MIN talking extension with Clutterbuck but also talking trade involving him. UFA P-M Bouchard won't be back; Matt Cullen probably not back.

Heard from another team that the Blackhawks are shopping center Dave Bolland...

Have to think Alexander Barkov becomes even more appealing to the Lightning after buying out Lecavalier. Would slide right in as #2 center.

Makes sense. Maybe Jones hangs around a while.

#Blackhawks Bowman said club plans to use buyouts on Montador and Olesz.

(2) more UFA's.

Seeing as we have one too many LD (assuming Staal recovers well), we have a need for a top 6 Wing and a youngish RD with PPQB potential. For the sake of argument, if these two trades were on the table, which would you pull the trigger on:

Staal <-> Skinner + McBain

MDZ + Skjei <-> Setoguchi + Brodin

So Bogosian was a sure thing? Gudbranson? Johansen? Connolly? They are all good, young players. And they are all players I would welcome on the Rangers, however we are a few years out from their draft years and really none of them have grasped the responsibility Staal has to date. Are you willing to wait 4-5 years?
I don't think they were on the same level at their own respective drafts as the prospects in this draft are now.

I don't get it. Everyone always is clamoring to draft and develop an electrifying talent, but when we have a prime chance to, they shy away from the cost when the player to be traded has a good chance of walking to the other team in 2 years anyway.

They are all true top-end no-brainer talent. Jones and MacKinnon are a little above Drouin, Barkov, and Nichuskin, but all of them can easily go top three.

Honestly, this or something close to it is always said pre-draft. Yet somehow we wind up with Gilbrt Brules, Benoit Pouliots, Chistovs, Svitovs, Paajarvis, Brassards, Okposos, Colin Wilsons, Sam Gagners, Filatovs, etc.

It may be less likely this year, but the risk is not 0.

Do you know Marc?

Exactly.

It's a valid to criticize trading a player for a draft pick who doesn't pan out, but the opposite can also happen. Every trade is a gamble.

The risk is most certainly not 0, but like you said, it's less likely this year. We definitely need to wait and see what's left at 5, but more than likely, I think we need to take the chance.

The Rangers trade Staal they are confident they can re-sign Girardi.

I haven't been on for a day, been writing paper.

Question! When is the deadline for the buyouts?

While that is true, I would rather have McDonagh and Staal moving forward. Girardi is a bit older.

But then we have a gaping hole on the right. Unless McDonagh or Staal can play the right, we're screwed. And if that's the case, then we can't trade MDZ either, as that would then ruin the left depth. It's a lose lose no matter what if Girardi leaves.

I don't see either trade being a realistic possibility - but especially not the one where Minny trades Brodin. Why the hell would they want to give up Brodin? I wouldn't do that trade if I were Minny even if all I was giving up was Brodin. The guy quietly transitioned very nicely to the NHL this year, has big upside, and was already eating big minutes.

But if we're living in a fantasy land where those two trades are on the table, I take the Brodin trade in a heart beat. Not meant to be down on MDZ or Skjei, but more a comment on how high I am on Brodin; he looks like he has a real shot at being something special.

Lundqvist is one year away from free agency. Staal is a top notch player in his own end with some offensive ability. Trading Marc away for a young guy who may or may not be able to make an impact right away is not only going to hurt the team on D but is a sidestep--maybe even a backward step while we're waiting for this guy to get up to speed. Back to the opening sentence--no Staal, defense not nearly as good, backward step waiting for impact of new guy might give Henrik the idea that we're retooling more than we're trying to win now. More likely he leaves if that's the case. That's a speculation.

If anyone of value gets moved of all our D it should be Del Zotto. He looks to me to be a perennial 45-50 point guy with some defensive issues. He's the Rangers best offensive defenseman but his lack of a hard and accurate shot is going to limit how many points he puts up. He's no Brian Leetch and there are at least 20 defenseman many of who are around his age who are not only better in their own end but more likely year in and year out to produce more offense. I don't think he's worthy of a top 5 pick in this draft but he could put us somewhere between 10 and 15. We have enough bodies on the left side where we could absorb his loss.
