2014-2015 Manchester Monarchs - 2015 Calder Cup Champions!

The Manchester Monarchs Twitter feed shared a couple of pieces on a few players.

This includes video interviews with both Brian O'Neill and Sean Backman.

The hosts start talking about Michael Mersch about 27 minutes into the podcast. (You can stream it or get the podcast on ITunes.) The Michael Mersch interview starts 1 hour in.

Host Bob Howard is rooting for the Manchester Monarchs. Host Megan Reiff is rooting for Utica. If Utica advances to the Calder Cup Finals, it's gonna get ugly. ;)

Anybody know if the Finals are televised or if AHL Live is free for the Calder Cup?

Nothing has been announced yet. I'm doubtful about it being televised. As for AHL Live being free. There's a better chance of that. I know 2 year ago they did offer it for free. But I'm not sure if they did last year. We'll likely get announcement on the broadcast schedule as soon as the finals match up is set.

The Utica Comets won last night 3-2, and took a 3-2 series lead over the Grand Rapids Griffins. Game 6 is tomorrow night in Utica.

Mike Stothers, Manchester Monarchs sweep their way into Calder Cup Finals

Hershey Bears head coach Troy Mann had a phone conversation with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins head coach John Hynes this week.

One topic was a riddle the AHL hasn't been able to solve in 2014-15.

How do you stop the Manchester Monarchs?
....

"You don't see the other conference, so you just don't know how good those other teams are in comparables," Mann said. "We felt all year, especially when we played Manchester at home there in March, that they were the best team we had faced all year."

Utica takes a 3 games to 2 lead in the best of seven series, heading home to try and take the series against Grand Rapids. Utica has a solid defensive team with several players with NHL experience. Not as explosive offensively as the Monarchs, but goals may be harder to come by for the Monarchs if this ends up being the match up. Jacob Markstrom is in goal for Utica.

The Monarchs did seem to get through what was best defensive team in the AHL in the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins. They also chased the best goalie in the league out of his net.

Hoping they do the same type of damage to Utica should they meet. Whereas Grand Rapids is on the opposite end of the spectrum of being an offensive powerhouse, leading the league in goals for.

I'm just hoping for a Game 7 between Utica and GR...

Schedule for the Calder Cup Finals (including broadcast schedule). It doesn't look like it will be broadcasted on TV. No word yet on the price of AHL Live for the finals. As I said before, it has been offered for free in the past.

I already got tickets to games 1, 6, & 7! I can't wait! :yo:

Oh god, even when we dodge the kings, our affiliate seems to manage to play you guys, At least this time it's for the title.

Should be a beauty between Utica and Manchester

Jesus. Looking at their roster, they are absolutely stacked with first rounders, high end prospects, and former NHLers.

Utica it is. I don't know much about them. Good defensive team. They're lead by Jacob Markstrom in goal.

The Comets aren't a team with many good finishers but play a fast moving puck possession game with good systems, tight checking and, most of the time, stellar goaltending from Jacob Markstrom.

Our top offensive players are Cal O'Reilly (Ryans bro) who's like the Henrik Sedin of the AHL (0 G,15A),Sven Baertchi (who came over from the Flames at the trade deadline and has been our most dynamic forward by far),Alex Grenier a Canucks 3rd rounder from 2011 who has been a revelation during this playoff run after a several meh regular seasons, and Bobby Sanguinetti who has been our best PMD by far.

Our D are all healthy and pretty well balanced with good puck movers like Sanguinetti,Adam Clendenning (came over from the 'Hawks system earlier this year),and Alex Biega, along with steady guys like Frankie Corrado who's been up with the Canucks several times, and former Duck Kent Huskins.

It will be interesting to see how we match up,basically zero history between our team.

 Looking forward to this series.

Thanks for the rundown, Bitz. Congratulations on Utica becoming the Western Conference champions. :handclap: I've read that yours is a strong defensive team and frankly I'm not looking forward to facing Markstrom in net. Personally, though, I'm glad to have a couple of Utica fans stop by. I haven't really watched the NHL playoffs because my team isn't in them. The AHL playoffs don't get much press so it's cool to have fans outside our board really be into it.

Thanks for the info. It should be a good series!

thanks for the rundown.
Not going to lie Markstrom scares the crap out of me. He is on fire right now. Very impressive shutting down the Griffs.
should be a great series.

Sanguinetti? Isn't he like 40 by now?

I believe he's 27.He's probably ready for an NHL job but our D in Vancouver managed to stay pretty healthy for once so he didn't get a shot during his call-up.

Thanks for the congrats,it's been a great story for Utica as the Comets basically started as an expansion team last season with a rookie coach,no returning players, and all new staff and lost their first 10 games before turning it around after X-mas last season. The Utica fans have been the loudest and probably the most passionate of any of the AHL teams and really embraced the team.

We've been lucky to have a group of knowledgeable posters from Utica contributing to our Comets thread since we affiliated with them last season which has made for a really active thread.
