Clowe at 3M is something that should be easily negotiated, the rub is going to be the number of years. If Clowe is wiling to take a discount on the money, he'd probably would want more years.
As much as I want Clowe back, 5 years at 3M? Not sure I'd do that. 3 years at 3M is about as high as I'd go.

Lundqvist is one year away from free agency. Staal is a top notch player in his own end with some offensive ability. Trading Marc away for a young guy who may or may not be able to make an impact right away is not only going to hurt the team on D but is a sidestep--maybe even a backward step while we're waiting for this guy to get up to speed. Back to the opening sentence--no Staal, defense not nearly as good, backward step waiting for impact of new guy might give Henrik the idea that we're retooling more than we're trying to win now. More likely he leaves if that's the case. That's a speculation.

If anyone of value gets moved of all our D it should be Del Zotto. He looks to me to be a perennial 45-50 point guy with some defensive issues. He's the Rangers best offensive defenseman but his lack of a hard and accurate shot is going to limit how many points he puts up. He's no Brian Leetch and there are at least 20 defenseman many of who are around his age who are not only better in their own end but more likely year in and year out to produce more offense. I don't think he's worthy of a top 5 pick in this draft but he could put us somewhere between 10 and 15. We have enough bodies on the left side where we could absorb his loss.

But how would we replace DZ's offensive production on a similar contract?

Seeing as we have one too many LD (assuming Staal recovers well), we have a need for a top 6 Wing and a youngish RD with PPQB potential. For the sake of argument, if these two trades were on the table, which would you pull the trigger on:

Staal <-> Skinner + McBain

MDZ + Skjei <-> Setoguchi + Brodin

You gotta look at it from both team's perspectives when proposing a trade. Why would MIN want to trade Brodin, after the year he's had, and for Del Zotto and a prospect, no less.

Lecavlier is going to get a very real contract. Look at the contracts Holik and Hatcher got after being amnestied.

They need a player like Staal. Physical top 4 dman on a nice contract, plus he's a Staal. That ups his value because of the marketing they can do. Trading Skinner and drafting to replace him would be a lateral move.

Trading Skinner for Staal and drafting a cheaper, younger and healthier player to replace Skinner is a lateral move?

Do you understand carolina's cap situation? They want to clear cap space, not add to it. They aren't going to trade us the #5 for Staal. It doesn't make sense for them.

Interested to see if Carolina trades the 5th pick. Need a top 4 D. Could be part of a package. Told Rutherford is getting lots of calls.

Further to the Carolina tweet. There are financial restrictions the Hurricanes face. Need a top 4 D, but can't pay Letang-like dollars.

Rutherford is a star****er, I'm sure he'd lust after Staal if he was missing an arm.

None of that mentions any intent by Rutherford to trade the pick. It does, however, mention carolina's financial restrictions. But keep deluding yourself if it makes you happy.

Easy. How hard can it be?

Allow McDonagh to get PP time? Stralman? Moore? The Rangers have guys who should be better offensively than they are.

I'm just not a fan of trading MDZ. He put up 40 pts in Torts stifling system. Imagine what he can do with AV.

I'm the one providing tangible evidence from a trusted source. You're the one with your head in the sand. Marc is a top 4 deal on an affordable contract for the next two years.

MDZ is not a good skater. That will always hold him back. After his current contract he is going to get PAID because of the high value of puck movers around the league. He is not on their level but he will be paid like it. He is a LD and he is not as good as McDonagh or Staal.

Easy. How hard can it be?

It's a very intriguing scenario, especially if Nischuskin is available at 7. Although, I do think we also trade Boyle if we sign Lapierre.

I'm just not a fan of trading MDZ. He put up 40 pts in Torts stifling system. Imagine what he can do with AV.

You say this like AV is going to run a significantly more offensive system than Torts did. For that matter, you're also assuming that MDZ would thrive in a much more open system. Seems like far from a guarantee to me. He is slow(er) on his skates, and can be painfully slow/uncertain with his puck moving decisions at times. Neither of those helps a player succeed in an open offensive system.

Not to mention that this perception of AV is not necessarily who he is as a coach. At times, he ran pretty defensive systems with VAN. We won't know anything until we see what he goes with. Honestly, he probably won't even know until he gets a feel for the team after a number of regular season games...

I don't dislike MDZ, and may be with you on not trading him unless the return is too good to turn down. But expecting him - or anyone else for that matter (who isn't still a prospect) - to blow up offensively next season just because of the coaching change is deluded thinking.

What tangible evidence? You posted speculation by Dreger, nothing more. It doesn't say that carolina is considering trading the pick. It doesn't say that Marc Staal is a player they are interested it. These are all just your assumptions.

The one thing it does say, and capgeek agrees, is that they have cap concerns. Trading the 5th overall for Staal doesn't improve that situation. Trading Skinner for Staal does. If I'm Rutherford, that's the deal I'm looking to make.

Well, AV encourages pinching in. If MDZ thrives with that, then I don't think 45-50 points is out of the question. I'd rather wait and see with him. At this point, I'd simply rather trade Staal. Just my opinion.

Only the "shiny new toy" could be the last piece of the puzzle here, while Staal can be let go without drastic consequences.

Where do you guys come up with nonsense like this?

I would definitely look into what Vinny L wants, He's been a steady 50+ point player in less than 82 games no less for the last 3 years despite his production dropping.. would still be a very serviceable #2c, which moves Brass to #3, Stepan/Vinny/Brass/Boyle.

You would look into everybody. That's all you care about. Free agents and trades. Roster shake-ups. Adding pieces.

Side Note: People around here gotta get new material. "Shiny New Toy"? Really? Let's move on from that one already, every other person says it.

It's true. It happens every year. The unknown is always more valuable than the alternative on our board.

Any of the top 5 will contribute next year. Hopefully we can slot them right in the top 9.

All of the top-5 draft picks are going to make the NHL, and contribute next year? Really?

Where have I heard that before...

How do you define value? Someone is going to give him a big deal - for a clearly declining player.

I wouldnt go above 2/8, and I hate the idea of that to be honest.

Value can mean different things... What I mean by value in this context, he's a second line center. That's reasonable to think. Pay him like one but with the mindset he's aging - so you don't give him more than 2 or 3 years.

He's going to score 50+ points, will add great depth down the middle and he'll improve the power play. Those are reasonable expectations.

Give him a reasonable contract. I think 2 years/$8 million is good for a player like Lecavalier.

Someone probably will give him a big contract. I'll agree to that. If not, and if the demands are fair, go for it.

I've posted my arguments. This is the deepest top 5 in recent memory, Staal is in my opinion more expendable than MDZ, and any of that top 5 fill a need.

Your trusted source is spewing hypothetical ideas and possibilities. Like he does throughout the year. The evidence you think you have is someone's thoughts.

Holy **** it's going to be a long offseason.
