Speculation: 2013 Offseason Thread Part VI: Buyout Season

Slim chance? Ok. The Rangers are not going to keep Richards past next season, no matter how well he does. When he retires early, and he will, the Rangers will incur a large penalty due to cap recapture.

Therefore, the only options are to either buy him out this summer, or next summer. If they wait until next summer, they run the risk of him getting injured and not being able to buy him out. So there really is no choice.

There's no chance of him redeeming himself enough that they'll decide to keep him past next season. And whatever benefit he might provide to this team next year isn't worth the risk of him getting hurt.

Agreed.

Richards is slow and getting slower, he's had 4 straight seasons of declining production. He's well on the wrong side of 30.

Expecting some form of redemption from Richards now is like expecting Redden to be the same player he was 8 years ago.

It's time to cut ties before we hurt ourselves down the road.

Well, me too. That's not the problem. The problem is our GM who might not buy him out. We cannot afford to have a 6 m/y center on our 4th line. This has to be our year.

Buy out Richards
Re-Sign Clowe, McDonagh, Hagelin, Stepan and Zuccarello
Trade Del Zotto for a top6 LW (so we can move Nash to the RW)

Promote Lindberg to our 3rd line

i agree with this.

Anyone interested in Goc or Gordon, they seem like the most realistic players to get.

i like goc, could be a good option for 3C. however our focus should be on locking up mcdonagh stepan and lundqvist, not signing free agents.

We need to sign some free agents. Guys like Gordon and Goc will not affect us being able to lock up our own guys.

well it depends on how crazy the market gets, but i agree they wont affect signing out own guys. i would advise against looking to UFAs until our core has been retained. we are going to have a tough time with the cap as it is, we dont need sather spending it all on free agents.

This isn't a video game. You can't expect Lindberg and Fast to be leading candidates to make the team when they haven't even played on North American ice. You cab't expect CT or JT Miller to make the team either. They both needed a lot of work on their overall game. Miller needs to adjust to the decision making speed of the NHL. He only really had 3-4 solid games. The rest were very average with some bad turnovers thrown in there.

I have high hopes for all four but the reality is we need to look into FA's to fill spots.

Well, FA is not the answer. Previous off-seasons have proven that. If we want to acquire a 3rd line center, we need to trade for it. Burmistrov is still my fav. option for our 3rd line C position but can we acquire him? What would it take?

Signing cheap FA's who don't cost us assets isn't the answer, but trading assets for a player is? Especially Burmistrov? And since when is Burmistrov a true center? And why would we play him as our 3rd line center? That's just crazy. That's poor evaluation.

I prefer to sign cheap FA's, veteran FA's than to sign projects like Burmistrov, which would mean giving up a guy like Del Zotto probably who is by far the better asset/player to have and handing a young inexperienced team to AV and saying 'here do what you can with this roster, we expect a playoff berth.' That's ludicrous. That's not realistic. You guys will be calling for his head in no time.

Sign cheap FA's. Sather will not cave in. He has gotten a lot better since Gorton joined him. Richards was the right move at the time. We all wanted him. Someone was going to pay him that money. We needed a center.

I do trust Sather moving forward with this free agency. And if we are going to make a trade it better be the right one.

Having Briere on a 1 year deal until Lindberg is ready, is something i'd be fine with.

I'd be perfectly fine with this as well. I don't think Briere signs for a lot. In fact being that he will be paid well by the Flyers from his buyout, I could see him being ok with a 1 year deal to earn a better contract moving forward by proving he can stay healthy and produce.

Somebody posted he would like to stay in the area, I am going to assume it's going to be between the Devils and Rangers.

Agreed. It's similar to the risk we took with Frolov. A solid contract for a solid player. Just didn't work out. Hopefully it does with Briere.

I'd imagine Briere gets a two year deal. Not many 36 year olds want to sign a 1 year deal to prove themselves.

I'd choose Clowe without hesitation.
I know I'm in the clear minority but I'd rather have Richards for one more year and then buy him out. I know the risks involved. Richards has been relatively healthy his entire career. You can't fake injuries. If he is cleared to play, he will be bought out. I think it'd be better to keep him for a year than to sign Clowe to a multi-year deal that would just be an awful signing. I do not see him staying healthy. I don't want to pay him anywhere near north of $3.25. That is the most I'doffer him.

I'd hope he chose the rangers.

Difference between the two is obviously Briere is much, much more established.

Ok, that;s fine, I can live with 2 years.

Briere is strictly a RW at this point in his career. I wouldn't mind him if he came cheap on a 1 year deal.

I still want this team to get more physical. Clowe would help on LW. Moving Pyatt for a tougher, more speedy player would be a plus as well.

I get the feeling they will be bringing in a winger this off-season via trade.

predict July 5

Rangers sign Maxime Lappierre 3 year contract 1.8 per year (played for the current Rangers head coach)
Rangers sign Eric Nystrom 3 year 2.0 per year

I just can't get behind Clowe. Too many injuries in such a short period. It'd be one thing if he was on the right side of 30 years of age, but he is not. He has never been a quick skater either. This just reeks of disaster. He doesn't bring speed, is getting slower, his body is aging fast it seems, and he wants decent money with all this. I just can't justify it.

I know Briere is small but he brings more offense and with Gaborik gone, we certainly could use more offense. It would also help the PP. I love what Callahan brings but Briere is by far a more offensive threat than Callahan. Bump Callahan down to the 3rd line and get him a decent 3rd line center to play with. In the new NHL you cannot look at the 3rd line as if it is a checking line. It isn't a demotion for callahan. It just means you have much more depth.

I don't think teams are realistically willing to trade for Pyatt.

I really want Kulemin out of Toronto, but I don't know what they'd want. I have a feeling some Canucks are coming to New York, Raymond and Roy are at the top of my list. If we can get their rights for a pick, go for it.

Kreider-Stepan-Nash
Hagelin-Brassard-Zuccarello
Raymond-Roy-Callahan
Pyatt-Boyle-Dorsett

is a decent forward group. Hopefully CT makes the jump next year, I can imagine him shooting lasers from the left circle on the PP.
