Speculation: 2013 Offseason Thread Part IV: SCF, end. Trades, begin.

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. Really? He's been badmouthed all over the place, and I'm not talking about HFBoards. He's lost a step and just doesn't really care.

They are desperately trying to get rid of him. Wouldn't want him anywhere near this team.

Agreed. Pyatt, Dorsett, Boyle, Powe, Asham are 4th liners. The top 9 is completely dreadful though. That won't be fixed in one offseason however.

Interested to see if Carolina trades the 5th pick. Need a top 4 D. Could be part of a package. Told Rutherford is getting lots of calls.
 
It would be awesome to trade Staal for the 5th pick. I like the guy, but I think he's damaged goods at this point. And somehow, miraculously Seth Jones drops at the 5th spot.

I have to say, I'm excited about the prospect of Nichushkin, Drouin or MacKinnon a Ranger, though we'd have to be lucky to land one of them at #5.

I wouldn't say we'd be lucky to land Nichuskin at #5.

Could perhaps get Jones if the top-3 goes Mac/Barkov/Drouin. I think Nashville would opt for Monahan/Nich over Jones.

Agreed. Only Boyle and maybe Dorsett. However the 4th line, while being worrisome is hardly comparable to the deficiencies on defense and the top 9. Those are bigger holes to fill. The 4th line is a much easier fix.

Disagree we could move del Zotto for a top 6 guy and sign one and the Rangers depth becomes instantly better, u just have no faith in sather and can't say I blame u lol

That probably makes the Rangers a good team, but I hardly see them as cup contenders with only one addition of a 2nd line winger. They need to revamp their forward core.
 
I there there is a slight chance Drouin is there at 5. Hell, I think theres a chance Jones is there at 5. Never really know.

This. Not sure I'd go for Monahan that early, but really, I'd be ecstatic if we had the 5th OV pick.

The problem is that all three of those guys are on bubble or rebuilding teams. It would take overpayment to acquire one of them. We're better off being patient with Yogan or going high risk/reward on a guy in the 3rd round.

I know everyone's always about Staal to Car or DZ to Edm, but what about DZ to Car?
 
Carolina has 7.5M in cap space RIGHT NOW with 17 players only signed for next year.. Even less, because apparently they are a "budget" team if reports are right that they want to be around 61M. They are NOT trading the #5 pick for a defensemen (albeit very good) making 4M which is still a great cap hit for Staal, they will also not move Tlusty who is on an ELC contract for him either. It just doesnt make sense for them to do that financially, think about it.
 
I doubt the Canes would trade the #5 pick before seeing who is on the board. No chance they risk trading the pick for Staal, and then watch Jones slip to us at #5.

IMO, Jones is the best player in this draft. If he slipped beyond #2 I'd be blown away. Realistically, you'd be looking at one of Nichushkin or Drouin, I think. Whichever one Tampa passes on.

A top-5 pick is going to carry a hefty cap hit regardless.
