Should have added :sarcasm:

Sorry

No I understand you were sarcastic. I was adding onto what you said.

Samkow said:
Once again, Goloubef doesn't have as much value as most on here think, given what similar defensemen have gone for this year. And JAM has minimal value.

Read isn't going to be traded for a package of spare parts. Not nearly enough.

I'll agree with Goloubef, but Read's value isn't much more than a solid defensive prospect capable of playing bottom pairing NHL minutes right now + a solid forward prospect.

Not that I think I could get Philly fans to agree to the proposed deal anyways. They obviously would disagree and say that Read has to be packaged with someone else in return for a #1 defensemen.

And then I would roll my eyes and continue on my way.

Nikitin is the one guy I keep coming back to in my mind as well.

He has 1 year left on his contract, and we appear to be talented, deep, and young on the blue line. Goloubef has been solid in his time up this year, as has Prout and of course Erixon...and then there is that Murray kid :)

I'd float Nik out there and see what can be had. Worse case, no worth offer comes in and you sit pat.

Remember that JD has already traded Nikitin once. I think that once Wiz is back, Nikitin could be expendable. Whether it's at the deadline or over the summer, a couple of defensemen are probably going to have to go to make room for Murray, Goloubef, Prout, Savard, Erixon, etc. The future is beyond bright on the blue line. I will say that Prout has not looked out of place up here, he'll make a quality bottom pairing defenseman.

That said, I think that if this club is going to add any type of offense, JK is going to have to use a defensive surplus to get it.

I agree on Nikitin, but disagree on Letestu. I think Test tube has been a big part of this teams chemistry, and when he scores they tend to be big goals. Not that there are a lot of unimportant goals scored, but you know what I mean.

I agree with both. Nikitin does seem to be the most expendable. Wiz's shot from the point is better, but at least Nikki has a point from the shot to enhance his value.

But Letestu seems to fit in well here. And he's been showing up lately in shootouts, too. I said in the GDT from last night, his goal at the end of that sublime shift was no gimme- a lot of times, that puck goes high or gets stopped by the goalie

Any interest in Tomas Fleischmann? The Panthers are rumored to be shopping him. He'll have two years left on his contract after this season at $4.5 per. I don't know anything about his work ethic.

I think Letestu needs to stay. I haven't always felt that way, but he and Vinny embody what it means to be a Columbus Blue Jacket. Holy crap... an identity!

Don't think that he's what were looking for. I would think that JK is looking at the clearance bin. Probably an expiring contract that can be had for either a lower level prospect or late round pick.

He makes entirely too much for what he brings imo. Unless we swap him straight up for Umberger, I say pass.

Goloubef has little value. We saw Keaton Ellerby and Ben Lovejoy go for 5th round picks this season. I'd place Goloubef in the same range. And Ruth has no trade value at this point.

I don't know much about Lovejoy, but I don't like the Golo = Ellerby equation. In the couple games I saw Ellerby play, it was clear why he only went for a 5th rounder. The guy is a bonehead.

Whereas Golo is solid and simple. It might be that half the teams in the league would be upgraded immediately if they stuck him on their third pair. That's something you pay for.

I remember reading an article on tsn.ca a few weeks ago that quoted a GM, Montreal maybe, that basically said that the trade deadline isn't what it used to be. Too many guys saying, "if I give up that guy who am I gonna replace him with?"

If you think it through logically, I think you get to the same place. If I'm the GM of a contending team, do you think I'm giving up one of my guys who is any good for an unknown (at least as far as how they will fit) guy? It is the problem we ran into last year. Nash wanted out; lots of teams wanted him, but none would break up their roster to get him till after the season. I don't expect any Jackets blockbusters at the deadline, unless they collapse between now and then and if Jarmo & JD decide that certain guys don't fit going forward.

barring a collapse, I think the draft, free agency and the rest of the off season are times when bigger trades will take place.

