CHL becoming a full-season international league would basically mean another KHL-type league in Europe, I don't see the point in that. CHL is an opposite attempt to KHL to build a European league. KHL tries to do it with a format of one big league, CHL by having a competition for teams from multiple leagues.

I think they should definitely go for this.

Yeah but I hard to see them doing it. They do everything they can to keep their small leagues as they are. Any development is scary for most people. They just wanna see their good old rivals, they don't really care about international stuff. The way I sense it, this league, while intresting, is just boosted version of ET and only reason they are doing this is KHL. If there wasn't KHL, there wouldn't be interest enough at all to develop anything international.

Now that's just bullcrap. The clubs have been at this for years. The desire to have a competition like this has been there for decades. There's been enough stories about it on for example Finnish hockey publications like the late Kiekkolehti and Jääkiekkolehti. Fro years the clubs expected the IIHF to do the majority of the work in creating one. the collapse of the previous version showed them they have to be more proactive themselves.

I really want Russian teams to participate, but I don't know how it's gonna work out with the current system. With 26 founding teams guaranteed a spot in the next coming three years, it will be hard to get Russian teams involved. I don't think they will be in this league earlier than the 17-18 season. The question is, will the Russian teams still want to be a part of Champions League by then???

Also, if they become a part of the tournament by then, the tournament will need to drastically cut the amount of teams participating from Sweden, Finland and a few other countries. Sweden and Finland currently has 8 teams (I think?) each, they will need to cut those down to 4 teams. Are they willing to do that? I doubt it. It's a matter of control. The same way Russia wants to control the KHL, the founders want to control the development of the CHL and one way to do that is to have full control over the Russian participation and not let them get any influence at all.

What do you mean, still want? KHL didn't want to take part in the CHL, it wasn't the other way around. I think the other founders would have welcomed the Russians with open arms, if only the latter would be willing to join.

Yes, KHL was interested in taking part in the CHL. There were negotiations that stranded. There has been said that participation of Jokerit was one of the things they couldn't agree on. There has aslo been said that there still are discussions about KHL teams joining for the 2015-16 season.

I agree with pulverapa that it will be crowded if they are adding KHL teams to the current number of founding teams and champions.

I understood that HIFK, acting just as you expect that team to act, pretty much blocked Jokerit from CHL and that's why whole KHL refused. Some hifk fans have been claiming its not the case but I don't really know myself what is the truth. All I know for sure is Jokerit wanted in CHL, HIFK wanted them out and Jokerit didin't get in and now no KHL team is in.

I mean what I said, it doesn't have to mean that KHL wanted to join this season.............

Either you choose to misunderstand and create some kind of topic, or you could do what a normal person would do, assume that I mean "if they still want to join".

If I would change the sentence to "If they want to join in 17/18", that could impose that they have a plan in joining the 17/18 season, which would be completely wrong. So, just assume I mean what I mean. :)

When you use the words still and want together, that means the want is already in place. That's what the word still means.

The impression I got from various articles and stories was that because Harkimo had been at the forefront in wanting to a create a CHL, then suddenly in his usual lack of patience mood, sold the arena and part of Jokerit and went to KHL and STILL wanted to take part in the CHL, soured not only Finnish clubs but other European clubs as well. The resentment for him was almost unanimous among the "founding clubs".

What needs to be done:

Buy out the founding clubs and make the CHL a massive 64 teams competition from the 15/16 season.

16 clubs from KHL
8 clubs from Sweden
8 clubs from Finland
8 clubs from Switzerland
8 clubs from Germany
4 clubs from Czech Republic
4 clubs from Austria
8 clubs from various countries

No limits in KHL, if Vladivostok makes the playoffs, they are in.

One KHL team in each group
Combine Sweden/Finland, one team in each group
Combine Switzerland/Germany, one team in each group
Combine Austria/Czech/Various, one team in each group

Make sure travel costs are covered with centralized money. Add a huge Russian sponsor such as Gazprom or Megafon. If there's a big German company, that would be interesting too.

Who should buy out them? Why would the founding clubs, that owns the majority of the shares, want to sell?

Do you not remember why the last CHL attempt folded? It seems like Gazprom is only interested in spending money as long as Russian teams are winning. When a Swiss team won CHL, Gazprom money (and CHL) disappeared. When a Czech team almost won KHL, their fundiing suddenly disappeared.

For the CHL to stay in business for a long time, I think it's better if it is based on stable revenue streams, than on charity from a single company.

Yeah well, it's probably not gonna happen. The founding clubs will lose their guaranteed spot in the 17/18 season, perhaps that is the time to make this thing big?

The main reason the last attempt folded was the finance crisis that swept the world. This time around things feel alot better.

I can't believe everybody is so negative about CHL, calling it a joke etc... Honestly it's a great idea to play games that actually matter in november/october and throughout the season. One game and you're either out or if you win you go through to the finals... And the money isn't that bad.

CHL is a much easier way to create European competition among clubs, it does not cost a fortune for the clubs who are in. I'm really pumped up for this year's competition. My club will never make the CL in football so this is the closest thing I can get to that... :)

The main reason it folded because Reebok and Gazprom pulled out, the latter being the bigger blow. Financial crisis had nothing to do with them, but rather Russian teams failing to win it.

Anyone see a possibility of an eventual tournament involving the Champions League winner, the Gagarin cup winner, and the Stanley Cup winner?

SVT (Sweden) has announced their broadcasting schedule for the first CHL weekend:

21 aug, SVT24, 20:00, Djurgården-Fribourg
22 aug, SVT24, 20:00, HV71-Kloten Flyers
23 aug, SVT2, 17:00, Sönderjysk-Skellefteå
24 aug, SVT2, 15:50, Linköping-Bolzano

SVT24 is accessible for most Swedes, but has usually few viewers.
SVT2 is one of the most viewed channels in Sweden.

Hopefully SVT will also broadcast some other games on Svtplay on the internet, but I haven't found any information about that yet.

Also, laola1.tv will stream > 70 games over the internet

In addition, there is also an agreement on the use of media rights in Germany and Austria with LAOLA1.tv, the international online sports TV platform. LAOLA1.tv will show more than 70 Champions Hockey League games as live streams on the internet and for mobile devices (iOS and Android). The agreement covers live broadcasts of 54 games of the group phase involving clubs from the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) and the Austrian Erste Bank Eishockey Liga (EBEL). In the group stage, LAOLA1.tv will show five games involving German clubs per round and all games involving Austrian clubs in addition to other games involving top international clubs and 10 games from the playoffs. As well as the live broadcasts, LAOLA1.tv will make the entire games and highlights available as videos on demand in the LAOLA1 video centre.
