If we are gonna do that, just trade a 7th for him.

He is only making 3m , 2m but still has a cap hit of 6.5m which we can use to be above the floor.

Briere seems to be following in Redden's footsteps: his play has suddenly dropped off rather dramatically

If there isn't anyone else then go for it, but we can do and definitely need better

I certainly don't think he's a first liner anymore, top 6 might be pushing it even

He's just filling a spot and letting the young prospects develop at a slower pace.

At some point though something's gotta give

I get that we're still in a rebuild and yadiyada but if it's true that Cammalleri is available I think not going after him is a terrible mistake: we can get him, he fills a need, is clutch in the playoffs etc...

If the reason he doesn't end up in Ottawa is because of his salary then we are in far worse shape than I thought we were (and no, I'm not saying 7 million is chump change)

At some point it needs to stop being "we'll get there eventually" and it becomes "we're going to get the best players we can get"

"You reap what you sow" sort of thing: the Senators need some serious scoring help on the wing; getting a damaged Briere isn't good enough.

So Sakic said today that Colorado is not drafting Jones at 1st.

He's just scaring Florida.

Florida panics that they wont get MacKinnon @ #2, all along they think this is what is going to happen with all the connections Jones has with Colorado.

Florida trades up to #1, picks MacKinnon, Avs pick Jones at #2, who they wanted all along plus pick up another asset.

It would be a master move

I still can't believe Colorado would pass on Jones

Yeah Mackinnon is going to be stud but at one point you need to address team needs, when a guy like Jones is available, even if he isn't BPA, it's an easy decision

Yeah but you adress team needs when your not picking 1st overall.

Stastny has 1 year left and they have good center depth right now but who knows after next season.

Draft Mackinnon trade a center for a defenseman.

What is the highest any team has moved to draft 1st overall?

Looks like from 19 to 1 by Montreal in 1980. (Traded Ron Andruff, Sean Shanahan, Canadiens option to swap 1980 first round picks (#19-Paul Gagne) to Rockies for Canadiens option to swap 1980 first round picks (#1-Doug Wickenheiser) on 1976-09-13)

Mendes tweeted that Ottawa is not likely to use a buyout this year.

i wonder what that means for a JOB is he traded or playing for us?

Using a buyout on JOB would be really dumb anyways. His salary isn't much, not like he is unmovable.

it would be fine like the butler buyout but around 300K cheaper. it also opens up a contract against our limit although not sure right now how many they have on the books right now.

but he does take a roster spot.

I like JOB

Ideally we package Smith alongside other good assets in a trade for a winger and give the fourth line centre position to JOB: I think he's better suited for the role than Smith

Smith is a pretty good player, he could help sweeten the pot in a trade if we need to

Obviously JOB has been passed in the depth but what did he do to need being bought out? He'd been fine to keep for depth.

They didn't play him for 19 games for some unknown reason and basically we can replace him easily.

i mean i like him as a sen but if your not gonna play him at all, Sens have depth who should be waiver exempt and play 4th line minutes no problem.

i kinda wonder if he was just injured last year.

What would it take to trade up to #3 to potentially get Drouin? Is he good enough to offer Zibby and our 1st (17th overall)?

I would do that in a heartbeat. It would take more though.

No, it wouldn't. Two first rounders for one is plenty. Especially with Zibanejad looking so poised and ready this past season. It's overpayment, but Zib + 1st is what Tampa would likely want to move out of the #3 slot. Any more and you're setting yourself up for failure.
