I feel the defense will be okay and the offense is FUBAR.

Yeah there are too many factors working against the forward corps. Brass and Zucc playing against better competition. Loss of Richards 50 points, and not being replaced. All of the UFAs being filled with downgrades outside of DBoyle.

This is going to be a transition year. Top 6 may be set but the bottom 6 needs to get figured out, and it takes time to guys to figure out their roles and then they have to actually live up to them.

Last year I said during training camp that the Rangers were the deepest they've ever been. This year its very much the opposite. The forward corps look relatively unproven in their roles outside of the top.

Kreider-Step-MSL
Nash-Brass-Zucc
Hagelin-Miller-Fast
Glass/Lombardi-Moore-Mueller

McD-G
Staal-Boyle
JMoore-Klein

Yes and no...

THe top 6 looks OK. I see no reason for Brassard, Zucc, Kreider, and Stepan to get better than they were last year. MSL will have a full season of production, and Nash will hopefully no longer be snakebitten.

Put a Vet into Fast's spot... I don't think he makes the team
Hagelin and D. Moore look fine... they are solid in their roles
No reason why Glass can't work well on the 4th line
Lombardi and Mueller are the wild cards here.

I think this is a pivotal year for us. We really need some of the younger guys to start stepping up and making impact (Miller, Fast, for example.) They need to start making the leap into the NHL.

With the way the projected lines have been looking, the younger guys need to start having a role or we may regress.

Also, with the Rangers supposedly talking to Ribeiro, it's not a surprise to see a signing like this quickly after Ribeiro went elsewhere.

That's kinda like looking at a used sports car and settling on a used mini-van. He's a bit of an odd fall-back guy. Either they think he's recovered enough that he's ready for 3rd line minutes, or he's a 4th line filler in the event Bourque can't earn a spot.

Either way, I'm not one to beat the toughness drum, but I really worry about this team's ability to push back when games get chippy. Love the speed, but they're starting to creep towards being a little bit one dimensional.

Maybe that's why we have glass?

Lots of factors to consider, the team is expecting a lot of players to play in roles they haven't before.

With Henrik and the backend its a playoff team, but certainly not an upper echelon team. Last year my thoughts were that the Rangers could come out of the east if they didn't have to face Boston.

This system maximizes speed, so I think the team will be okay as long as they don't play teams that play a heavy brand of hockey (LA, BOS, ANA, SJ etc).

The Devils and Isles will be better by virtue of their goaltending situation alone. The division will be tougher than last year, but it's hard to be a glass half full guy with all the what-ifs surrounding this team.

Maybe that's why we have glass?

One guy who is going to get 8 minutes a night is going to carry that for the entire team? Yeah, no.

When those are the only two cars on the lot, the mini van is better than nothing.

I don't think you can assume that they were the only cars on the lot though. I guess it comes down to what kind of role they think Lombardi is going to play.

How exactly does this help us other than clearing cap space for players we already have room to re-sign?

Little is a better center than Brassard and he's locked up for the next FOUR years. Stepan becomes a RFA next season and will ask for MARKET VALUE. We save cap space not only for this year but next and allow ourselves to do something without giving up to much depth. If Staal walks next summer we get nothing, and if we try and trade him at the deadline, we will get a lot less at the deadline. Stuart is locked up for the next FOUR years at $2.06 AAV and is a solid enough 3rd pair dman for NY

No he isn't. Still an RFA.

That package likely doesn't get us Little and Stewart, by the way.

Re-Sign Daniel Carcillo

We need to re-sign Carcillo. Even with the signing of Lombardi, we still don't have enough players to fill the roster.

Without any rookies making the team, this is what our squad would look like today.

Kreider - Step - MSL
Nash - Brass - MZA
Hags - Moore - Glass
Lombardi - Mueller - Tarnaski

Mueller and Tarnaski are minor leaguers and Lombardi is a reclamation project who may well turn out to be a minor leaguer (or get injured, given his history).

Even if two rookie forwards make the team (no way do we open the season with 3+ forward rookies), one of Lombardi, Mueller or Tarnaski is still on the opening day top-12. And as soon as we start getting injuries, we are calling up all types of career minor leaguers and unready rookies. The post-lockout squad when we had to recall Segal, Newbury, Palmieri and the rest of the career minor leaguers will seem like a joy in comparison.

For a million a year, Carcillo adds very nice depth to the team and you don't have to worry about how he'll perform when you need to plug him on the fourth line. He's comfortable as the team's #13 forward and comfortable playing for the Rangers. In addition to fighting, he can chip in a goal or hold the puck in the offensive zone. Basically, it's him or Tarnaski as an injury replacement, so it's not even a close call. Who else is there to fill this role well? Carcillo is a good choice, no reason for further player turnover.

That bottom 6 makes me want to throw up. Pitiful.

Tarnasky is an AHL player. So is Mueller.

With Glass on the team, having Carcillo is really redundant. I'd definitely take him as the spare forward.

either way, Stepan is our #1 C this year and if he puts up CBJ Johansen numbers, he will want to be paid

Well, yeah he will.

What does it have to do with getting Little though?

I'd love Little on this team, too, just not sure WPG wants to part with him when they FINALLY have a good 1-2 Punch at center.

Brassards still good, and WPG gets a year of a Staal-Bogosian, pretty nasty shutdown pair, WPG also gets a year to try and negotiate a contract with him

and imagine if WPG flipped Brassard, Kane, Trouba for CAR Staals
WPG would have
x-E.Staal-Wheeler
Laad-J.Staal-x
Enstrom-Byfuglien
Staal-Bogosian

The ridiculously good development track Josh Morrissey is on probably makes Winnipeg not want Staal. He'll at the latest be in the NHL in two years.

So we can get a slight upgrade at center at the expense of a huge downgrade on defense? The gap between Staal and Stuart is far, far greater than the gap between Little and Brassard. We lose that trade by a mile.

If Stepan earns market value, then we pay him market value. I'm not sure what's wrong with that.
