where is this myth that zucc is a terrible deffensive player coming from? hes not great, he will never win a selke, but he isnt as horrible as some people here make him out to be. is it because he is small? a lot of people were saying he is too small to play in the league. now that he has proven them wrong are they just saying he is a liability defensively? this antizucc bs is rediculous.

He's good for what he is.
But unlike, say, Callahan, who plays HUGE for his size, when it comes to that next level of excellence, Zuc does not have enough speed. He does not have that breakaway quick step to be lethally effective on offense, and his is adequate speed on defense coupled w/height and weight disadvantage.

I give him credit and say he's better than his own range, but that's a fraction.
I give him props and say ok + for another inch or so.

But the guys 6'2" and up have a huge advantage.
I'm not talking hate.

It is the old sports adage: the good big man usually beats the good little man.

Zucc isn't bad defensively he just gets pushed around because of his size

Ah, just like the pitcher who isn't a bad pitcher but gets routinely knocked around because his fastball is mediocre?

Don't get me wrong, I came to appreciate his offensive gifts in the second half of last year, but he remains a defensive liability due to his size no matter how hard he tries.

:handclap:

The size issue cant be brushed over. Its there, and its a liability.

If Kreider ever gets it together we could have 2.power forwards with him and Nash.

the softest power forwards that does not play physical, with grit or drop the gloves from time to time... these players are snipers not power forwards.. just because they have size does not make the power forwards.. they dont play like power forwards play like Hartnell, Backes, Lucic, Horton type....

You don't need size or speed to be good defensively, see Stepan, Derek.

Zuccarello is hardly a great defensive player, but he's better than majority of players in the lineup at that aspect.

As good as he is, Nash is not a power forward... he plays 5" and 50 lbs. smaller than he is... Kreider doesn't appear much different (aside from in the corners). Our only real power forward is Clowe, and he'll probably be gone soon.

It's not even just the size, Zuccarello's positioning isn't great either. He'll occasionally neglect to cover the point when a d-man pinches.

Ideally, I'd love to use Zuccarello as a PP specialist with less ES time, but we don't really have the depth to do that.

The thing is, Zuccarello hardly got knocked around this season. And a pitcher without a fastball can still pitch. Look at a guy like Bartolo Colon with mid 80's Fastball constantly outperforming a guy like Andrew Miller, who can gun 100 MPH at times. That is comparable to Zuccarello and Kreider.

I disagree. I saw what Nash did playing in Columbus, he could throw some huge hits and also would drop the gloves and defend his teammates. I wonder if it was first season in NY jitters (and it was still a very good season production wise). I admit he did play a little tentative but I think we may just see the guy I watched in Columbus this coming year. Though, he can't really play the power forward role here he's our only threat we can't have him getting hurt by getting into fights for no reason.

so reading buyouts have to go on waivers first. I doubt anyone gets picked up but I guess it could happen. Teams could take a look for a yr then if they want use a buyout the next yr even. Neverk now may happen on a player

funny how TO and TB cant do a Vinny deal then TO buys out then Lightning resign . wonder if NHL said the same thing on waivers, pick up then buyout

Nash does not play physical on a consistent basis to be called a power forward. he hits once a month it seems like... doesnt go to the corners and doesnt screen the goalie.... power forwards are players who play physical, with grit, drop the gloves and be aggressive at times. Nash does not do this at all. Nash is more of a sniper than power forward.. Ryan Callahan is more of a power forward than Rich Nash is

Really? I got the exact opposite when I was watching him. He seemed to be coasting like modern day Alexei Kovalev in his final seasons in Columbus in the games I watched.

Break up day news: Bergeron still under observation at hospital, Jagr/Ference likely won't return to Bs, Horton may need shoulder surgery.

Bergeron might have a collapsed lung or they are worried about his lung.

Boston has cap issues. Rask will cost a fortune.

Bergeron has small hole in lung, per Chiarelli.

If he was baseball player,he would be out for a year.

Final seasons yes prob tired of losing maybe? His early seasons he would do all that. That's why I wanted him so bad. He was a seriouspower fforward with scoring ability to boot. I've watched him for a while

You know this is one area where I think Sather does a decent job. Coyle, Foligno and Matthias have a chance to be special players. I'd trust in Gorton, Clark and Sather choosing the right one from the three.

So Del Zotto straight up for Coyle is not a good deal in your opinion? Just asking.

Thanks for your feed back. I'm inclined to think that Coyle will pan out as a much more effective player than Yogan. I think you make some good points above, but I still think the Rangers need to add a player like this sooner rather than later. The problem is that when a player like Coyle rounds into form your chances of getting him with out gutting your depth go way down.

If Sather & Co. made the move sooner I'd be for it. That's how bad we need this type of player, imo.
