I still think we need a top four D above all else. We were consistently outshot night in and night out this past season, and our goaltending saved us. We can't expect our goalies to be in the .940 save percentage range year after year.

That had little to do with who we had on our back end. That was more of a result of Paulrus' coaching tactics when all the superstars were dropping like flies. We didn't have the offensive talent to continue to be a puck possession team. Paulrus implemented a defensive scheme that prevented teams from getting much more than perimeter chances.

Not sure that's true; we had 52.2% of all shots at even strength over the season. We certainly allowed tons of shots, but we got our fair share as well.

This is the conventional wisdom, but it is more complicated than that. The game by game shot stats can be found here:

http://senators.nhl.com/club/gamelog.htm

2 of the 8 worst shots against this season were prior to the Karlsson injury (trying to say anything pre-Spezza injury is pointless because it happened too early), while only one of our best shots against games was pre-Karlsson injury. Once players started coming back the SOG against improved in some games but not others, and it is certainly impossible to generalize.

Be that as it may, two of our three current best defensemen in Karlsson and Cowen were out for big chunks of the season. Also, those two are still developing on the defensive side of things.

Very true. What happened is our goaltending was awesome and our overall shooting percentages were pretty bad. From my perspective it is tougher to improve team shooting via trade(s) or UFA signing(s) than it is to improve team defense. But your point is well taken.

Simmonds has a NMC, Voracek is really the only guy worth plucking out of Philly that doesn't hold a NMC That I could see going for the right price.

Wow. That would be amazing. Fits in with the youth movement too but maybe it would be better to get an older veteran type(around 30, give or take).

WS has a modified NTC, not sure what the details are though.

Anyone interested in giving a contract to Daugavins? Would be mainly for Bingo (remember, he was placed on waivers because he would rather play, then be scratched even if it was playing in the AHL, and Boston hasn't played him much so he might not want to sign there), but if we had injuries Daug could play already knowing the system and having some chemistry with the guys?

For some reason I think we'll acquire a top end forward and a top 3 defender through trade. Both of em. I unno why but Im getting that feeling from the presser Murray made.

Think about it, Gonchar was huge piece of our D this year, even Norris talk, and he's gone, no way does Wiercioch replace the presence let alone the ability to play both ends as good. I think we make some pretty big moves that'll see some roster spots open up by the trades like Gryba or Wier moving for the better D in a package and roster players upfront which will be filled by the top line forward and a pickup from free agency like Raymond/Penner.

In what world does this make sense? We HAD injuries and he wasn't playing...

At least try and be realistic in your ideas.

I said mainly AHL, and I don't see how it could hurt to have someone familiar with the organization. Also, Daug played in 19 games, so it wasn't like he didn't play at all. He was just behind others on the depth chart

We'll trade our 17th pick at the draft for Niño Niederreiter, then in turn sign Mark Streit on July 5th.

Of the 78 players with 200 or more shot attempts this year, Clarkson had the second best "on net percentage" with 66.91% of his shot attempts hitting the net. However, he was 41st in "goals per total shot attempt" with 5.58%.

Last season, he was third in "on net percentage" and ninth in goals per total shot attempt with 8.47%.

I think playing on Spezza's wing could help improve his percentages, which are already quite good. This guy could pot 40.

Edit:
Clarkson:
2011-12: 64.41% of 354 shot attempts hit the net; 8.47% went in.
2012-13: 66.91% of 269 shot attempts hit the net; 5.58% went in.

Bobby Ryan:
2011-12: 55.16% of 368 shot attempts hit the net; 8.42% went in.
2012-13: 54.59% of 185 shot attempts hit the net; 5.95% went in.

Just a heads up that we were first in the league in shots for this year.

THe Senators main issue is not being able to capitalize on scoring chances, they need more finish.

Hopefully murray address that this summer and brings in a top 6 guy

Looking at the same numbers:
Nathan Horton:
2011-12: 58.06% of 155 shot attempts hit the net; 10.97% went in (injury-shortened season).
2012-13: 62.64% of 182 shot attempts hit the net; 7.14% went in.

Solid percentages. The problem being that he may have already priced himself out of our range with his postseason play.

I dont doubt he could score 30 goals again, especially with Spezza, but its not like hes playing with scrubs in NJ.

Hes played with the likes of Kovalchuk (very underrated playmaker) Elias, Zajac, Parise, etc. who are all very good players.

Saying he could score 40 reminds me of when SJ fans were saying Heatley would score 60 with Thornton. It just isnt realistic.
