Why not? You don't think teams project out? We've went over this before. Right now you get 110% of his value as opposed to 50% if you wait. Overpayment now, underpayment/nothing later.

I'd ask where you are getting those numbers from, but I already know.

First, his value isn't 110% right now because of the injury. Second, his value isn't going to drop to 50% simply because he only has 1 year left on his contract instead of 2.

If Staal comes back healthy, stays healthy and plays well next year, his value will be much higher than it is right now, regardless of his contract situation. How many years he has left on his contract doesn't mean much if he wants to go to carolina and carolina wants him. Jordan only had 1 year left on his contract and that didn't hurt his value at all.

The one and only reason you want to make this deal now is because carolina has the 5th overall pick, and the shiny new toy is more appealing to you than the one you have.

Only the "shiny new toy" could be the last piece of the puzzle here, while Staal can be let go without drastic consequences.

Man if I had a nickel for every time the Rangers nabbed that last piece...

Losing the teams best defenseman does not have "drastic consequences"?

I had a dream last night that we traded Seidenberg for the first overall from Nashville.

I didn't understand it, either.

I would definitely look into what Vinny L wants, He's been a steady 50+ point player in less than 82 games no less for the last 3 years despite his production dropping.. would still be a very serviceable #2c, which moves Brass to #3, Stepan/Vinny/Brass/Boyle.

Normally I would agree with you. I'm always a stickler for proven talent over potential anyday.

That being said, we haven't developed a legitimate game breaking forward since god knows when.

Either Drouin or Nichushkin will be that guy, and both of them will play in the NHL THIS year. Will they be gamebreakers from the get-go? No. But they will contribute. We'd be dealing from a position of strength (LD) for a position of weakness (LW). Gotta give to get. It's the right move to make.

I said could be the last piece. Assuming we also get a righty d-man and an upgraded 4th line, as well as this, the team looks pretty decent and competitive to me.

Kreider-Stepan-Nash
Drouin/Nichuskin-Brassard-Callahan
Hagelin-Lindberg/Miller-Zuccarello
Nystrom-Lapierre-Dorsett
Asham

McDonagh-Girardi
Del Zotto-Stralman
Moore-McBain/Blum/Someone from trading Boyle.
Eminger
McIlrath

Seems pretty nice to me, on paper at least.

Staal is fine. But if you wait a year his value does go down.
Who is to say that Carolina would even need a top 4 D-man then? Or have a top 5 pick in a draft where the top end is VERY good? The time to get the most out of that team is now. They are desperate.

Side Note: People around here gotta get new material. "Shiny New Toy"? Really? Let's move on from that one already, every other person says it.

2nd and 3rd pair D could hold up in the regular season but would be abused in the playoffs, IMO. Could very well force us to continue to have to give McD-Girardi 30+ min a night in close games. That is a huge issue. Just because we "survived" without Staal doesn't mean it is a good long term strategy.

Staal is fine.

He is? Are you his doctor? It's been reported that his eye may never be 100% back to where it was. He's played only 1 game since he got hurt. No one has any idea if he'll be able to return to his former level. If you don't think that hurts his value, you're crazy.

But if you wait a year his value does go down.

No, it only hurts the chances of you getting your precious top 5 pick.

You sound like the desperate one. Who says Staal even wants to go there? Who says carolina wants him? You're saying all this based on assumptions which may not be true.

Side Note: People around here gotta get new material. "Shiny New Toy"? Really? Let's move on from that one already, every other person says it.

Sorry, but it's the truth. The only reason you want to trade Staal now is for the #5 pick. If they had the 20th pick, you wouldn't even be suggesting that we trade him.

We could conceivably trade Boyle for a more rugged second/third pairing defenseman to eat up minutes. You can't say that forward corps isn't appealing though.

I want something more proven coming back if we're downgrading on defense with trading Staal, not giving our management a top pick who might not know what to do with it.

That's what would make me think more is wanted because of that injury risk being heightened. What do you think hypothetically if DZ goes there?

I'm not supporting this but I'm just seeing.

I think they'd be looking for a more stabilizing presence than Del Zotto. I.e., a shutdown guy to pair with Faulk. Staal makes more sense for Carolina, and the reasons go beyond his last name. He's the kind of player they need, and he's cost controlled for two more years.

I think if Staal was going, it would be Skinner+ coming back. Skinner plus the 5th overall if we sent another piece as well. If Del Zotto is going, I think Skinner for Del Zotto would be close to a straight swap. Just my opinion though. There's a lot of risk involved in taking on Skinner and his contract. He's undersized and has multiple concussions. He's at the height where players are going to often hit him in the head just because their shoulder is naturally at that height. It's dangerous.

I wanted to trade Poti for Ruutu during the lockout and I was ridiculed. I wanted to package Prucha and Kondratiev for Ruutu after the lockout and was ridiculed. Then I was laughed at for suggesting a trade of Immonen and Tyutin for Ruutu by NYR fans on the trade boards.

And now you guys want to trade a guy who may potentially remain our #1 d-man, and among the best in the league, for a player who has never been the same after back surgery, and isn't 80% of the player we could've traded extra parts for a few years back

I never said I would trade Staal for Ruutu. I simply said he's likely one of the players Carolina would look to move.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: If our front office can **** up a top 5 pick in this particular draft, we have no hope for the future except to keep signing high priced FAs to stupid contracts.

Maybe this at least drops the prices on some of the other UFA centers.

I think this will be a bigger deal than many people are taking into account. If players like Richards, Briere, VL, etc. are bought out. That floods the market with good, talented, albeit older players. I think it drives prices down and there will be more bargains available this off-season for teams with cap space.
