1. If Girardi goes who takes his minutes? Neither Boyle nor Klein can handle that workload.

2. Why is Girardi going to waive his NTC?

3. Kadri is probably not available.

Also remember it is exponentially easier to find a second pairing LHD, (they grow on trees) than a top pair minutes eating RHD. Depth wise, the correct move is to trade Staal.

Klein and Boyle can definitely handle 2-3 more minutes each to share Girardi's workload. Klein played 20+ minutes a night in NSH.

Kadri is available but they're not giving him away. It's going to cost.

I wish we hadn't re-signed Girardi with a NTC. I would've preferred to pay him 500k more per season to avoid the NTC. He's the perfect candidate to be traded to alleviate the cap pressure and allow us to re-sign Staal and Stepan to long term contracts without any problems. Girardi has likely already played his best hockey. And because of his style (much like Cally) I see him having a sharp Drury-esque decline in the next few seasons. I'd much rather lose Girardi than Staal. Unfortunately, Girardi does have the NTC and we have to accept it and move forward.

Oh and about the numbers:

I still think Richards would've had more success as a Ranger if he had worn #91.

Big mistake, Brad!

I would trade Girardi instantly — if possible. It's not.

The Run contributed so much to the self esteem of this team. One of the main reasons I wanted Girardi resigned was to do the same, he is core and we were fragile. I don't think we are fragile anymore.

I am sure like Anaheim would have given up Vaatanen and Maroon for Girardi, or something like that. Maroon takes Poos spot and Vaatanen starts behind Klein and Boyle to grow in to the role as Boyles heir.

But Girardi can't be moved. We have to "wait" until the LNTC kicks in...

Can you explain that? Is that for all new LTCs or just his.

Pretty cool for anyone who had a Brian Boyle jersey. They now have a Dan Boyle jersey since it has the same name and same number on it.

Not sure I've ever seen that happen with the same name AND number.

As a B Boyle jersey owner I actually absolutely hate this. I'm not trying to represent D Boyle. Especially if it goes as well as most NYR UFAs. Oh well, nothing to be done.

Dan Boyle and Kevin Klein absolutely could not, in any universe grounded in reality, handle Dan Girardi's minutes or competition.

If you think G has already played his best hockey and is trending to break down, why wouldn't Toronto think the same? On top of that, why would they trade a young 2C who has been producing well for them?

Trust me I want Kadri, but G doesn't get you him, especially with Dubas using advanced stats for everything.

Where did I say suggest trading Kadri for Girardi?

I responded to the post I quoted. Separate thoughts. Never suggested Kadri for Girardi.

Klein and Boyle aren't capable of playing 3 minutes more per game? Klein has played against top-6 competition his whole career. Klein paired with McDonagh would likely be fine against top players. Is this your first year watching hockey? You seem to paint everything in very black & white extremes.

This thread is getting stupid with the trading of our defense...

Yea and not to mention that Kevin Klein isn't in the same stratosphere as Dan Girardi, never was, never will be, and would be a disaster playing his minutes against his competition.

Dan Girardi is an ESSENTIAL player on this team.. There's not one player on our team or in our system who can take his minutes, unless you're talking about moving Ryan Mcdonagh to the right side that he played in the Olympics and pairing him with Staal.. but then what's your 2nd pairing?.. Girardi eats up minutes against the other teams best players night in and night out. simply too valuable to think about moving.

Girardi doesn't just play a ton of minutes, against top competition, he is also consistently in the lineup. He rarely ever misses a game or a shift. The guy is a rock. He is consistently amongst the top of the league in blocked shots and hits.

He has missed a grand total of 5 games in the last 7 seasons.

Irreplaceable.

Staal, if we can get him signed between 5 and 5.5, do it. Worry about trades later.

Girardi will decline so quickly you won't even know who he is anymore. The contract they gave him is about 3 years too long. Granted, by then he'll probably be able to be traded as the contract is all front loaded.

Girardi doesn't eat those minutes up, McDonagh does. You are thinking about Girardi of the last three years. He is now 30, and getting slower. He won't continue to be as effective as he has been. I expect a Rozsival like decline.

I think Girardi just gets worn down from all the minutes. If he played 18-20 minutes a game instead of 22-24 minutes a game (and more than that in the playoffs), I think he'd probably look way better. The part that kind of sucks is that we don't really have any RHD that could manage the minutes that McDonagh is capable of playing. Boyle needs his minutes managed as well and Klein is a step down from Girardi/Boyle even though he's a solid player. Maybe we can double shift McD every once in awhile in for Moore and have him play with Klein for a couple shifts a game.

Considering Girardi, there really isn't any replacement within the system. I don't (currently) see McIlrath playing 1st pair minutes, nor do I think Klein is capable of them either. Boyle might have been a first-pairing D a few seasons ago, but I wouldn't pair him with McD now. It's a rock and a hard place.

I don't think much is changing. If Skjei decides to make the jump and looks promising, then it's time to consider moving Staal. For the right side, it's a much bigger question mark. It might be time to trade a guy for a promising RHD from another team.

In terms of defensive depth (from our current top 6 and then ranking by experience):

McD - G
Staal - Boyle
Moore - Klein
Hunwick- Kostka
Allen - Kampfer
Bodie - McIlrath
Skjei - Zamorsky

I feel like our RHD drops off pretty quickly while we have some depth on the left side. Not uncommon, but I'd like to shore that up, if possible. I feel like Allen would certainly be capable of 3rd pairing minutes if need be. Skjei is a future 2nd pairing guy, I think. I'm still uncertain regarding McIlrath.

Matt Tennyson is a righty d-man (something of a PMD) on the Sharks. Numbers aren't too dissimilar from Allen. I'd be interesting in seeing what the Sharks might be looking at for him.

In summary: Girardi might not be the best option, but he's the best we have.
