2014-2015 Manchester Monarchs - 2015 Calder Cup Champions!

Is Kempe improving as the playoffs go on? He's finding the score sheet more consistently these last few games…

Here's a kid who missed being in this year's draft by about a week, and he's contributing in the AHL playoffs :yo:

Wow. I feel good for Manchester fans since it's the last year for this AHL team and they make the finals.

Some of these guys will make a name for themselves for NHL jobs either with Kings or another team.

Hopefully the Monarchs get more fans to attend the Calder Cup Final games. Give them some support for their last season there. It's not as if the players are bailing out on the fans.

ProHockeyTalk: Kings’ AHL team advances to Calder Cup Final

Weal and O’Neill Proving They Deserve A Shot On Kings Roster

Wednesday night the Los Angeles Kings AHL affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs, beat the Hartford Wolfpack 3-1 to sweep the AHL Eastern Conference Final. Regular season AHL MVP Brian O’Neill, and playoff scoring leader Jordan Weal continue to push the team forward and proving that they deserve a shot at cracking the Kings lineup next season.

fantastic. get some rest for game 1 of the Calder Final next Saturday. I cannot wait.
hopefully Mersch is good to go. I wont even get into the hit. its not even worth getting into. They are going home. That's how you get payback.

that is awesome.
nothing wrong with some good natured fun with the kid.

Then LoVerde gets in on it...

On if he saw Kempe in his flip-flops with his suit yesterday:

“No I did not. I would have loved to see it; he would have gotten a hard time. Obviously he’s young and we need to teach him a few things. He’s fortunate he escaped, he would have heard from a few guys.”

Next time I'll bet Adrian will remember to pack his shoes.

So with the Reign done, does that mean Kitsyn (who I think is the only Monarchs or Kings contracted player in Ontario) gets the call-up as a Black Ace for the Calder Cup?

Games 1 and 2 of the finals will be June 6th and 7th in Manchester. It also appears that the series will be a 2-3-2 format. As Ticketmaster now has games listed for June 16th and 17th. Those are likely games 6 and 7.

If my research is correct. This is the first time a Kings AHL (or IHL) affiliate has reached the finals since 1971, when the Springfield Kings won the Calder Cup. It's remarkable how much Dean Lombardi and company have turned this ENTIRE organization around.

If you want a real eye opener, check out this roster of the Lowell Lock Monsters, the Kings' previous AHL affiliate before the Monarchs came into existence. They were also coached by Bruce Boudreau.

The Kings sure have come a long way since Lombardi took over, whereas Dave Taylor's staff just drafted guys and didn't put much thought into the development side.

And player development was considerably worse in the 90s when their main minor league affiliate was the IHL's Phoenix Roadrunners, and then they had no minor league affiliate so they shared affiliation with the Long Beach Ice Dogs (IHL), the Fredericton Canadiens (AHL) and Houston Aeros (IHL). What a mess they were then.

I am hoping they revise it in case they play Utica.
I can see the 2-3-2 for Grand Rapids. I have never liked the 2-3-2 at all.
Manchester to Utica would probably be a 4-5 hour bus ride.

I blame the entire bolded part on Kevin Gilmore and even more on Lieweekly for hiring that loser

Given those two clowns over saw team operations and the budget, I'm sure they had a big hand in the lack of having a proper player development staff. They just drafted or signed guys and let 'em play without much direction.

Looks like the Kings in waiting have learned a thing or two from the big club in these playoffs. Now the big boys can learn a thing or two from them, like finishing with a great regular season record :naughty:.

Well.... no one ever said the AHL isn't wacky.

Apparently, the Ontario Reign, as well as the 4 other California teams. Will play less games then the rest of the league. The speculation is the rest of the teams would play a 76 game schedule. While the Cali. teams would play a 68 game schedule. How the playoffs are going to work is a bit of a mystery. The commissioner Dave Andrews did say that the league would change to divisional playoff format. Similar to what the NHL is currently using. But it gets weirder when it appears the Texas Stars and San Antonio Rampage, who are both in the Pacific division, will play more games then the 5 California teams. The article below speculates that playoff qualification would be based on point percentage format. But I still can't find any direct confirmation that the Texas' teams will be playing a 76 games. I'm not sure exactly how the question was asked by the reporter. Having all the teams in the league play a different amount of games then one division is crazy. To have 2 teams in that division play more games then the other 5 is BAT **** CRAZY!

(Article talks about California teams in the 2nd half of that article)
