We could conceivably trade Boyle for a more rugged second/third pairing defenseman to eat up minutes. You can't say that forward corps isn't appealing though.

Like who though? Good dmen who can eat 15-20 minutes against top lines consistently are hard to find.

Personally I'm not head over heels for Drouin. Maybe that's why I'm not completely sold.

I like Nichuskin a lot, but I'm not sure that he puts the forward corps over the top in the next 2-3 years which is what I feel he would need to do to justify that big of a setback on D. When he's 23? Yea sure. What does that mean for the Rangers window though.

I think this will be a bigger deal than many people are taking into account. If players like Richards, Briere, VL, etc. are bought out. That floods the market with good, talented, albeit older players. I think it drives prices down and there will be more bargains available this off-season for teams with cap space.

and those 3 are already going to be getting paid for doing nothing, so I wonder exactly how much they will command?

He is? Are you his doctor? It's been reported that his eye may never be 100% back to where it was. He's played only 1 game since he got hurt. No one has any idea if he'll be able to return to his former level. If you don't think that hurts his value, you're crazy.

No, it only hurts the chances of you getting your precious top 5 pick.

You sound like the desperate one. Who says Staal even wants to go there? Who says carolina wants him? You're saying all this based on an assumptions which may not be true.

Sorry, but it's the truth. The only reason you want to trade Staal now is for the #5 pick. If they had the 20th pick, you wouldn't even be suggesting that we trade him.

Staal says he'll play like he used to. That's good enough for me.

I'm not desperate at all, I'm just looking at one scenario. A scenario where we can see the tangible pieces. Thats one scenario. You're denial that its a possibility is just as crazy as what I'm saying. When guys like brooks and friedman come out and say things, then I listen. And who says Carolina wants him? Now you're just making yourself look foolish. Not only is he a Staal, but he's the top-4 D-man on a sweetheart contract for two years they've been desperately looking for.

You're ******* right I would rather have #5 over the #20, who wouldn't, The 20th isn't worth Staal, but he IS worth the 5. That #5 is a valuable piece, and whoever that player is will play next year on this team if we got it.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: If our front office can **** up a top 5 pick in this particular draft, we have no hope for the future except to keep signing high priced FAs to stupid contracts.

It's also about getting someone who can help win now.. They might be serviceable players, but how long until they really break out? Whats the Rangers window? etc. things have to be taken into consideration. Personally, Skinner despite a big cap hit (though its lessened with Staal going the other way at least for the next 2 years), is the guy I'd get from Carolina, because he plays a position we need, he's a goal scorer, and he is also very young as well just turning 23.

I'd take the #5 if Drouin or Jones fell.. but good luck with that happening.

I think they'd be looking for a more stabilizing presence than Del Zotto. I.e., a shutdown guy to pair with Faulk. Staal makes more sense for Carolina, and the reasons go beyond his last name. He's the kind of player they need, and he's cost controlled for two more years.

I think if Staal was going, it would be Skinner+ coming back. Skinner plus the 5th overall if we sent another piece as well. If Del Zotto is going, I think Skinner for Del Zotto would be close to a straight swap. Just my opinion though. There's a lot of risk involved in taking on Skinner and his contract. He's undersized and has multiple concussions. He's at the height where players are going to often hit him in the head just because their shoulder is naturally at that height. It's dangerous.

****, If we drafted Drouin/Nichuskin with that pick, I'd flip Skinner for another D-man.

Any of the top 5 will contribute next year. Hopefully we can slot them right in the top 9.

As for Boyle, I'm sure there's a deal to be made somewhere. He's one of those players that every team can use. If we can sign Lapierre, Boyle is expendable.

Rangers remain undecided on Brad Richards buyout. As is the case with Lecavalier, teams are eager to see Richards hit the market.

What about Nichuskin? He's right there with them. Do not want Skinner, we need to get bigger and tougher in the top 6.

Didn't Sather say he decided a few days ago but wasn't revealing what his decision was?

Some team will overpay for VL4. We don't have the cap space to make him a competitive offer, and frankly, I think it's the wrong move anyway.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see Vinny and Richards end up on the same team when all is said and done.

Best case is that you move to #5, and can convince Nashville to swap picks and let you take Jones if he falls to #4. If that fails, I'd honestly entertain dropping down a bit. I think there are two NHL ready defenders in the top-10 of this draft. Jones and Ristolainen. If you miss out on Jones and Edmonton wants Monahan, see what MacT is willing to pony up to leap-frog Calgary to guarantee they get him. Then again, I'm going off my own top-10 and I have Ristolainen at #7 ahead of Lindholm and Nurse.

Ristolainen fills a lot of needs for this team, and I think at #7 he'd be the BPA. Big, mobile RHD. One of the top puck movers in the draft and has a cannon of a shot. Isn't overly physical in open ice, but can lay the body against the boards and can get mean in front of the net.

Staal's value is at an all time low right now... There's no point in trading him outside of taking far under value.

If you are looking to trade anyone, Del Zotto and Girardi are the only two worth discussing in my mind.

Maybe. At least one, probably many more, of these guys are going to turn down larger contracts for smaller ones in places they really want to play. Some will definitely take another big payday, as well. We don't know which one of those Lecavalier is.

I think the answer to this question is no, but do teams still own the rights to the players they bought out until the FA period starts? In other words, can TBL trade Lecavalier's rights to another team before July 5?

As I said, I think the answer is no, but someone maybe can confirm that.

I don't believe there are any rights to own. Once they're bought out, the contract is terminated and they are free agents (after waivers).
