Speculation: 2013 Offseason Thread Part VI: Buyout Season

I fully expect Richards to get bought out. And knowing Sather, I wouldn't be surprised if he already has plans for that money. Maybe giving Stepan a longer term deal is one of those plans.

But there is a chance that Letang will be available. He isn't the best defensively, but we have enough defensive dmen that can cover for him. Offensively, he's much better than anyone we have, and he's a right handed shot.

It's been rumored that he wants 7m per year. That's a bit steep. I'd be more comfortable with 6 mil per year. There's also the question of what we would have to give up to get him. MDZ for sure, but what else? We don't have a 1st or 2nd this year.

Yes, the trade would be in division, but the Rangers were in on the Jordan Staal trade, so I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility.

Edit: Keep in mind that Letang still has 1 year left on his current contract, at a 3.5 mil cap hit. So the new contract would start in 2014-15.

Whats the verdict on Briere on the open market?

I'm having a tough time gauging what type of contract he'll garner?

Any chance he goes for 1 year?

For context, this is what the Cap will look like if we assume a modest YoY growth of 2.5% in HRR:

Season | Revenue | Cap
2013-14 | 3450 | 64.3
2014-15 | 3536 | 64.3
2015-16 | 3625 | 65.64
2016-17 | 3715 | 67.38
2017-18 | 3808 | 69.16
2018-19 | 3903 | 70.98
2019-20 | 4001 | 72.85
2020-21 | 4101 | 74.77
2021-22 | 4203 | 76.73

If we assume a more aggressive growth of 5%:

Season | Revenue | Cap
2013-14 | 3450 | 64.3
2014-15 | 3623 | 65.61
2015-16 | 3804 | 69.08
2016-17 | 3994 | 72.72
2017-18 | 4193 | 76.53
2018-19 | 4403 | 80.56
2019-20 | 4623 | 84.77
2020-21 | 4854 | 89.2
2021-22 | 5097 | 93.86

Are you including the 5% inflation bumper?

You are also assuming that there was no natrual growth from 2011/12 to 2012/13 (ie the benchmark is 3450 for this year). Yes, only half a season was played in 2012/13, but the economy as a whole has grown from 2011/12 to 2012/13 and the last couple of month's has been great for the NHL, and the season we have had this season has attracted fans just like every other season does. To this equation, we can't forget about the negative impact of the lock-out, sure. Its not easy to predict. But to some extent, there is defintiely an accrued growth from time and economy as a whole from 2011/12 to 2012/13 that never will show directly in any bench mark numbers since we don't have any, but that will carry on to the 2013/14 season.

Not taking into account any obmission of the inflation bumper, you still get a 69.08m cap in 2014/15 if that growth was 5% and the growth next season is 5%.

But any account, 5% growth for the NHL is a very low number historically (looking back, the actual avg growth number is closer to 10%).

Look, we just have to wait and see. But don't be suprised if we see fans of some org's outcry in the coming years "ahhh the cap is Xm already, why did we have a lockout again????", as usual.

Re-sign Eminger for his current 750k. Hagelin gets a 2 year 2.1 million contract. Zuccarello a 2 year 1.85 million contract.

If you don't sign Clowe, you're left with nearly 9.5 million for Stepan and McDonagh. That's enough to keep Richards and sign both Stepan and McDonagh to long term contracts.

I think the real decision management is thinking about right now is whether they'd rather have Clowe or Richards. I think they're leaning towards keeping Richards, myself, seeing how he'd do under a new season, new PP coach and given that our center depth isn't exactly world class right now. Brassard is no lock for a top 6 role.

Richards is not a hockey decision. It's a financial decision. If they don't buy him out, it will be a mistake.

As RB mentioned, Briere is eligible for performance bonuses if he takes a 1 year deal. That can be a slippery slope though. Those bonuses don't have to fit under the cap, but if he earns them, we may have to pay all or part of those bonuses from the following year's cap, leaving us less cap space to re-sign other players.

Well, the decision is whether it will be this year or next year. And I think you're mistaken, it's very much a hockey decision. As I showed, you can sign both Stepan and McDonagh to long term contracts and be fine, even with Richards next year. I don't think management is considering the buyout of Richards this year as foregone a conclusion as many here seem to believe.

Leave enough room to pay the bonuses if Briere achieves them. If not then the Rangers have the Richards $ to add another player or two. Briere has battled some injuries the last few years. He had a wrist issue. He is a right handed shot. Can play center and left wing. Briere has 2 years remaining on his Philly contract. $3M and $2M salaries. He made a fortune on his Philly contract. His wife took a good piece of that. Newell Brown likes righties on the PP. 1 year for $2M plus bonuses. He played 70 games in 11-12 for 49 points. 13 points in 11 playoff games. He remains close to his kids in south Jersey.

On a one year, I'd honestly take a waiver on him.

That is if Richards is bought out.

He cant be detrimental and still has his speed, we have the D-Men barring MDZ's occasional stretch flubs to get him the puck. I could see him really opening the ice up for Nash.

Hasn't he only played RW in his career besides center?

no its not, because they can buy him out next year as well.. Now the question is what would the Rangers do if Richards returns to form this year going into next off season? That becomes a hockey decision. If you don't need the space, you can't buy him out on the VERY SLIM OFF CHANCE he gets innjured enough he cant be bought out. Also, who knows what he can do with a more offensive minded coach.

Hagelin (Lindberg/Miller/Boyle) Callahan could potentially be the best 3rd line in the game. It is unfortunate though there is nobody to fill in their spots in the top 6 to make this possible.

If he did get injured it would be devastating though. And with his cap space available the Rangers have more opportunity to lock up McDonagh or Stepan to deals that would eat up some UFA years.

Pretty sure he could announce them now.

The league does not like them announcing trades and such during the finals, especially if it is something large. Which with EDM could be something with Eberle, 7th round pick, Gagner, etc...

Better be knocking on a lot of wood, man.

Yeah. I feel like yesterday was January 19th.

Kinda sucks the Rangers have almost no picks early.
3 third rounders though.

A brief look at their third round draft pick history has to get you excited.

2011 Entry 72 3 Steven Fogarty
2009 Entry 80 3 Ryan Bourque
2008 Entry 75 3 Evgeny Grachev
2008 Entry 90 3 Tomas Kundratek
2006 Entry 84 3 Ryan Hillier
2005 Entry 66 3 Brodie Dupont
2005 Entry 77 3 Dalyn Flatt
2004 Entry 73 3 Zdenek Bahensky

We have 14.5m in space, couldnt we do that anyway even if they made 5-6 each? both Hags and Zucc will be relatively cheap
