2014-2015 Manchester Monarchs - 2015 Calder Cup Champions!

Maybe bad was too much; sub-par is a better description. The Monarchs played a very strong game and limited his workload. That goal was just terrible.

The problem is there's one of those every 1.5 games...and most of them are long shots. It's bizarre. I'm really wondering if he just needs a vision test  Anything else and he's money.

A couple of quick thoughts:

A. Weal is the real deal. He willed that first goal to happen. Tenacity, winning board battles, moves, then more moves. At the time I thought he'd gotten his own rebound for the goal. I think he's a center... so we will see.
B. O'Neill. I know people like him and his has been productive. Thing is he's getting battered. Targeted the whole night and only when Utica was rushed or had become disorganized that he had space. He used it when he got it but unlike Weal he didn't create it.
C. Mersch. I know he got the GW and I know he's been great but honestly this was the first game that I've seen it. He's not all that fast in the middle of the ice but like Kopitar (and in all honestly Nolan or Frolov) he's got that combination of puck control and quickness. He uses the body to get the space to make a quick move. That's a heck of a valuable skill. We have some slots next year and I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a shot at being the next from nothing to top winger rookie. Shore/Weal/Mersch.... who do you pick?
D. Miller was getting burned the whole night. Just brutal. Got burned jumping at moves, got out bodied, and made some passes that even Muzin on his worst day would be shocked by. Thing is he knew it. Got more aggressive in the scrums. One tinny Utica guy was clearly trying to be the lesser version of Burrows (except without the diving).
E. Auger may have a shot somewhere. He's not all that strong on his skates but he seems to be learning how to use the body just via massive scale.
F. Defense pairings are getting changed a lot. In Hartford I saw a lot of Forbort/Gravel. Now the only pairing that's heavy is LoVerde/Bodnarchuk. Everyone else is mixed from shift to shift. The forward prospects are getting lots of ice time... not sure much the defense.
G. Kempe is the real deal. He's just so smooth. When Weal makes a move it's like a whirlwind when Kempe does something similar it just happens. He's also a guy targeted. He'll push back but he's clearly just not as physically developed as some of the real vets. Against someone his own age like Virtanen who went high on a hit near the boards. Lots of talking lots of pushing. Thought we could get some Scandinavian on Scandinavian violence (kids these days).
H. I saw that 2nd goal on Berube all the way from shot to net. Just brutal. Way out at the red circle. Defensemen in position. Hell I actually think it was more of a dump then a shot. It curved right to the corner but even with that Berube didn't react till it was in the net.

Utica goalie kicked net off moorings at least 5 times last night, maybe today the refs will do their job and call delay of game penalties.

i really thought in the highlights at around 5:30 you can SEE him kicking the net back. it's clear.

Just got back from church so I'm sliding this in at the last moment since the game starts in 45 minutes.

I'm a man of the people. Didn't feel good last night. Still don't. But here you go.

Mersch Shines In Return, Monarchs Take 1-0 Lead In CCF

CNS, I want to thank you for taking the time and effort to write that recap up even though you're not feeling well and a lot of us saw the game on AHL Live. It's sad that these are the last few games you'll be covering the minor league team for us. Praise for the team as a whole and specifically, Mersch and Weal, but you also have good words for Zach O'Brien

Mersch and Weal had tremendous games, but did anybody have more quality scoring chances than Zach O’Brien? Doubtful. The Newfie had at least four or five really good scoring chances, but simply couldn’t bury them. If he plays the same way in Game 2, you’d have to think he lights the lamp eventually.

I'm going to have to pay more attention to the defense today. Yesterday I was looking more at the forwards. "Thought we could get some Scandinavian on Scandinavian violence." :D I don't imagine they'd get too awful hot-headed, but I don't know.

A)We need a GDT
B) where could I listen?

ETA: Jon Rosen tweeted that Nick Shore won 21 of 25 faceoffs. Seriously, that's wicked.

mersch isnt as good when he's not planted in front. needs more work imo. doesn't win the board battles for example

o'brien finally gets his goal, deserved! :handclap:

going into the 3rd tied. man, i'd hate to have to go to their rink with a split series. we need this "w".

c'mon monarchs!

about 5:00 minutes left, still tied. arrrgh!

mersch skating in backwards, kind of cool, and distracting, passed to o'neill. too bad it didnt result in a goal.

2:02 to go!! tied still.

that sure was a hard fought win. I thought both teams played well defensively. getting into the offensive zone was very tough for both clubs tonight.
The 2nd period wasn't very good, but some of that should go to Utica. But just like in game 1 Manchester owned the 3rd period and OT.
Nic Dowd is a beauty.
If that was indeed the final game as the AHL Monarchs, I am glad I was there. what a win.

I am glad that you were there too

I'm glad I was there as well. Man I'm going to miss the Monarchs. Hard to be a Kings fan out on the east coast. Games at 10:30 PM... surrounded by lessor teams. Monarchs had been that bright point that at least once in a while I got to see some of the prospects.

RIP AHL Monarchs.
