him completely Russian than because where he was born lol (he actually does have a Russian passport lol)
But for real lets pls drop this, we had an overlong discussion at the beginning of this thread about this and conclusion is that its a complicated issue which nuances can separate from being right or wrong. How about we stay at that and comment the turnament.
Pretty pls with sugar on top?

This discussion is absolutely Pejorative Slured. If someone is qualified and is proud to pull on the jersey then fair play to them. I suspect that a lot of this is sour grapes and had Croatia lost both games we wouldn't be hearing as much about it. It is also well worth considering that due to the Balkan conflict and also shifting borders in the last century there are many, many Croats living elsewhere in Europe but with a strong Croation identity. Who the hell is anyone to begrudge them playing for their nation.

I'm British and I think it's great to see Croatia doing well. The more nations that can excel at hockey the better and I just hope that Britain can sort out act out and start moving in the same direction.

Not knowing Croatian history and yet calling political or economical emigrants from communist times as foreigners is simply insulting. Borders shifted here on daily basis.

There are some things you cant understand. Slavic people in general no matter where they are gravitate to and long for their home land (sorta like Irish i guess). Its something in the heart and mind(no matter how cliche it sounds). If you dont understand it you can call it what ever names you want because you just dont get it. ANd that is the truth.

we can discuss the NA player but lets make a seperate thread. as i said this is not the place or time for it and we already covered it in legth at the very beginning of this thread. As for the Cro NT there are not that many as it was said. plus some will soon retire, some will not come. There will never be an overwhelming amount of them.
So lets get back to the games and comment them.
I honestly think this game "pure" croatian players carried the game to victory. ANd it really was a beautiful and fast paced game to watch.

Players like Letang, Waugh or MacAulay here are considered naturalized citizens. But players like Sertich, Kostovic, Martinovic, Dekanich, Katic, Popovic, Prpic, Hecimovic are considered Croats.
I don't think anyone here considers them as a foreigners.

Exactly. Croatian diaspora is very strong and active and even without the hockey almost all of those players would still be eligible for our passport due to their ancestry.

Okay, all this stuff has been discussed like a month ago, silly me for bringing it up again. Everyone has their own opinions, let's just move on.

Guys, it's fine to discuss the rules about player eligibility, but only from a hockey point of view.

If more posts need to be deleted, their authors will get infracted.

Thanks.

SO any thoughts how the rankings might look like now in the end?
Me optimistic:
1. croatia
2. Poland
3./4. GB/Lithuania
5. Netherlands
6. Romania

Me realistic
1. Poland
2./3. GB/Croatia
4. Lithuania
5. Netherlands
6. Romania

Could all change after the Poland-Lithuania match but at the moment I can't see past:

1. Poland
2. Croatia
3. Lithuania
4. GB
5. Holland
6. Romania

Medal for Croatia would be like a dream. Romania seems to be weak this year with many important players missing and Poland seems to be the strongest team around.

The "considering yourself" a nationality is all a load of rubbish

You should only be allowed to play for the country where you learned hockey, if that's more than one, you're allowed to choose.

IIHF competition is meant to reflect the standard of play and development system of a nation, not which nations brought over the best Canadians and others, regardless of their heritage. That would be like sending Manchester United or Real Madrid to the world cup, it just becomes a club competition.

Many players from Europe go to Canada to play junior hockey there. Best of them get drafted and then play pro hockey in NHL or AHL.
Should they be considered Canadians and be banned from NT cause they learned hockey there and cause they play there?

Did you miss the part where I said you are allowed to choose? Many of these kids don't leave their home nations until they are teenagers.

Meh I don't think it was that bad, people are overreacting quite a bit over 1 loss lol

If Murphy doesn't let in a couple softies, maybe GB doesn't look completely deflated after the first period that they clearly dominated.

With the new 1A & 1B grouping, every game can be won or lost by either team. It'd be funny if GB won every game for the rest of the tournament.

To be honest, GB werent really solid. Biggest shocker to me was actually seeing how bad Murphy was. He's the #1 goalie EIHL (in terms of stats)
He must have one hell of a defense infront of him because the positioning, reading plays and overall movement was utter dreadful in every aspect.

Watched a few belfast games this season aswell and he didnt stand out.

Ben Bowns has a bright future infront of him atleast, he had nice positioning, quick reflexes and read plays rather well.

Yes, but player eligibility is clearly defined by IIHF.
Thats why Kostovic and Martinovic are playing for us, or why Mihaly, Bartalis and Hari are playing for Hungary, or why Tim Bozon opted for France and so on....
