That kind of flies in the face of the moves the Rangers made leading up to the trade deadline. Losing two first round picks when acquiring a 38 year old winger, as well as re-signing a 30 year old blue liner who isn't an optimal fit for the system doesn't scream "play the kids" or "youth movement" to me.

I think the team will make a move to fill at least one major hole.

Not to mention that 32 year old goaltender who was, by far, the biggest reason last year's team made the final.

How could anyone who pays attention to whats going on think the plan is to start from scratch with kids???

can it fill a hole without creating another hole? Agree with what you're saying, and had tried to respond but you did a better job than I could have done saying what I wanted to say.

That's really the major question mark of the day. I know a lot of folks want to deal Staal, but I don't think that makes a lot of sense unless you're getting another top-4 D back in return. To say we'd get a top-4 D and a piece to fill one of the holes up front would be a stretch at the very least. My question is do the Rangers consider dangling John Moore if Connor Allen can push for a spot out of camp? I think he's the most ready of he and McIlrath, and if he's ready, can the Rangers then flip Moore for a comparable forward? He has a solid set of tools, and if the Rangers can re-sign him cheaply, I'd be willing to bet they'd have a number of suitors.

Best hope is that the team can land a kid who is ready to break out, but maybe his current team has soured on him a bit or they have too many blockers in place.

That one I can understand because he's the top goalie in the NHL and should be able to play at that level for another 6-ish years. The MSL and Girardi moves are questionable because of the age factor in regards to the former, and the inability to really skate at a high level with the latter. Danny G is a great player, but he's not a great fit for this system. MSL is a great player, but he's not as great as he once was, and I doubt he'll return to that level this year. Especially if his linemates are a rookie and a guy who spent last year in Switzerland.

Who in particular?

The three teams will DEFINITELY be fighting for a wild card spot, at BEST... They've made no real improvements.

CAR - No real changes, just some adds on defense...
WSH - Will be marginally better, but I don't expect a transformation of a franchise, especially with those crippling Defenseman contracts
NJD - Will continue to have trouble scoring

These 5 teams will be fighting for playoff spots... PIT SHOULD be in the #1 spot for the Metro, but there's no doubt in my mind the race for 2nd, 3rd, and the 1st wildcard spot will be SUPER tight... But I still see no reason why the rangers don't get 3rd at worst, most likely 2nd.

NYI - Will be contending
PHI - Will be contending again
PIT - Will be contending again
CLB - Will be Contending again
NYR - Will be Contending again

I think you just said it. While I think the Rangers could get 2 or 3, it will be tight and if the Rangers win a couple less than last season and the Washington, who has mildly improved wins a couple more, they're in and the Rangers are fighting with CLB and potentially out. Carolina improves on defense...same thing. The Rangers may have net lost a couple guys. I rationalize that beginning the season with a home, with everyone healthy, that the start should be better and hopefully continue, but there are question marks and in some ways, most everything has to go right. MSL score around 30 (with a centerman TBD). Nash to net around 30. Stepan and Kreider step it up. Boyle to be status quo vis a vis Richards on the PP, and that gets them to somewhat even with last season. There's a drop-off in the fourth line, which helped neutralize some darn good lines. The third line (if Brassard's is the third) is missing a wheel at the moment. Maybe the answers are already there, but there definitely are questions and 82 games is a lot of games to ask a goalie to stand on his head.

Dan Girardi is the type of player who teams pay for though. Contenders are always looking for these gritty, physical minute eaters on the back-end.

Nothing says these players signed lone term have to finish their contracts here. They're assets

I think the best hope is JT Miller is ready to be in this league he can keep up with Hagelin and MSL, and Hagelin and MSL can help carry the line. We have been so focused on left defenseman, right defenseman...if Staal were moved it would be for a top six forward and the left defensive partner of Boyle become...Moore, or a journeyman who can be had for $1MM (if there is one). That creates a hole, which you never know, they may do because Lundqvist would fill that hole and offense may come at more of a premium. Think I'm resigned to taking my chances with this lineup to begin the season. Just haven't seen many other real options. The Rangers had a lot of luxuries last season. Some cheap forwards producing at good clips. Perhaps they'll get that in Miller and others, although there doesn't appear to be much evidence to suggest that.

Any chace Tyler Ennis's new contract plays a part in negotiations with Brassard?

@KevinWeekes: BREAKING : It's believed Ennis deal with @BuffaloSabres is in 5 yr 23 Mil range with a 4.6 Mil AAV.

Im a bit more pessimistic regarding how long Lundqvist can be great.

Ok boys take this with a grain of salt because I don't know how reliable this source is but they told me that the rangers are in talks with a Veteran forward. He didn't tell me a name just that they are in talks with him

I actually don't think I'd mind Setoguchi. I know he isn't what he was as a shark. Maybe he needs a change of scenery and he could probably replace Pouliot. Whoever/if ever we sign, I hope it's a good deal and it leaves us enough room without messing up our RFAs

So I guess our RFAs are going to arbitration. Anybody know if the hearing dates are set?

If we're not " going for it" why trade 2 1st rd picks for MSL???

If we are, how do explain this offseason because surely they knew the cap issues. ..

The kids coming up aren't exactly impact players...

They're all good arguments, but the only issue is will the competition be the same? All else being equal to last season, beginning the season with this roster doesn't look a heck of a lot worse than last season's (if you can buy off MSL scoring 25-30 goals without a centerman). If the other 7 playoff teams are the same, however, and some of the lower seeds are better, it could make for a difficult regular season.

Understand and agree. The only team in the east that I would expect real improvement from is TB - and that's not because of the free agents they signed but because I don't expect Stamkos to miss almost 50 games this season. That said, Bishop has to show he's for real. I suppose the Islanders will be better with a full season of Tavares but their defense, which was already their achilles heal, takes a hit with no A. MacDonald. I suppose Pittsburgh would benefit from a healthier Letang and Malkin but they lost a lot of production with Neal gone. Most other east teams are either taking a step back (like Ottawa) or staying the same like Philly, Columbus, Boston, Toronto, Detroit, etc...
