Hopefully this will put the JJ trade rumors to bed. He's part of the solution...not the problem.

@Aportzline: #CBJ GM Jarmo Kekalainen on rumors of D Jack Johnson trade to Pittsburgh: "It's silly. I don't usually repond to this kind of stuff, but ...

@Aportzline: "... this is just silly. I went to watch a game. (Pens GM) Ray Shero is a friend of mine."

Now, with that said, I don't honestly believe his visit was totally innocent. I'm sure they may have discussed the availability of some players. I'm not so naive that I don't believe that.

This is fantastic. This sort of thing was a real problem for JMFJ in LA and having our GM step up and say that the trade rumors are Bunk sets a great tone for the rest of the organization. Well done GM.

Good to hear. My guess is that Pittsburgh is looking at one of the Jackets' many second line left wings - Nick Foligno, RJ Umberger, Vinny Prospal ... anyone to play alongside Malkin or Crosby. They have a gluttony of young defense prospects, many of whom would be nice to have (Scott Harrington...!!!) ... but, it would just be speculation.

Then whey did our guy go watch their game?

I'm not buying it either. He's been on the job all of 2 in a half weeks and he's only been with the team for a week in a half, its fair to assume he has quite of bit of "organizational" stuff to continue sifting through that he likely wouldn't have time to go to some random game in another city just to watch it. If it was just him going to watch the game, ok, but others went too (MacFarland, Patrick, (rumored) Davidson).

I wonder if realignment would have any influence on trading partners. I suppose it could change the dynamic if we were going to the East.

Aside from that, I would be surprised to see any CBJ player with an NMC/NTC refuse a trade to a team making a serious move toward the playoffs. Anybody who says no to a trade to a team with real playoff potential is likely resigning himself to 2-4 years of waiting to have that playoff experience here in Cbus.

Vinnie may be the first player we've had who could be that Tkachuk-type rental. He could be just the right piece for a team trying to zero in their roster for a deep playoff run. I could even see him bringing a late-round first if a buyer were desperate enough.

The way Vinny is playing right now, plus being on a one year contract, he certainly is going to attract a lot of attention and SHOULD garner a first round pick.

I think we are reading far too much into this. Sure, he went there for more than visiting an old friend, but I don't see anything to suggest anything beyond a simple scouting exercise and bring along your new right hand man. Perhaps to get to know him better and see if you want him to remain your right hand man.

I know if I were GM I would be taking trips up to Detroit and Pitt fairly frequently. That is Eastern and Western teams within easy reach.

It shouldn't. You make the best trade to help your team. You shouldn't worry what it does to the other team. IMO.

TK, are you on a bad acid trip? I can't think of any other reason you would suggest a 5th round pick for Vinny.

A first seems extreme. A fifth seems more extreme. A second seems quite possible.

The Tkachuk option is really interesting to me. That said, one thing that just popped in my head about Vinny and the "Gentlemen's Agreement" was his excitement that it would keep him in hockey "long after his playing days were over", not to mention planting roots here for his family.

If the agreement and his long-term job security is thrown out the window (which is so horrifically stupid on so many levels that I start to question my fandom of this team if it happens), does Vinny get pissed, accept a trade, walk out the door with one finger in the air and not come back? Or, similarly, does he reject every trade, boxing out the opportunity for the 1st/2nd/whatever he gets in return as a rental, which would be a part of the Tkachuk-style move?

A second for Vinny seems most reasonable. But at the most unreasonable time of year (the deadline) don't be surprised to see him go for a late first. Heck, Paul Gaustad went for a first.

Heck we got a 1st for Adam Foote, and Colorado held all the cards since that is the only place he would play.

In theory I agree with you but in reality I think most teams don't want to trade guys that hey will have to face on a regular basis. Division most unlikely, then conference. Of course if you're doing the Russell for Nikitin type trades not that big a deal. Remember all the hub bub here when it was mentioned about Nash and the Wings? I don't think that kind of a trade happens very often.

Doubt we'd have any use for a Kennedy level guy.

The team I see as our most natural trade partner is Edmonton. Not necessarily at the deadline, because we are both rebuilding, but because our lineups are imbalanced in the opposite ways. Edmonton has no grit in the top six, and they lose a lot of battles. It looks like they don't care out there, but I think its a lineup issue - Ryan Nugent Hopkins is rarely going to beat a Dubinsky/Foligno type of guy in a puck battle. Columbus on the other hand will win most of the battles (maybe its hard work too, but our guys are stronger), but we don't have topline shooting and playmaking to take advantage of our possession. On their boards some folks are discussing an Umberger + for Hemsky kind of deal.

I've watched a half dozen Oiler games this year, and almost all of the BlueJacket games, and I must say that of the two imbalanced teams the Jackets are a lot more fun to watch. There are some things to be thankful for as Jacket fans.

By losing 4-1 to Calgary, San Jose has now gone over a month (February 5) without scoring more than 2 goals in a game.

In their first 5 games, they scored 4+ each time out (23 total). They've scored 28 goals in the 17 games since (1.65 GPG).

I bring this up only because that window to contend may be slamming shut on the Sharks as we speak, and the chances of them going all-in on one final shot are as good as the chances of them blowing it up at the deadline and beginning the rebuild.

I think it's more likely that they try to load up for a final run at the Cup. Wilson emptied the team's cupboard for short-term gain, either he wins it all or he's dumped in Oakland.

What do you think it would take to bring Pavelski to Columbus?
