So, Poile said this morning that he's attempting to trade the rights to Jon Blum, who will not be qualified. I've been a fan of his for a while, but he's definitely regressed. I'd hope the Rangers would consider giving him a 1 year deal to see if he can rekindle his game. At the very least he'd be a good option to bolster the D in Hartford.

Either Blum or McBain would work for me.

I think Blum is actually going to rebound from his slump.
His shooting % fell to 3.6 from 12.%, don't think it will stay that low.
His possession numbers actually improved this season over last season, but the problem is the expectations were sky high for Blum entering this season.

I'm pretty sure Staal was allowed to pass the puck under Torts.

Yeah, up along the boards to a winger standing still waiting to tip the puck into the attacking zone. That's exactly what I ment... Not.

Jim Cerny has a story on the Rangers website about the AV hiring

With Rick Nash at his disposal---along with the likes of Ryan Callahan, Derek Stepan, Derick Brassard, Carl Hagelin, and Chris Kreider, among others up front, and some skilled puck movers on the back end---Vigneault has the high end offensive players he needs to allow for more creativity this upcoming season. Friday he repeatedly referred to the fact that the Rangers had two solid lines that can generate consistent offense.

"I will use my offensive players more in the offensive zone...it's the right place for them to start and gives them more opportunities for them to have success, and then those other players are put in the right situation, too," Vigneault explained. "My job is to win games, get the most out of our players, so I need to put them in positions to succeed."

Someone is missing.

Callahan and Hagelin "high-end offensive players"?

Ew. Kreider has the tools, but he hasn't proven anything yet. Would honestly put Zuccarello in there before any of those three.

Still think this team needs another goal scoring winger.

Exactly, Jim Cerny is simply another mouthpiece for this organization passed along by Sather and co.

Rangers get Ruutu, Rask and 5th overall
Canes get Staal, Boyle, Christian Thomas and Brady Skjei

A goal scoring LW is an absolute must. The biggest need of the offseason. Though I dont know if Id trade a current roster player to do it unless its fool proof. Im interested to see what the buyout market looks like.

I believe Blum can rebound nicely too. The team has taken on one successful reclamation project already in Stralman and a half-one in Moore and both have been incredibly successful. Blum would just be another solid, NHL capable Defenseman and one team can never have too many of those. I'm all for it. IMO

I would trade for Blum's rights. A change of scenery could really help him.

3rd round pick. Don't think I'd offer more then that, though.

I'd do the 5 and one, or some combination of the following players:
Murphy, Rask, McBain, Tlusty

While I wouldn't call Callahan a high-end offensive player he did pot 29 goals in 11/12. If put in the right situation there's no reason why he can't do that again. He wont hesitate to go in the dirty areas.

I'm salivating at the thought of a young forward with talent like Drouin or the name that starts with an N that I can never spell. In last year's draft, they both woulda went #2 easy, and possibly #1. Especially Drouin.

Now that I've sobered up:

Staal for #5+Rask

Kreider-Stepan-Nash
Drouin-Brassard-Zucc
Hagelin-Lindberg-Callahan
Pyatt-Boyle-Dorsett

McDonagh-Girardi
Del Zotto-Stralman
Moore-McIlrath/UFA

and we'll have Fast, Miller, Rask, and CT waiting in the wings. That's depth. Those guys can play 3rd and 4th line. Not scrubs like Pyatt, Asham, Mashinter, Newbury.etc. That trade would set us up for a long time.

Our forwards would be pretty much set. Our future top 3 LWs would be Kreider, Drouin, Hagelin. All young.

Top 3 RWs would be Nash, Zucc, Callahan. If the FO feels they want to get bigger, swap Zucc for Miller.

We still have Rask, Fast, and Thomas sitting as wing depth. They could play the 4th line, and fill in for injuries when needed.

Center depth is interesting. If Brassard can stay consistent and play like he did with us, we're fine. If not, we need a #2.

I think Lindberg is going to be the perfect long-term #3 center for us.

LHD depth is more than fine. McDonagh, MDZ, Moore, and Skjei waiting in the NCAA.

RHD is a bit different. Girardi and McIlrath are long-term fixtures on this team. Don't get me wrong, I'm not underrating Stralman. He was our most consistent D-man this year. He's just redundant in our long-term plans. We still need a #1 RHD that can be a PPQB. After this trade, that's all we need really.

I don't think Drouin drops anywhere past #3. It's definitely more likely that Nichushkin is there at that spot. Also a LW, different type of player, but still someone who can most likely step in and play right away.

EDIT: If the Avs actually do wind up not taking Jones and Florida passes on him as well for Drouin/Barkov/Nichushkin, there's a good chance he drops to #5.. which solves the #1, RHD, PPQB issue. Either way, after the draft we'd still have one hole that needs to be filled.

If Carolina wants Marc, the Jordan trade is the measuring stick of their offer as far as I'm concerned.

Jordan Staal (with 1 year remaining on his contract prior to UFA) returned the 8th overall pick in the 2012 draft, Brandon Sutter (youngish 3rd/2nd line center), Brian Dumoulin (7.5c prospect according to HF at the time).

In return for Marc I'd be looking for something along the lines of the 5th overall pick in the 2013 draft + Jamie McBain (youngish 3rd/2nd pairing defenseman who struggled a bit this year) + Victor Rask or equivalent prospect (~7.5c prospect according to HF).

Without the eye issue, Marc is a more valuable piece than Jordan. However, the difference due to the eye concerns is made up in the fact that Marc is under contract for two years with a great cap hit rather than one year. The 5th overall pick this year is definitely more valuable than the 8th last year, but Brandon Sutter is also definitely more valuable than McBain.

Our defense is undoubtedly worse this year after such a move, but we would be picking up two valuable pieces for the future in the 5th overall and Rask. However, the following is nothing to sneeze at:

McDonagh - Girardi
Del Zotto - Stralman
Moore - McBain
Eminger/other 7th dman

If Carolina doesn't want to pay that price, I'm more than happy to have Marc on our roster. In fact, I hope he stays on it long-term.

I whole heartedly agree with this trade and Defensive roster. The rangers played with the same if not worse defensive pairing for most of this season. If we can get that return for staal i say pull the trigger

I actually have no concern over our lack of picks and despite a #5 looking mighty good, I don't want to trade much away.

Blum would be a great pickup. He's a righty and still VERY young.

It's players like him and Strachan that won't make much money that teams invest in and it's low cost high reward. Same for a guy like Aliu.

The new NHL it's all about finding value like the Methiots, Moulsons, and Stralmans of the world.

I don't know if it's worth a third for Blum but if he's not tendered 110% sign him.

I still don't think Staal has much trade value right now even to Carolina with the uncertainty of his injury status.

I don't think DZ has top 5 value either, maybe top 15.

Absolutely. If Jones drops to 5, take him and run away laughing all the way home.

Just as you said, we'd "just" need a top-6 LW.

And again, just as you said, I'd have no problem taking Nichushkin at 5 if both Drouin and Jones go in the top 3. Still a top-quality LW that can step in right away.

One hole either way.
