Yep. Couture is a bum :sarcasm:

112 goals in 297 games in the regular season and 18 goals in 56 playoff games isn't exactly lighting the world on fire. He had 2 more goals than Atkinson this year, granted in 14 less games, but still...1 goal in the 7 game series against LA this year. Not impressed enough to trade for him. I want guys with heart, that turn it on in the playoffs and are hard to play against.

Ca, eventually we're going to need more than just heart. We're going to need skill, which Couture provides. 112 in 297 is a 31 goal per season pace, since when is that not something we need?

Logan Couture would be an amazing add if anyone can get him... I just don't know if we could ice a roster with Johansen, Couture, Jenner, and Murray all on the same team.

If Couture, Burns, or Pavelski became available we would need to make a jump. Not too high on Burns, but I know he's a great player. Couture is one of my favorite non-CBJ players in the league. He'd be a great add.

But yeah. Turning off the fanboy and looking at it realistically, there's no way they trade Couture or Pavelski.

JK wants guys who are fast, smart and have the hearts of lions. What was that word Bobby Ryan can't spell again?

Yeah, and how did that team do? If they were so dead set on getting guys with speed, then why did he sign Nathan Horton? He doesn't exactly have after burners.

I've seen some people suggest Iginla. Assuming it was based on a 1 year deal and offer him money to see if he takes it. If the only way he was willing to accept was on a multi year deal, would you want Jarmo to do it? Iginla is 36, can he keep it up for another couple of years? If his age catches up to him, paying him big dollars/high cap hit would suck. Lets say his demands were 3 years/$15 million.

As for not wanting Sharks players, I would take Pavelski or Vlasic.

He just put up 60 points for the Bruins. I've been goofing around with various cap geek scenarios and I could see him fitting for 2 yrs at (up to ) $8 mill per. 3 @15 I'd fly to him to get him to sign.

Not saying he is Jagr but the other JJ just had a pretty good year at 42 ( I think) and re-signed for next year. I think he could be a great fit at RW on the second line.

I'm not sure I would want any of the Sharks players, they are so terrible in the post season and carry such huge contracts.

So let's see, you want a guy who plays on a SC semi-finalist at least and is signed for 5-6 years at say 3.5 mill and has the heart of a lion. Should be easy pickings. :sarcasm:

Couture actually didn't have a very good playoffs, and folks are worried that he may be stagnating.

My first choices off the Sharks, if they do go for a shakeup, would be Pavelski and/or Marleau. (Yes, Marleau. Because he's a speedy 30-goal scoring LW. That's something we could use.) I think that, despite fan worries, Couture would still be way too expensive.

It sounds so simple and easy when you lay it out like that. ;)

if I recall Pavel Datsyuk kind of had bad playoffs until he didn't and played important roles in a couple of Cup wins. I'd take a stagnating Coture over a stagnating Jacket forward any day. Fans are reactionary. I mean the Sharks just made history.

Mmmaybe. At this point I'd prefer more experience to help with the youth, personally. We've got our own youngsters who can go through crazy growing pains. ;)

I agree. If we could add Couture, Pavs, or Marleau (in that order of preference for me) I believe that would give us the ideal addition to the top 6. Realistically, I doubt Marleau would waive for us and if either Couture of Pavs are available the price will include at least 1, if not more, assets we won't be able to part with at this stage of development (Murray for example). I love to think about acquiring a player like that, just discouraged by the reality of what it would take to actually do it.

But he doesn't exactly skate around with a piano on his back like Umberger or Boll. Nathan Horton will be just fine, he has played in and excelled in high level playoff hockey, which is as fast as it gets.

As for the Sharks discussion, I don't think Couture or Marleau will be available. While they would look good on our top line, I don't see it. I've been looking through CapGeek and if we make a trade, I'm not sure where it would come from. There are some top notch players that are either not available or wouldn't fit into our identity. One thing I've done in my mind is eliminate any team that is in our division and have been looking to the West for any trade possibilities. The only teams I really see shakeups coming are San Jose, St. Louis, Edmonton and maybe Phoenix and Calgary. Getting a Blue or Shark by trade is going to be extremely difficult.

Cooch would be amazing but no way they trade him or Pavelski - if anything, they turn the team fully over to those guys and get rid of Thorton, Marleau, Boyle, Niemi...

I like the idea, but would the Sens really feel like they are rebuilding again? They don't look too far off to me. Would they be willing to admit their mistake only one season in? I'd love Ryan, but IDK.

I think so - take a look at this roster.

http://www.capgeek.com/senators/

It's basically decision time on Ryan and Spezza - if they can't sign/extend both it makes the most sense to trade them. Their GM already came out and said he was disappointed in Spezza and they don't think they will extend him.

They have extremely poor forward and defensive depth and a their goaltending was a disaster last year.

Looking more and more like their playoff run last year (when Craig Anderson stood on his head) was a mirage. They still have some promising youngsters in Turris, Zibanejad, and Cowen, plus Karlsson but I don't think they are anywhere near contention. That said, they probably would prefer to extend Ryan anyway since he's only 27.

But if he doesn't want to stay there and doesn't agree to terms this summer they can't risk letting him walk in UFA after all they gave up for him.

Thornton-Full NTC
Marleau-Full NTC
Boyle-UFA, he's gone
Niemi-just 1 year left, trade definite possibility.

I know. You can trade players with full NTC. Just have to find a team they are willing to waive for and work with them on it.

I originally came on here to suggest Michael Grabner as another option. LW, blazing speed, thinks game well, 26... Then I saw he had a horrible year and his remaining two years are at $4MM and $5MM. Only 26 pts in 64 games.

A buy low candidate? He's scored 34 goals before and the Isles certainly didn't have the offensive juggernaut - Tavares or not. Could be an option but only if we moved some salary, in my opinion.

If we were to pursue a UFA I would want it to be Niskanen. At which point I would suggest trading Wiz for Grabner and signing Niskanen. Wiz played on the Island and claimed to love it there. Niskanen could fill the PP void from Wiz and he's 10X the skater.