@CraigCustance: Jarmo Kekalainen on how he approached his first GM meetings: "Just listen a lot and kind of be a first-year student among the elders."

Interesting tweet, but makes sense since he's just getting his feet wet.

@CraigCustance: Jarmo Kekalainen says Blue Jackets successful run won't change how he approaches the deadline. Sticking with long-term view of building CBJ.

Ok, kind of stating what we already knew, right? So, with the long-term view in mind, I'm asking the board to make predictions. What kind of deal(s) can we expect of JK at the deadline with the future in mind?

- Young players under contract with more than a year left on their deal? If that's the case, what incentive does the trading team have to trade them? I don't necessarily see something like that.
- Trading existing roster pieces for draft picks? I could see this. If he has a few names circled that he doesn't believe fits with the future of the team then I could see him moving someone for draft picks. If this happens, I think it sends a bad message to the current team in the middle of a playoff push.
- Perhaps he finds a player that he likes that's under contract for a few years and works to acquire him...?
- What else? Thoughts?

Is all I've read (media based posts) is how JD and JK are not going to do anything at the deadline..., therefore I think they will do something... :sarcasm:

Seriously, it appears Kek is going sit back and take in the scenery for a while... That's ok I guess... If he would attempt a trade at the deadline I'd be surprised based on the stuff I've been reading, even if he does make a deadline move I doubt it would more than something minor.

The only thing that I would add to this is that he might make a move if it impacts the long term plan that he and JD have in place. Otherwise I doubt much happens.

Two very good points in one single sentence.

A guy like Purcell is the kind of guy we'd target. Young RW with some scoring ability on a team in desperate need of defense.

Point two: the salary cap is going down next season, but then again the following season. Perhaps the Blue Jackets "keep their powder dry" this season and build through the draft. Then NEXT season, go bargain hunting with teams needing to shed salary?

Steve Downie put up big numbers alongside Steven Stamkos... Pascal Dupuis and Chris Kunitz are putting up huge numbers (100 point pace for Kunitz) alongside Sidney Crosby.

I don't think Teddy Purcell is more than a 30-40 point player on most other teams. I wouldn't spend too much effort trying to nab him.

Islanders , Winnipeg Jets & Montreal Canadiens are scouting the Blue Jackets heavily --- the buzz is a few players could be had including Prospal / Dubinsky & R.J. Umberger. I could see the Habs adding another big body up front like Dubinsky or Umberger especially with a future possible playoff matchup vs the big Bruins looming. Jets need some more scoring on the PP so interest in Prospal does make sense or Umberger. Islanders could be looking at Dubinsky or Brassard and with players like Bailey / Okposo slowly wearing out their welcome on Long Island, seems a match could be made.

Talking about these parts..

Islanders have quietly shopped Frans Nielsen and Okposo.. Kyle has picked up his play lately and teams like the Blue Jackets / Blues / Ducks have shown interest.

If getting Okposo costs Brass, Dubi, or RJ (A better Okposo) then no thanks.

I had read somewhere 2-3 weeks ago that Jarmo was shopping Dubi very heavily almost as soon as he was hired. Was just a snip-it on a much longer article. Maybe it was a "about to double his salary" thing, but it was out there.

We're rebuilding. Okposo is six years younger than RJ and outscored him last year. Not sure I'd be too quick to dismiss an RJ for Okposo swap. He's got a good shot, strong on the puck, and a really hard nose for the net, not to mention he has room to improve and seems like a good fit for our system. I'd say his hands are better than RJ's as well. Plus his value is low right now, and he makes about 2mil less than RJ does.

I can see Okposo playing well on the Johansen-Foligno line in lieu of Umberger. I still haven't made my mind up about Dubinsky, but he has started to frustrate me, because he tries the same toe drag on every single rush when he has a look at the net. Just shoot the freaking puck.

I'm certainly not for trading Prospal. He's pretty much our only player on pace for a twenty-goal season (82 games), and I think he is a big part of the room as well. Wouldn't want to loose someone with that competitiveness.
