Tampa Fan here, how has Reto Suri been playing? Has it been good enough to warrant his place on the Olympic squad? Tampa still holds his North American rights I believe so I am genuinely interested.

It was kind of a big thing a year ago, but most of the newspaper have paywalls for articles that are older than one month. I found one though:
http://www.blick.ch/sport/eishockey/nla/hockey-liga-duldet-fresszettel-id88627.html
It´s in german and the newspaper that published the story isn´t always reliable, but at least for sports they seem to be reliable. I wouldn´t read any other section of the newspaper than sports though!

The main thing is, that Ueli Schwartz, head of the Swiss hockey league, admitted, that they knew of this problem. They blame it on the teams for not doing their job very well.

So everything I said should be true. The guys who keep track of the statistics of each game are not officials of the league, but of the teams themselves. Not very reliable, especially for +/- which is a very heavy stat to keep track of.

thanks FA, yes I see the problem was/is at root not in the published figures so much.
This article is from January 2012. Hope the latest figures are run better.:shakehead

Suri is having a very good season. Last year he started slowly but stepped up once the lockout players left Zug and peaked at the World Championship, and he has been able to keep this pace so far this season.

Being on the last WC team obviously gave him a headstart for the Olympic team, but his play this season only made his case stronger.

But if I'm not mistaken, his contract with Tampa was voided. Although I'm sure they have an agreement to sign a new one once he's a free agent.

I really don't like Switzerland's jerseys for Sochi. They are just too plain for me, although they should be better once the numbers and names are added.

I would say this team is the favorite in their game vs the Czech Republic.
Strong defense and a solid goalie should be able to beat the aging Czechs.
This team will finish top 6, wouldn't be shocked if they got to bronze medal game.

Does anyone know something more on Plüss' injury? He left the game yesterday after a collision with Suri and didn't return. It looked like his head might have been involved - a possible concussion?

They get closer and closer, but I don't think they'll be favorite against the Czechs anytime soon. There's just too much NHL experience in their Roster, especially offensively.
Anything is possibly if the D stands strong and Goalies in good shape, but they won't be favorites.

What's the idea with the sidelist? Will there be a replacement ONLY if there is an injury, or if, say Sbisa returns ahead of schedule and is in-form, will they drop someone for him? I'm assuming the only reason why he's on the sidelist and not on the roster is because they're not sure whether he'll be ready to go yet. Bärtschi on the other hand I assume is probably not gonna be in unless he works his way back onto the NHL roster and tears it up on a scoring streak.

The sidelist are in case a player - whom is selected for Sochi - would be injured. And you must have severals medical certificates.

According to hockeyfans.ch it´s almost certain that Philippe Furrer won´t be participating in the Olympics. The neck injury, which he´s battled all season, seems to have gotten worse.
I wonder who would take his spot if this news were confirmed...

In any case, get well soon, Philippe!

A healthy FURRER makes sense on this roster but I never understood Simpson's decision on him and WEBER.(yes I know right shooter, not convinced by this argument though).
BEZINA is next. If he played for SCB or ZSC he would be in already

Simpson knows how to avoid awkward questions from French speaking Swiss television during Winter Classic.

"Peu importe d'où les sélectionnés viennent. Je ne me base que sur leurs qualités. Et il y a beaucoup de Romands dans les joueurs de piquet», a-t-il botté en touche au micro de la RTS.

Does not matter from where selected players come from. I am only looking at their qualities. There are lots of ROMANDS in the side list.

I pair with WEBER, was it not like this during lockout.

These stupid language arguments exist only in the mind of RTS or Le Matin journalists (that Winter Classic coverage was so painful to watch), who for some reason saw Bezina as the biggest snub on the team. Even fans who are usually ready to complain about anything trust Simpson on that one. Bezina is not in because his international resumé is here for everyone to see, and he wouldn't be in either if playing for another team.

Regarding Furrer's possible replacement (by the way, he's not out yet), I guess Sbisa or a defenseman who made the team last year (out of the three, Blum is having the best season but Grossmann is closer style-wise) have good chances. Hopefully Bezina is behind those four.

I actually think that Geering has a chance as well. He´s playing a solid and physical defensive game, just like Blum and Sbisa. My best guess is that one of these three will be the replacement.
Bezina is just a defensive liability and we have enough of those in Streit, Weber and Blindenbacher. (not that these players are bad, but their defensive play could use an upgrade. Offensively they are very good though)

I like Geering and I'm sure we'll see him at the WC soon, but I can't see Simpson picking him for the Olympics over players with international experience.

I believe that we have too namy NHLers !

NHLers will play like NHLers ... but ours are not Crosby, Ovechkin, Shea Weber or ...that level ...

While our LNA style could have, through their system, and their speed, been surprising ! specially on big ice.

:sarcasm:

You are no BEZINA fan obviously, but IMO draw too quick conclusions about everybody backing Simpson on that one.

While I agree language arguments are stupid you can not avoid them in CH.

Your appreciation of Winter Classic coverage is subjective. I enjoyed it and fans(in the French part) would not have understood TV not bringing the Bezina question, as it was in the press and internet and not only in Le Matin.

I am not specially fan of his or of GS but he is, right now, the most complementary option on the side list.
Although he has his defensive flows(like all our defense), his physical presence is necessary in front of own goal and in corners and to get respect when it needs to.

OUR DEFENSE IS TOO SMALL: Streit,Blindenbacher,Seger,Diaz,Weber all small guys for hockey defenses. Only Vauclair 1.84,Josi 1,87 are relatively big.

The oponents are not the WC oponents, bigger and better forwards.

Not clear to me how you can see two reconvalescents (SBISA,FURRER), and two small defenses(BLUM,GROSSMANN) before him. You could put bigger DU BOIS, I would anderstand.

Sbisa? so far 9 games. Comes from a bad Lockout season and non existant actual one. Not in shape for an Olympic tournement and moreover on big ice, not his best surface. He starts ice practice these days how can he be ready?

To go on with FURRER is a big RISK, specially that we know now of his recurrent head and neck symptoms.

I read he went to States for treatment.

I like BLUM GROSSMANN GEERING but we need size and experience. Geneva's captain has it.

Not sure I follow you on BEZINA'S résumé that everybody can see? The stats? the experience? He got more International games that the three above mentionned together.
