I'd be into purcell too if he could be had for a first + brassard/umberger + nikitin/savard/wisniewski, or something comparable. he is 27, on a good contract, and looks like he can be a 60 point set-up guy even on a less offensively-minded team. I don't think trading any of tyutin/JJ/murray/erixon/moore/prout for anything less than top quality offensive potential is a good idea though.

Ouch. The only way I'd trade away that much is for a forward who is a clear upgrade on Brassard. Purcell only looks a bit better, and I don't know how well he'd produce if he wasn't playing with Tampa's key guys.

If cammalleri does get picked up, I hope it is for the LA first or two seconds and a middling D prospect because the rangers and ours don't seem worth it.

Cammalleri would be a big upgrade for us, but he has one more ($7 million) year on his contract and then who knows if he'd stay. It's not the kind of deal that works for a team at the stage the Jackets are at. Maybe I'd try to get him for Savard + 2nd.

My comments bolded.

No way would I make either of those trades.

Sure looks like any trades would be with the Buffalo Sabres if they are going to happen. They look like the only team looking to deal with assets left and, for what it is worth, Porty has suggested both Stafford and Pominville could be of interest.

I'll honestly be very surprised if Jarmo does anything of significance at the deadline, especially anything involving the 1st round picks we have.

Looks like a boring night for us...

@Aportzline: Don't expect anything tonight from #CBJ, but one call can change all. #CBJ GM Jarmo Kekalainen: "I'm still attached to my cellphone."

No surprise here:

@Aportzline: This will surprise exactly no one ... but the first-round pick the #CBJ are dangling is the one previously owned by #LAKings.

And finally...

@Aportzline: RT @nateosu29: @Aportzline You think Pominville and/or Stafford are realistic? / They make a lot of sense, yes. But have not been told that.

I still think we should do nothing or be sellers. I don't want us to trade any draft picks, but if we are going to, they will have more value at the draft, IMO.

#CBJ are danging a first-round draft pick (previously #LAKings pick) to acquire scoring help, but it WILL NOT be a 'rental' player.

Wouldn't it make more sense to stand-pat, maybe trade someone like Aucoin, and then try and get Bobby Ryan at the draft?

make more sense? sure...but you ahve to look at it from both sides, they're trying to run a business, its bad for business to tick off a majority of fans that see you 1point out of the playoffs and not trying to go for it...you kinda have a problem...

some of us see the forest thru the trees and wouldn't mind that...i just hope we choose a plan and stick with it...

There's also a fallback option, which is "everyone else paid through the nose to upgrade, but the market wasn't there for us to make a move. Brick by brick while pointing north."

Making a move at the draft may make sense for a team shopping picks, because teams tend to start coveting players available in the draft.

It may help also that teams will be in cap trouble heading into next year and thus, willing to deal off some of their talented players for draft picks. One example of this may be Roberto Luongo ... while the Canucks can afford to keep him for now, having as much money locked up with 14 players as they do next year, they have almost no option but to resolve their goaltending situation.

This is where a team like Columbus can cash in. A talented young forward may be available - particularly if it's a player that's looking for a raise.

the scoring gap between the two this year (26pts versus 18pts) and last (65pts versus 41pts) seems significant to me. Purcell has played for the most part with lecavalier I believe, and significantly outscored him, so I wouldn't say he's particularly reliant on his linemates (at least not to the extent brassard was with nash/voracek for his 47pt season). Purcell also scored at a very high pace in the playoffs and AHL.

I think a late 1st makes up the difference between a 1st line quality winger and 2/3rd line center, who can't win faceoffs or move to the wing, and who hasn't shown any recent progress (of the upward kind). that's my two cents.

I still think your original proposal was too much, but you've persuaded me that Purcell is a serious upgrade over Brassard. I had Purcell's production written off as a consequence of playing with stars.

I think you and Mayor are right. It makes more sense for him to have the picks at the draft and wait for some cap-squeezed teams to have to make some moves. It seems like he will more leverage by waiting. I don't expect any of our #1 picks to go anywhere today.
